Building a Hackintosh in 2023 from a HP Elitedesk 800 G4

I'm thinking about building a hackintosh from a HP Elitedesk 800 G4

current components:

i5-8500 3ghz
20gb ram
Fenvi T919 - network/bluetooth card
Samsung EVO970 SSD M2 - 1TB
Nvidia GT 1030 GPU

does anyone know if there is a work around for the 1030 GPU for Ventura or will I need to suck it up and get a AMD GPU?

Comments

  • I'm not aware of any workarounds for your Nvidia 1030 GPU with Ventura.

I had a really good experience with an AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB.
If you want more power the highest you can currently run is the 6950XT 16GB (which I just upgraded to).

Thanks for the info. I’ll need to keep an eye out for a good rx580 deal or hope to score a used one on the cheap.

I used to be right into hackintoshes, after they gimped the mac mini back in 2014 or so. But these days, why bother? M1 mini will be way faster, nice tiny footprint, decent GPU and will actually be supported once Apple give up and drop the Intel macs.

    • They already have dropped intel. The mac mini is not upgradable, you can still build a budget pc that is as good as a M1 Mac mini and hope there is ongoing support as OSX upgrades.

      • I meant dropping intel macs in terms of macOS upgrades.

macOS 14 is dropping everything prior to 2018 and there's only one machine supported that doesn't have a T2 chip. At worst, you won't get macOS 15 because it'll require a T2 chip to boot it. At best you'll maybe get to macOS 16/17 if they decide to support the Mac Pro for a couple of more years and don't make the T2 chip a requirement (or something else that's in the Mac Pro).

Plus the budget machine you're building is nowhere near as fast as an M1 mac mini, except maybe a small handful of tasks.

        • My budget machine can only run big sur from 2020. I don’t use it to do anything intense anyway, I just liked the os more than windows. Also figured I could get a few more years out of it if I could get Ventura on it.

Might be ok for you to spend heaps on the real thing but the whole point of a hackintosh was to get a mac for peanuts using older or existing equipment.

The OzB wealthy on the average 200k a year tend to forget that pensioners like me and others don't have enough money to waste on macs like some do we struggle with outrageous rents and high fuel costs

    • I sold an M1 Mac mini for $450 just recently, probably a better deal than messing with a Hackintosh. That's not much more than a HP Elitedesk 800 G4, and will be a much better experience.

Not just pensioners, us median salary earners also survive on bargains

    RTFM from the hacking sites.

  • Hackintosh

    Are you a cheap hacker?

  • What's the cost roughly for this setup? Curious, is all.

    • How much do you value your time? There is the cost of reading the hacking docs and then if you have the skills to follow them then there is this time and then there is the time if the docs are wrong or out of date or Apple close the hole used to get the Hackintosh to work and then there is the time to figure out what works and does not work with the install….. All up only for the very cheapskates or the hard core hacker from what I have read.

      • I’m just curious about the cost. Been a Mac user since 2004 and have no interest in building this.

        • Using google search engine is free and then it's time and effort on you to read and try and read and try again and read and try again….

How much do you think a 2 to 4 days of your time is worth?

          • @AndyC1: LOL are you alright mate? I asked a simple question about how much that setup costs. That's it. If you don't have answer, that's okay. You're not even the person I was asking, not sure why you keep responding angrily.

I wanted to know how much a hackintosh costs compared to a Mac of similar specs. Sure it's extra effort to build it but it's an exercise some people enjoy. More power to them.

            • @soan papdi: In that case:
              1) a similar speed PC will be cheaper than the old X86 based MAc's.
              2) it will cost you allot more to get a similar speed PC compared to the new MAC Ultra 2's.

Got the HP for free with an i5 and 20gb ram.
$50 for the nvidia 1030 - used close to brand new
$57 for the network/Bluetooth card from Ali express
      $79 for 1TB Samsung evo970

  • There’s a YouTube video that does a comparison with the new mac mini M2 and a hackintosh that is like for like in terms of specs. If you’re buying the base model it makes more sense to buy the Mac mini, where the cost difference kicks in is when you upgrade the ram and and ssd, it becomes a huge difference in price. Besides comparing the latest and greatest, a budget gaming pc that also has runs osx is worth it imo.
