Audio Technica ATH-M50s $116 AU Delivered from Amazon USAffiliate

Hi guys,

This looks like a pretty solid price for a good set of at's. Ships pretty cheap from the us over regular shipping ($11) but express is a bit more ($30)

Features:

  • Exceptional audio quality for professional monitoring and mixing
  • Collapsible design ideal for easy portability and convenient storage, accessory included- protective pouch
  • Adjustable padded headband for comfort during long mixing/recording sessions
Short review from the depths of the amazon:

These are the best sounding headphones I've had, even right out of the box, and the bass showed noticeable improvement after only a few hours of use.

They're light, comfortable, and have amazing clarity even with their bass response. No muddy bass at all, it sounds crisp and heavy even at lower volume. They're a noticeable improvement over the other sets I have, a Grado SR80i and Sennheiser HD280 Pro's; the construction seems better than the 280's, too, with solid mountings and rotation on the cups and a reinforced cable at the jack. The cable is long enough to reach across my living room to my receiver with extra slack to spare, and with this straight cable version I don't get the tangles I have with my 280's.

All around great headphones, and I'm really happy with them. Awesome music headphones, but the clarity makes them great with dialog in movies and the bass in games is powerful without being overbearing.

I wonder why they are on sale?

The straight cord version is always more expensive in Aus. I prefer the coiled cable version since the only complaint these headphones ever get is that the cable is insanely long.
But $50 saving is the best I have ever seen - Great deal

The coiled cord is annoying tbh, I'd rather something long I could loop up.

      •

        How is it annoying?

I was thinking to get a pair of these for work (office).. and the current pair of headphones I use also have a long straight cord that always falls on floor to get sucked under my chair or get caught up by armrests etc. I thought a coiled set might be the solution.

        • +1 vote

it's annoying if you don't like the coil tension, which kinds of pulls at your headset if you have it plugged too far away. not to mention after a while it becomes somewhat like a mess of spaghetti. at least for the cheap ones i used to own. :P

        •

I would just velcro it up then.

can these be used on public transaport without too much sound leaking?

im a decent citizen and dont want to share my music with people who dont appreciate it.

    • +21 votes

The idiot next to you will drown out any leakage with his blaring techno on his poor mobile speaker.

    • +1 vote

      Good man

    •

Yes they can, unless your tolerance to audio volume exceeds that of a normal human being, in which case it may leak a little.

    • +2 votes

We need more people like you. Thank you.

    •

      these seal sound really well
if you close the headphone so that each ear piece is sealed against the other one
its almost like a nightclub in your hands ( you can hear the bass but nothing else)
then if you peal the seal so it just breaks, its amazing
one of my favourite things to do with the headphones to show it to people who don't know the difference between these and the standard apple ones
      highly recommended ! ! !

One of the beat headphones i ever had…excellent clarity

That is rather embarrassing. I shitheaphonesed myself when I read this.

  •

Will anybody price match Amazon ?

    • -2 votes

offcieworks might, ive heard stories that they do, whether or no its true i dont know

  •

Compared to the Sennheiser HD 518, which one is better??

    • +2 votes

      These.

  • +1 vote

Deep bass tones, very prominent mids[ which most other headphones in this price range lack] & excellent highs..
Also, since they're closed ear, there's no external sound bleed & vey comfy to use over log periods of time..
    Best set i've invested in…

  •

Brilliant headphones! Problem with a bit of clamping over very extended periods of time but putting these headphones around a stack of books to stretch will fix that! Also, consider sticking some rolled up tissues under the ear cups to make them a deeper fit and it will sit alot better =) Considering buying another pair to 'refresh' my older set that I find so difficult to upgrade from…

  • +1 vote

Sooo tempting, my puppy got hold of my current pair, and they still sound OK, but quite literally looks like a dog's breakfast and part of me thinks I may be losing out on some sonic goodness…

    •

if you can't tell the difference, then you are probably not. Maybe get replacement pads and that should be enough

  •

How's this compare to hd25? Been waiting for a good price on hd25 but this is so tempting…

    • +2 votes

HD25-1 II much better in isolation, marginally better in sound and build, ATH's marginally better in comfort and usually cheaper HD25 is US$199

better to keep an eye out for the HD25-1 II's (lowest Ive seen is US$130) but dont confuse with the cheaper and inferior HD 25-SP II (gotta love marketing)

      •

Tnx for the info. Guess ill have to keep on waiting..

  •

now just have to figure out a way to buy these without the boss/misses knowing..
very hard since we share CC and bank accounts..

could some fellow OzBargainers share some handy/sneaky tips!?

    i really want these! =P

    • +7 votes

Have an honest marriage and don't be selfish.

    •

we have shared CC and bank accounts too.
But I handle all the transactions, pay all the bills, and buy expensive gifts for her using the same CC.
So she's become more and more flexible with me doing "small" purchases for myself.

    • +6 votes

Get a friend to buy it for you and pay them back in small inconspicuous cash installments or save the money back by eating baked beans and peanut butter sandwiches for lunch for a month at work. BAM!

Wife: "How did you get those headphones?"
      ssjmark: "umm…found them."

        • +5 votes

          You used the word beats

  •

Are these a worthy upgrade from AD700's? I find the AD700 is great for gaming but a bit light when listening to music. On a side note, my $100 RE-0 in-ear earphones died, so if I could use this ATH-M50s on public transport, then that would definitely be ideal.

    •

      AD700 has a flat FR curve, M50 has a V curve

    • +1 vote

Probably wont keep your ears as warm as the AD700s. Mine are so toasty right now.

  •

Whoa. Ranked #2 in the category › Headphones on HeadFi. That's #2 in all categories of headphones - in-ear, around ear, over ear. And a 5-star review on Amazon with 168 (138 of which are 5-star and 23 4-star) reviews. There are no other headphones at this price with such high reviews unless I'm mistaken.

  • +1 vote

    I'm getting $119.87

    • +1 vote

That is Amazon's currency conversion. The actual currency conversion (according to XE) is $116.10 at the moment. The latter is approximately what you'll pay with a card like 28 Degrees.

      •

Thanks for explaining that, thought the extra $3 off was from the affil link.

  •

If I use these on a mp3 player or my mobile phone, would I need a portable amp to go with it? or it will just sound amazing out of the box?

  •

I have the coiled wire version of this that I picked up from the Sound Professionals sale. I use them paired with a headphone tube-amp/DAC. Highly recommend these and cheaper than what I paid ($128.55) if you're not fussed about the cable.

Grab an Fiio E5 or E7 to go with it.

    Instant. Eargasm.

    •

Is there any reason not to go with the E6 instead?

      •

The E5 has one boost setting and the E6 has two. The boost bandwidth on the E5, I found, was very nicely matched to the M50.

The E6 has one boost (3db) that boosts the low frequencies and muddles the highs, and another (6db) that boosts the highs way more than the lows, which sounds odd with the M50's response curve.

Out of the two, the E6 is the better amp, but the boost on the E5 sounds better on the M50 than the E6. Keep in mind a lot of it will depend on what you tend to listen to and how you like your music to sound.

      •

Before getting fiio amp from amazon read this first so you are not getting fake stuff http://www.head-fi.org/t/616077/dont-buy-any-fiio-product-fr...

    •

Does the amp make much difference? There's a bit of info on headphone forums suggesting these headphones are fine without and an amp makes little difference. Not sure if I should purchase an amp or not.

  •

thanks, ordered one. planning to give to gf as gift, but if i really like them i might keep….

  • +1 vote

Couldn't resist and ordered one, my excuse to my wife would be that this is a gift for you and it would help you ease your pressure while you are pregnant and good for the baby….LOL

  •

Don't need one but good deal.

  •

So (im just asking) are these better than Logitech G35s?
I would like some nicer headphones.

  • +4 votes

Bought! I tried to 'buy together' with the Fiio E6, but they wouldn't let me deliver the E6 to Aus. BOO!

I went down to the Audio Technica store under Westfield Sydney to try out the demo model. Sticker price $219. Sounds great! I feel bad for the retail stores that don't get my business anymore…but not $100 worth of bad.

  •

I was tossing up between getting an amp for my DT880's or getting a pair of these..
2 reasons I went for these.. 1) price (thanks op!) 2) dt880's are too open for public transport(they say semi open for some reason!)

  •

    Order Total: AUD 119.87

Great price $45 cheaper than local dealers.

  •

I bought a pair of these almost 2 years ago, very good sound quality and solid built headphones, unfortunately I paid a bit more at the time but still got them from the states because they were ridiculously expensive to buy locally.

  •

Guys, if you're looking at getting these, I'd say buy it now. I have it and it's great!
With all the rave reviews this has been getting, Audio Technica actually put their prices up, so get it cheap while you can!

  • +1 vote

BOUGHT! thanks heaps for the heads up, was after a decent & good bass & closed ear phone for a while now.

  •

Great sounding headphones…bought for about $169 locally and I thought that was a bargain.

    Not the most comfortable though!

  •

Does anyone know where is cheapest to get the coiled-cord version of these headphones? I've been looking at getting a pair for a while. I'm not really a fan of having the long cord dangling everywhere.

  •

Just dropped another $2. It's currently at the lowest price its ever been, so if you're trying to hold out for a lower price I wouldn't wait much longer as it could go back to the usual $150.

  • +2 votes

Removable Cable Mod! For any daredevils out there. I do want to try it but am a little worried haha.
Damn I tried to add the Fiio E5 as recommended by funkymonkey (because the E7 is too expensive) but it can't be shipped to Aus! Oh well..

    •

the E5 is replaced by the E6. See if that can ship over.

  • +1 vote

    FML OzBargain! impulse bought =(

    • +2 votes

Don't worry, this impulse buy will be worth it lol

  •

Anyone know how long this deal is for?

  •

    Bought one…thx

  •

    Looks good..

But I'm actually after a wireless version of headphones, to enjoy good movies without disturbing everyone else in the house.

    Any recommendations?

  •

How do you know if these are genuine or fake

  • +2 votes

Just for reference for others.. I bought this on Aug 10th using a 28 degrees card. It was priced at USD $109.06 + $11 shipping.
I was charged $114.33 in total. Pretty damn good rate!
