Best Chair Mat for Carpets

I’ve already gone through two different ones from office works in the past year, they cracked up after like six months.

I’ve tried looking around but obviously whatever I buy, it’s actual quality won’t be recognised until many months of use. So I need some suggestions on what the best one is from youses experience.

Which ones from OW? When I worked there The cheap ones were terrible; constantly came back with cracks. The more expensive ones were much better but they’d still come back (but much less frequent)

Also how thick is your carpet? The thicker the carpet the thicker the chairman you’ll need

  • I have this https://www.bunnings.com.au/standard-carpets-1000-x-1000mm-c… Won’t win any style awards but hasn’t cracked after around 6 months (on carpet). It’s obviously not specifically designed for a chair mat but does the job great. Any other marine type carpet will be similar

However I’ve been told that - strange as it may first seem - a tempered sheet of glass is actually an extremely good option eg https://www.bunnings.com.au/architects-choice-1200-x-1200-x-…

    • i might try the glass idea, my current chair mat is is cracked

      • Just be careful of static electricity :)

    • Damn.. i just picked up the bunnings chair mat on the weekend (same one I had before - cracked after about 6-9 months). Had I known about the glass, i would've given that a try!

  • Have an ikea one for over a year, no issue but it slides cause no grooves for carpet.

Bought a cheap one from Amazon, came rolled in a box, took forever to unroll it, and time (3 months) did the rest of unrolling with use. Had for over a year with no cracks but it is softer than the officeworks one, hence probs why no cracks

    • Same I've had Officeworks ones in the past which have cracked. Ikea one still going strong few years on.

  • What if you swapped the wheels for something like this https://www.amazon.com.au/Glides-Replacement-Stationary-Cast…

    • i swapped my wheels to this, and not sure how i feel about it. I don't dislike it, but i don't like it

  • I’ve got an anchormat on soft carpet, goes just over 2 years now with no crack
    Not overly cheap though

  • Plywood works well, paint or cut if desired

    .

    • Just make sure you lift it up every so often so any moisture can dry up (and not turn to mould)

      • maybe pegboard would be better then
I'm using a crappy cracked IKEA one, but plywood next.
I used plywood to level out where my wife WFH, on the carpet to match the adjacent tiling height
        .

  • I use a thick rug + a rubber mat from Ikea. The rug is like 1.5m by 80cm
