Larger Size Kitchen Bins

Hi All.

I have 2 bins in the kitchen for glass and plastic recyclables and they fill up quick because we don't crush the containers so the kids can do cashbacks.

The current bins are about 27 x 37cm wide at the top and 54cm high with a bit of a taper - that's 50L, very standard - but are housed in pull-out drawers 29 x 47 x 65cm, so almost 90L. I'm wanting bins to fill up those drawers better but struggling to find much above the 50L mark that's rectangular like a standard kitchen bin.

Anyone know a source for bigger rectangular bins? (Don't even need to be bins, could be plastic boxes - we don't use the lids anyway).

100L box in a 90L drawer? A bit like you - too big for it's environment.

    • Yep, that's what we are using as a recycling bin…only for now though I'm thinking as the kitchen is in a bit of a shambles after recent renovations. So easy though just to dump the recycling into the big box

  • Is that drawer dimension w x d x h?

    • Yes.

  • Why not just get 100L bags and put them in the drawers? Easy to haul off wherever it needs to go then.

    • Drawers are similar construction to the bottom ones in this. Nothing to wrap the top of the bag over. In any event, a bin is preferable since if a bag leaks it helps contain the mess.

      • ah, gotcha. https://www.theplasticman.com.au/collections/storage-boxes-c… - this without the lid might work if you trim the edges off?

Realistically you'll probably max out at about 60L, reason being that containers are all tapered to improve shipping (they can be stacked inside each other, perfectly straight containers can't). Also makes it easier to get stuff out of, easier to get it off plastic molds and they're stronger because weight inside them distributes better.

My next suggestion was going to be just build a wooden box to fit, but probably the same issue on leaking. Or get two of these side by side - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/pps-moving…

Yeah that box you linked is wide and short, the bin needs to be high - like that box on its side.

I have thought of making my own but it just feels wrong. I do use a large cardboard box for recycled paper - I leave that in the laundry and don't care if it gets trashed by spills from old cartons etc. as I replace it every now and then - but really wanted to use this space in the kitchen.

If you get some old plastic tubs off hard rubbish, cut them to the shape you want then melt the edges or hot glue together (you’ll wanna do bit but while outside) and reinforce with a water resistant caulk.

$600 a pop? I bow to your commitment to stylish refuse collection.

Srsly though, they're nice, but defeats the purpose of having hidden bins, and each compartment is smaller than what I have now.

    • Phuck that price

    • For that price it would want to take itself to the kerb each bin day.

For an extra 10L, there is this: Eco Bin 60 L Recycled Waste Bin

    • Wow, that's actually an awesome form, I love it - just a bit short too in one dimension (I've got 470mm, this is 247mm, just a smidge too long to squeeze in 2) to give it a go.

  • Lol I've been using the bigger Amazon boxes that I line with paper/catalogues and dump if it get soggy. Recently I upgraded to my kids old baby bath that was just taking room and I can just hose it off or wipe with a disinfectant wipe if it gets mucky. Haven't bought bin bags since they stopped giving it out for free at Colesworth

  • Buy a big bin for outdoors and empty the inside bins more often? (if you are living in an apartment then probably not an option).
