Need New Laptop Budget $1000

Hi, I am starting a new job and have to return my work laptop to my employer before I leave. Now i have to purchase my own laptop and would want one ideally in the next few days, just wondering i could borrow the knowledge of this forum in recommending me a good laptop in my $1000 budget.

I only need the laptop for web browsing, a little bit of excel and word, watch the odd youtube video here and there, emails, itunes.

Was looking at purchasing for $999
(https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-victus-15-6-fhd-gaming…)

Just wondering if this is the best laptop in its price range that i can purchase straight away, otherwise if you guys could kindly reccommend something better or more suitable to my needs.

Also is it a good idea to get a Dell Refurbished Laptop? How long does it take to ship to me and what retailers are reputable?

Yehhhh I wouldn't. 8gb RAM would drive me nuts. Stretch for something like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763879
If you really can't, then get a second hand Lenovo T480 or X1.

      Lenovo? Blech!

MacBook Air with M1 chip. Combine with 15% off Apple Gift Cards promo and pick it up for $1275.

It’s a little above budget but will be far superior in performance, portability, battery life and screen display than above for a fraction more. Plus you’ll make it back in either resale or lack of needing a new laptop in a few years anyway.

Also damn talk about long time lurker. 12 years no posts. Where you been fam?

The Intel NUC M15 is also a good contender, it's usually $1200 but when on sale closer to $1k

Currently on sale for $1056 on scorptec on eBay, with the eBay Plus coupon SNSPLUSM'

The Macbook 2020 is also a fine work laptop provided you know your way around MacOS. Windows 11 can run on it but it needs to be virtualized

For home use? Then you don't care about battery life, weight or build quality. Anything with a decent display will do.

But if you need to transport it daily, and those things matter, $1k is a problem and I'd recommend looking at "refurbished" laptops.
The one you linked is a "gaming laptop". Do you actually want a laptop with a graphics card for games? That changes the equation.

  • All the decent sub $1K deals have recently finished

The last HP listing has been changed to "New - Open Box" with 2+ years warranty until June 2025 so for $749 with eBay Plus, still a good deal

Use the spare $250 to buy a monitor as that is the best upgrade you can buy for any laptop
