      This is certainly more powerful than the RG35XX and good if you prefer the horizontal form factor. The RG35XX has a better display so many games that aren't Gameboy will look better.

              @Arsenal: Practically none of the DS and 3DS Games actually use both screens at once. So it's viable to run them via emulation. Something that has a widescreen (16:9) can stack them side-by-side. Or you can maximise the main screen, and switch between the screens as necessary.

              The DS Lite is a great system. It's super cheap, very comfortable in the pocket, has really long battery life, and can be hacked to play all systems upto it fine. But no emulation of systems like Sega 32X-CD, Saturn, PS1, or N64. So this ranks lower than these handheld devices.

              The new3DS is also a great system. Same as above, but slightly bulkier, pricier, with less battery life. It can do the systems named above, including the NDS. But it can't do other systems like the Dreamcast, PSP, or PS2. So this ranks similar to these handheld devices.

              There's also the PSP (v3000) which ranks a bit lower than the new3DS and these handheld devices.

              Whilst the PS Vita Slim ranks higher than these, and on-par with the new-gen handheld devices (Anbernic RG 405m, Retroid Pocket 3+).

                @Kangal: I love my DS and 3DS collection but they're not the best way to emulate retro collections, even though I have them setup to do so.

                I always prefer running them on any one of the dedicated handhelds like this one I've bought over the last few years. The screens are bigger, higher resolution and linux-based ones run EmulationStation for excellent organisation of your huge collection with box-art and video previews, along with descriptions of the game and star ratings from the community.

                You can achieve a similar setup on Android-based handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 3+ or Flip and Odin Lite/Pro by installing Daijisho launcher.

                For N64, PSX, Dreamcast and PSP, you can run your full collection at 3x or higher resolution, add widescreen hacks to play N64, PSX and Dreamcast in 16:9 which works great for many games.

                So while you technically can play up to SNES/PSX era on a 3DS, it's just not the best way to play by a long mile. You don't get save states, options to tweak graphics settings, proper filters and overlays if you want to for example make GB games look like they're running on a specific GB model like the GB Pocket, and the screen just isn't anywhere near as nice as any of these.

                For actual DS and 3DS content though, no other handheld is comparable to playing on the OG hardware. Even DS on a 3DS is not great, because the screen resolution is different and the it doesn't integer scale correctly so it ends up blurrier than playing on the original DS. You can hold start when launching a DS game on a 3DS to shrink it to the correct scale, but it's too small to enjoy IMO.

          I haven't looked into it much, but from my understanding the DS port in general is clunky? I know there is a 60fps patch for Super Mario 64 on these handhelds. Most DS games seem to run fine on this.

          Not as many as you think. Back when those Android TV boxes were a thing I was using them as emulation boxes. In recent times I've been using a Powkiddy V90 with Miyoo custom firmware and a Powkiddy X18S that I picked up for a ridiculously low price.

          I have the RG35XX ordered from GeekBuying on the way.

      Assuming you have a computer, for the last 20 years I've found that to be the easiest part of emulation..
      Now just searching "SNES Roms", "GBA Roms", "N64 Roms" and there's dozens of sources. Let alone if you have ever used a torrent before. Curate a library with a top 50 from IGN.

      Out of curiosity how old are you? Even as a kid in the 90's I was downloading ROMS off the internet. I never had a Gameboy so that's how I played Pokemon Red & Yellow. It's one of the best parts of the internet IMO.

      This one is a 3:2 ratio display which mimics the GBA perfectly with no black bars. The others are in 4:3 which works best for SNES.

        Not only a 3:2 ratio matching the GBA, but 480x320 is exactly 4x the resolution of the GBA, so you should end up with pixel-perfect scaling and no interpolating.

        ie. each pixel on the GBA is a 4 pixel box on this, so it's clean.

    Eh, it's ok. The market moved on, these things are pretty poor compared to even entry level devices nowadays. PowkiddyRK2023 and RP353PS made this kinda redundant, and Miyoo mini 2 plus is just on the horizon.

      I'm Steam Deck all the way for me personally, but if I had to recommend anything to someone, it's hard to go past the Retroid Pocket Flip. When you've got an incredibly comfortable and pocketable machine, and it can do PSP/DC flawless, you're doing good…but then throw in decent 3DS, GameCube and PS2 support, hell, it can even do a small stack of more basic Switch games. Not to mention the thing is an Android machine, so you've got better (still not the best mind you) versions of the GTA trilogy right there, as well as Max Payne, Bully, and so on, and the bevy of other Android games like COD Mobile and the sort…plus the cloud gaming stuff I didn't even think of, xCloud works great on it, etc.

      Point being: Retroid Pocket Flip, or the Pocket 3+ if you don't want the clamshell, offers some hella serious bang for your buck. MUCH better purchase than one of these. RK2020 was doing this level of stuff 3 or 4 years ago and while I got mine for free at the time, it was only going for about 80 AUD if you looked in the right places.

        I wouldn't put the t618 devices for GameCube. 3ds and ps2. There's alot of fiddling about, needing to use pal roms, going to retro handheld discord to get the community presets for overclocking, etc. Personally, I'll suggest Odin if you're really interested for 7th Gen.

        But yeah, I agree with you, retroid devices are the to go to suggestions nowadays. Rk2023 goes for similar price and are far better in general. The 351p is unfortunately 2 years redundant.

              @stenchlord: Given the price ranges and age of the devices I assumed those cheaper ones wouldn't be in great shape. In any case it looks like i'd be up for maybe $50 for a copy of the game as well.

              I don't really have any interest in a DS myself, and I doubt my son would do either other than to play that specific Mario game, so i'm not really looking to spend >$50 just for him to play that one game. At least with one of these emulator handhelds there are hundreds of games from different platforms available to pique interest after Mario.

                @Arsenal: You can mod a ds or 3ds, and that lets you emulate or pirate on the device. So that'll let you pay just for the device.

                The problem with ds is that alot of core games had the touch screen gimmick, so it's not a really good platform to emulate, even on phones. If you want to play more Gameboy or play station stuff though, the mini miyoo is the usual suggestion for entry level, the the powkiddy v90 as the bare minimum you should go. Just don't expect ds on either of these devices.

      I had a retroid pocket 2 but got rid of it and got a steam deck.
      These devices are cheap.. and also a bit nasty, annoying to update the firmware too.

        You're comparing apples and oranges. These are cheap by design. Nasty? They play retro games nicely if you ask me, and I think the build quality is surprisingly good.

        But yeah, compared to a device that is at least 7 times it's cost, I guess it is.

            There's a huge difference with a pocketable handheld and a big ass steam deck or a phone accessory that takes fiddling to use. It's the difference between actually playing or not playing.

            The industry moved on since the rp2. There are some great devices out there that have great build quality and dedicated features for cheap. Even if you buy a phone, put a game dedicated launcher/frontend, and never take the controllers off, it's not going to be feature parity with Miyoo mini, RP3+ or odin. You can take the sbc and make your own Linux handheld and still won't be feature parity. Steam deck is, but it's huge as (profanity), and quick resume won't work in emulation, while it does on miyoo mini and anbernic linux devices.

    According to the website below, this SOC RK3266 is 4 times less powerful than a SD845. Seriously doubt it would be able to handle any demanding games. Maybe GBA games max, but only handful of simple PSX games.

      So you think a 64bit 4 core, 4 threads CPU at 1.5GHz is not capable of playing anything up to the PS1 when the PS1 uses a 32bit single core CPU at 33.86MHz?

      We're not talking Android gaming here. We're talking emulation and the CPU in this is more than capable.

      Unless you can recommend another handheld for about $110 with an SD845?

      Honestly, unless GBA is the system you really want to play, the 35xx is probably fine. This'll play some DC, PSP and N64, but the experience is compromised by the screen and the chip. Anything else that this can do, the 35xx will do too.

    Considering Ambernic are constantly releasing new models, I'd wait on a cheap RG353M instead. The 351 is just a little bit too slow with PSX emulation, plus 353 introduces hall sticks (no drift) and a higher res 640x480 screen.

    If you're new to emulator handhelds/Retroarch, a big sell of the RG35XX over this is the availability of the GarlicOS firmware, which is remarkably clean, minimalist, and easy to set up. ArkOS and 351ELEC for this are still great but it's a fair bit more complicated at first.

      Not sure about external wired controllers but I think you'd be looking at Pocket 3+. 5ghz Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C and HDMI out. Screen and chip far exceeds this one. It's one of the best at the moment.

      Probably not GTA, this is not powerful enough. Even the Pocket 3+ which is a lot more powerful and can run a few PS2 games cannot handle GTA very well. The Pocket 3+ is probably one of the leading handhelds at the moment, this handheld is quite weak. You'd be better off spending a bit more and getting the Pocket 3+. The screen and chip in this Anbernic one is not great.

    Emulation handhelds are coming in hot.. The old games are not going anywhere. In a few years, you're going to see these cheaper and much more powerful. I'll buy one when they've reached their peak and then it will be one handheld to rule all retro games. Still to early to adopt, the tech is evolving so quick right now.

      There's definitely a fatigue in seeing a new model announced from Anbernic, Retroid, etc. every other week. Although if you're after something console specific there are great deals to be had.

      This model is great for GBA, despite being two years old. With some tweaking this model can support cloud saving and retroachievements. The lack of wifi is definitely an annoyance with this model.
