  • Thanks op!

  • Thanks, bought one!

Remember these are not designed for offshore fishing.

These are designed for water sports close to shore

    • The PFD50 ones can be used offshore on a PWC though, at least in QLD.

Mainly colour, it defines the types of water the jacket is legal to use in.

      • Thanks Pobman

      • "it defines the types of water the jacket is legal to use in"

I believe this to be incorrect the lifejacket specification system is for that but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Both those lifejackets you have linked above Ryan2008
Are the same specification. I believe the S stands for special-purpose or sports
Basically they come in more colour ways because people like different choices they are for water sports basically.

The other one is just a low-key colour way I guess if you don't want to stand out and you just want something for your kayak etc that's a good choice

A 50 and 50s will both be conforming to ISO12402.5 level 50 … the principle difference will be the colours.

In QLD the red 50 can be used in smooth waters, and partially smooth. Plus on a PWC rather than a boat it can be used beyond those waters. While the 50s would be for smooth waters only. So given the flotation levels are the same standard its the colour which is defining what sort of waters they can be used in.

Pobman is correct. The 'S' pfd's have more black then the regular model, so are only permitted in smooth waters.

The brightly coloured ones are okay to use within smooth and partially smooth waters.

Waiting for someone to say they’ve bought it and now need to buy a kayak or something to use with it!

I bought 1, a kayak and a car roof rack as well. Now I just need to buy a SUV.

      • SUV you won’t be able to get it in the garage (forum reference) - get a wagon instead ;)

        • +2

They might as well buy a Rav4, then try and take it back to the dealer for a refund when their roof racks don't fit.

I bought the inflatable 2p kayak and now need this. The kayak was great on the lake.

  • Are these any good for occasional kayak use?

Paid $50 and was happy. They are comfy to paddle in, size runs a little smaller than specified

    • Definitely. The arm holes are a little bigger than some other PFD's, so it makes it easier for paddling.
It's still not a paddling-specific jacket, so if that was your main activity, I would probably get something else.

But we use these for all sorts of things - sailing, waterskiing/towing, paddling. It's a decent all-rounder and especially at this price.

      • That's a paddlin!

No stock anywhere that’s not in bumfarksville

I can still see quite a few size/colour combos around Sydney (Auburn, Castle Hill, Minchinbury, Penrith etc etc).
Bu you're right, none that are anywhere near Bumfarksville - you might want to consider relocating from there if you want to access future sales like these.

    • They've been on sale for $25 for a couple of weeks, and were in your face when entering my local store. I grabbed a bunch at the start of the month. I doubt that the popular sizes will be easy to find.

    • Is that anywhere near Dog Swamp, WA?

Or maybe next door to Innaloo?

Full disclosure: I used to live in Innaloo

  • got 3 .. now can take the kids tubing and feel a little safer ;P

    • Did you get any for the kids? I count you, the wife and the dog so far ;)

Actually it was one for him and 2 as cushions to lift him higher off the captain's chair ;-)

  • Lots of Small, Large and XL at Keysborough. The Ripple Neoprene has a nice feel to it. I’ve ordered a Medium for collection. Some still available at Bayswater apparently.

  • I'm having trouble checking out via debit card. Anyone had issues? "Your order could not be submitted. Please try an alternate payment method."

    Just adding for clarification…

Note that these are rated PFD-50 / PFD-50S not PFD-100, so usually can't be used on fishing boats in open sea or enclosed waters (depending on state laws).

The difference is the PFD-100 rated buoyancy vests turn a child upright in the water and last longer before submersing.

You can be boarded and checked for these things and they are strict on this.

So check your state before purchasing.

Odd that BCF labels it a PFD and not a lifejacket.

    • +2

A PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is the correct terminology for this product, as it's not a lifejacket.

Thought the same until I had to do my Lead Flat Water Sea Kayak recently. Apparently it used to be lifejackets, then PFD and now it's gone back to lifejackets. Stuff we use at work still has PFD written on it but under the new terminology they are lifejackets. I would've thought a big company like BCF would be across it.
