Small small small chance of new Nintendo hardware due Q1 2024 if rumours are to be believed. If you have waited this long to get one… maybe might as well worth waiting a bit more.

Definitely go for it if you want one now, just heads up for others that are on the fence.

    • +2

Even when the Switch2 comes out it'll be years before it has any exclusives worth playing so I think you're safe at this price

      • +2

Current games with higher resolution and higher fps. Not Nintendo's style, but it would be awesome if it did.

        • +2

Lmao maybe by the time of the Switch 7 we'll be playing Botw at 60 fps natively

      • It will probably launch with a new 3D Mario and Metroid Prime 4

      • Seems like noises are all switch games will be transferrable to switch 2

    • +12

      "small small small chance"

      "rumours"

Might as well keep waiting for the Switch 3 then.

      Already waited 6 years.

    • +6

I have a modded OG Switch and I bought an OLED one just because the display is better. I probably should have waited for Switch 2, but meh. Having more stuff in my life now makes me happy.

      • +13

2 Switch better than Switch 2

    • +1

Agreed. My guess is Nintendo will wait until after Christmas before announcing, to get another holiday period of selling cheap ancient hardware at large profits to unsuspecting parents.

      • -8

"Unsuspecting parents" = anyone who wants to play the only modern console that exists with actual games to play.

"Cheap ancient hardware" = the only modern console that exists with actual games to play.

You post on every single Nintendo deal saying how bad the Switch is. Why?

Are you trying to promote these PC's dressed as consoles (XBOX, PSX)?

        • +1

          Found the Nintendo fanboy

        • -1

So what’s Switch according to your logic? With that ARM SoC, an android phone dressed as console? Or with the A53 cores may even as well considered as a Raspberry Pi dressed as a handheld.

And no, Switch is not modern at all, Terga X1 was released in 2015 with 20nm process which is definitely ancient.

          • -4

@neurofunky: The Switch is the system that plays all the latest games published by Nintendo.

If you want to get into spec-listing, go ahead. I've personally never played a game and marvelled at how much fun the graphics chip model was. The game design, sound, art in the game… that's what's always mattered.

Companies like Sony and Microsoft focus on this endless tech spiral because they don't actually have any games to promote (and no, signing exclusivity deals with Rockstar doesn't cut it).

            It's a game system, not a system-system.

And yes, the Switch is modern. It uses wireless motion-control joycons that attach and detach to a console that works as a handheld and a tv-console. It's the most modern concept of a console that's been released, and in that regard it's the only console in the latest generation.

The XBOX and PSX are PCs with DRM and console controls at this point.

            • +1

@CONUT: I love my switch, but you are making a really weird argument here. Sony has just as many beloved games on it as Nintendo now days.

              • -1

@ONEMariachi: Just as many? Outside of Rockstar games… what are they?

                • +2

@CONUT: You've never heard of any of the famous Sony exclusives? Are you taking the piss or are you genuinely not aware of them?

If you've never heard of them by some weird miracle of ignorance, here is a list of some very great games to go play.

                  • The Last of Us 1 & 2
                  • Ratchet and Clank
                  • Ghosts of Tsushima
                  • Horizon Zero Dawn
                  • Horizon Forbidden West
                  • Uncharted series (4 games)
                  • Spiderman
                  • Final Fantasy 16
                  • Final Fantasy 7 remake
                  • God of War
                  • God of war ragnarok
                  • Shadow of Colossus
                  • Bloodborne
                  • Death Stranding
                  • Demon Souls
                  • Dark Souls series
                  • Infamous series
                  • Persona series
                  • a million other great JRPG's
                  • Returnal

These are off the top of my head but I without a doubt missed a lot.

                  • -2

@ONEMariachi: More than half those games aren't PS5 exclusives. The Last of Us is a PS3 game.

                    • @CONUT: You mentioned rockstar? Whom haven’t published a sony exclusive in over a decade.
You’re also gonna compare a console that has been out for 6 years vs 2? 90% of my listed games came out since the switch released.
By all means though, make your list of switch games worth playing in the last 2 years. Will it be any larger than the PS5 list. Nope.

What are you doing? Why are you like this? Just enjoy games and stop being a potato.

                      • -1

@ONEMariachi: What are you talking about? I was replying to Paintoad about his spec-rants. You said PSX has loads of games. Which it doesn't, it's got a few and people couldn't even get their hands on a PS5 for years because of chip shortages.

                        • +1

@CONUT: You - the only modern console that exists with actual games to play.

Me - I love my switch, but you are making a really weird argument here. Sony has just as many beloved games on it as Nintendo now days.

You - Just as many? Outside of Rockstar games… what are they?

Me - Lists a tonne of amazing games, most of which have come out since the Switch came out.

You > pretending that the vast majority of Switch games that have come out on the switch were not remakes of gamecube/wii/wii u games or a slight reskin of one of those games.

Again. List which games you think, in the last two years came out on switch that are worth more than the ones that came out on PS5. because otherwise you are comparing a 6 year old console with a 2 year old one, which is purely moronic. You either get the last 2 years of comparison, or you get the last 6 years of comparison of both ps4/Ps5. You can't mix and match to make yourself feel smart.

                          • -2

@ONEMariachi: Make myself feel smart? Why would listing games from the last 2 years make me or you feel dumb or smart?

                            I don't own a PS4/5 or a Switch.

You say you love your switch but you think all the games are remakes and slight reskins of gamecube and wii and wii U games? The ability to do a HD remaster of Metroid Prime and it being one of the best games released in 2023 isn't a negative for Nintendo.

You listed the Uncharted Series. Those are PS3 games.

My point is that the PS5 and the PS4 is the same thing. A PS2 controller on a DRM PC. If you think it's not that, then say it. Sony aren't developing ANY of the games, they're simply bundling the hardware and controlling the marketing.

The experience you get from playing using a Logitech controller on a STEAM account on a PC is the same or better, but mostly the same, as the experience of owning an XBOX or PSX. That's my point. The games you can play on the Switch are Nintendo games that have Nintendo characters that don't exist anywhere else.

We're not actually arguing here, you're just confused. You think you're making points, but you're just missing the point.

My point, this whole time, has been that specs don't matter, only the gaming experience matters. Specs are relative to other systems.

I don't have to list catalogues of games, they're available online by searching for them, and you're more than welcome to do that yourself.

Here's the specs for the Switch: Animal Crossing, Advance Wars, Mario vs Rabbids, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, Dr. Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong Country, Wario games, Metroid, Pokémon, Splatoon, Star Fox, Super Smash Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles.

                            Pretty good specs hey?

Also, you don't have to use terms like, "purely moronic" or "high level autism;" because if you're insulting someone online who that stuff actually applies to, then you're hurting someone who's weaker than you and vulnerable to online abuse. And if they don't apply, then you're just wrong.

Neither are great options for casually discussing video games on a bargain website.

@CONUT: My god, you really do only read what you want and ignore the rest don't you?

I'm done talking to someone this unwilling to have a conversation in good faith. you should eb ashamed of yourself.

                  • @ONEMariachi: It's not worth it, check out this guy's @CONUT comment history and you'll see he just spams the same nonsense under every Switch post. We all know Nintendo is the king when it comes to shamelessly republish/resale old titles.

I hope Nintendo pays him for all he've done for them lol.

                    • +1

@neurofunky: I’m starting to think high level autism here. He’s stuck on repeat.

                    • -1

@neurofunky: They're all replies to one person spamming the opposite. Actually read the history instead of making stuff up, like you are about game specs.

            • @CONUT: Well, you are the one who brought up the point with "Are you trying to promote these PC's dressed as consoles (XBOX, PSX)?" and now you're saying it doesn't matter, ok.

It uses wireless motion-control joycons that attach and detach

So Bluetooth is new to you?

that works as a handheld and a tv-console

Literally every mobile phone can do that. And Switch with its ancient hardware sucks at both while most mobile phone can output 4K over DP and have better graphic processor.

You are not making any sense with these arguments. Stop being a fanboy and do research before making claims.

Nintendo does have great games but so does Sony. And that by no mean make the ancient hardware any better, only keeping it barely stays alive. I can only imagine how much better the game TOTK can be if I don't have to run it at dynamically scaled 1080p/25fps on a 4K TV and have to watch those blurry texts and textures. The hardware is already a joke when people need to emulate their games to get better performance.

              • -2

@neurofunky: I was asking PainToad if they were promoting the PSX and XBOX. What do you mean when you say I'm saying it doesn't matter. I'm specifically saying the games are all that matters, the specs are a distraction. Are you saying the specs matter and the games aren't as important?

What do you mean "is bluetooth new to you?" I said it has wireless motion-controls integrated into the system. Something that both XBOX and PSX attempted to clone when the Wii was launched, failed, and stopped doing.

No mobile phones play games at the Switch level on the television. "Switch sucks at both" ? What does this mean?

What do you mean "do research." For what? I'm saying the stats don't matter. Mobile phone gaming is trash. If you've got mobile games you're streaming to your television that are on par with Switch games I'd love to hear about them.

Where are Sony's flagship games from the past two generations? Rockstar games… that's it. Everything else is a HD remake of a PS3 game.

I played BOTW on my Wii U. It was perfect. Specs are irrelevant. Stop quoting marketing lines about hardware.

Also, saying anything that isn't 4k is blurry is just lying.

                • @CONUT:

I said it has wireless motion-controls integrated into the system
Well, I guess everybody can agree the switch Joycon is not known for its ergonomic comfort nor its quality.

No mobile phones play games at the Switch level on the television. "Switch sucks at both" ? What does this mean?

You ever heard of God of War? Gran Turismo? Ratchet & Clank?

I played BOTW on my Wii U. It was perfect. Specs are irrelevant. Stop quoting marketing lines about hardware.

Also, saying anything that isn't 4k is blurry is just lying.

Ye ye, game design is all that matters, I hear this bullshit all the time.
What you don't understand is that playback experience is an essential part of every bit of game design. Everyone can clearly see how the Switch hardware is limiting the game design of TOTK. If you say "Specs are irrelevant" then you might as well design the game for Game Boy, cause why not, it would have definitely plays the same cause "Specs are irrelevant" aren't they?

Also, saying anything that isn't 4k is blurry is just lying.

Get it onto a 4K TV and you will know what blurry means, it's simply a fact. Not saying 1080p is totally unplayable but it is by no mean modern.

                  • -2

@neurofunky: Okay, so you ARE promoting DRM PCs dressed up as consoles. Thanks for clarifying.

Switch is modern. It's the most modern interface. Mobile gaming is trash, and the PSX and XBOX are not mobile.

Yes, the amazing God of War, generic racing simulator and Ratchet and Clank… quick, grab my wallet, I need to buy a thousand dollar PS5.

The Game Boy? what are you talking about? The gaming experience is all that matters. Not the specs. bringing up the gameboy just tells me you don't have an argument.

Also, it just sounds to me like you've got a trash TV if it makes anything that isn't 4K blurry. Maybe contact the tv manufacturer about your tv fault?

            @cobknob: dragon quest monster December 1, 2023

          • @cobknob: If Switch 2 is going to be backwards compatible then it doesn’t matter that cool Switch games are coming out.

            • @AustriaBargain: That statement is confusing. Backwards compatible isn't a bad thing - I can play many PC games on low end hardware but also experience the game like it was intended on high end hardware. And if you don't continue to release new games you'll see a decline in sales, and economically speaking that'll be bad for Nintendo.

Assuming Nintendo take the route others and I have speculated, the switch 2 will simply be a better portable console with a price premium that will have some exclusive titles, and most titles will be playable on the current switch but the experience will be premium on the switch 2. Exclusive titles (not playable on the current switch or switch lite) will likely include the next Zelda and Metroid prime games.

Nintendo is one of the top 5 game developers in the world, so it's important for cool games to keep coming out to stay there. It's prob their mission statement ;)

              • @cobknob: I meant if the cool games are coming out then that is not a reason why Nintendo wouldn't release the Switch 2 soon, because people can buy those same games and play them on their Switch 2's.

          • @cobknob: Thanks for the list!

            • @ninnypoop: No probs. If u semi like rpgs play the demo for sea of stars, great soundtrack, and vibrant colors = quality game

If your new to the switch I can suggest a dozen more great games both single and same-room multi player.

              • @cobknob: Please do. I am new to the switch, and gaming in general, so always happy to hear recommendations.

                • @ninnypoop: In addition to listed above, and in no apparent order (probably missed a few too):

Haven't their earnings forecasts or something been released already for the new financial year and their is no indication a of new platform being released or made available for preorder. Late second half of '24 at the earliest, '25 before you get one.

Plenty of good all ages titles available and if the whole family plays it like in my house, fair to say you will still extract value from it.

    • The Switch library of games today has the largest collection of the best exclusives all playable on this version of the Switch.
Waiting for the Switch 2/Switch Pro or whatever will yield nothing unless you're dying to play games like FIFA 23 and Hogwarts Legacy with portability.

      • +1

Waiting for the Switch 2/Switch Pro or whatever will yield nothing

Totally disagree. The switch sequel will have more powerful hardware and a FHD display (maybe QHD but unlikely), and quite possibly larger display.

See… Zelda totk, botw, and many other games including indie titles, and future titles including Metroid prime 4 will benefit from upgraded hardware. Will see upto 60fps for FHD in portable mode, and docked will be QHD native with upto 60fps and 4k (upscaled perhaps) 30fps support.

Sometime back news had it that developers received 4k software development kits for the next switch for developing the next gen games, etc. Nintendos next console probably won't be playing AAA titles in native 4k but very likely QHD or 4k upscaled.

        • Nintendo fans buy Nintendo for Nintendo games.
The WiiU was released 10 years ago, and the (WiiU) Mario Kart 8, Zelda, etc runs no differently on the Switch OLED which was released 9 years after the WiiU, particularly as the OLED is of 3rd Hardware Revision of the Switch console. If anyone had a punt to think the 3rd Gen Switch would increase their HW output, it would have been that, but it wasn't.

If you're sitting there waiting to play Mario Kart 8 in 4K on a Nintendo Portable Console, I suggest you really wake up from whatever Utopian dream you're in.
Zelda BOTW and Zelda TOTK, 6 years apart have the exact same graphics, this tells you Nintendo is not keen on rivalling any console and has zero interest in bringing people to its platform based on your mindset of FHD/QHD at 60fps.

People have already played Zelda with a 4090 on 4K and the difference was probably no more than 20%, it added better lighting and shadows.

Nintendo is not keen on rivalling any console

I never said they were. They generally don't compete on that same level as Xbox vs PS. They are in their own bubble. Their intent was to offer a different gaming experience, hence the wii - obviously the wii u failed - and the switch was/is successful.

has zero interest in bringing people to its platform based on your mindset of FHD/QHD at 60fps

I simply speculated that'll be the next gen of hardware based on news reports, other data, and tech costs. Will the next gen of hardware attract a different set of users = most likely, will it win users over from xbox/ps, very likely. Many people already have 4k TVs. A switch successor to play these games at better fps and higher quality would benefit a great deal many.

Not me. And not many. Those cards are expensive. And if I had a system that good I wouldn't. I don't have much experience with upscaling but I know it's really hardware intensive. I don't play games at resolutions that don't have assets developed for those resolutions - seen it fail far too often, bit like the current suggestion we have any sense of AI computing today lol

  • Ah you beat me by a few minutes, I was about to post it after seeing an email from Press Start.

  • +2

Second closest current price is $399 at Big W.

  • +5

Buy yourself an oled if you planning any handheld gaming.

    • I have 4 lol

    • I agree, pay more so it actually looks good.

    • +2

      nope, no 4k.

    • +4

Not a chance. Better off playing Switch games on your PC through an emulator if you want 4K performance

      • -3

sad, till today why switch cant do 4k atleast… any news new switch 3 would launch and play 4k?

        • Why? It's hardware that came out 6 years ago.

    • +1

Nope but the games still look pretty good. I think Zelda TOTK looks gorgeous. The OLED screen is nice but text is not so sharp, it definitely looks better when playing docked on my 55" OLED TV. Nintendo games might not be cutting edge graphics but they still look really good thanks to the art style.

      • -2

        I'll wait for switch 3

        • +3

nice, no faith in Switch 2?

          • @kronk: My money's on Switch 2 supporting 4k but not actually using it in graphically demanding games.

Performance will be closer to last gen consoles than the top current gen ones.

Nintendo have the best - and bestselling - game of 2023, and it doesn't even manage 1080p or even a solid 30FPS 100% of the time.

They just don't need to use pricey modern hardware to make massive profits, and they know it.

            ☹️

            • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: This is what i am complaining. After spending time on ps5 4k at 60hz… Nintendo gives headache at 30hz

              • @Zeee: Playstation 5 has no games.

          • @kronk: Used to be hehehhe. No more especially after ps5

    • its hard for me to play switch after playing on ps5

Really? I haven't even touched my PS5 for the last 4 months (other than for cleaning dust off it), because all the games worth playing have been on Switch (or PC).

      • Yeah no doubt the coop games are on ps5. I just finished playing god of war and plays Tekken 7 online challenges

        • Ah, so you mean your demand for 4k@60fps is flexible enough to accept dynamic 4k with micro-stutters.

  • +4

Paid $420 for the zelda oled. Never regret

  • +1

If MK8 or some other major game was included, this would be tempting.

    • Nintendo not including a game with consoles is so shitty. Each additional unit of a game costs them $0 to produce and it would make the Switch much more attractive.

    • Just get an eshop card at 10% off and wait for good bargins on your wishlist games. Titles like Zelda botw/totk, Mario Odyssey, Starlink, etc will keep u occupied for a while and don't cost much compared to some other titles. There was an MK8 bundle 399$ beginning 2019.

I got an OLED switch (420$~) this year after living with other and having 1 switch since release. I just buy games when sales come except for great titles.

  • +3

Even if it is in it's twilight it's got a huge catalogue of certified bangers, and this is a great price. Though if you play handheld much at all it can't be understated how big of an upgrade the OLED is.

  • Sure the oled has a better display but I can’t game handheld on it for longer than 30 minutes before my hands and fingers cramp up. My Zelda edition sure is pretty though.

    • Get grips, makes a world of difference

    • Use the display stand thingy or get a holder for the switch on a swivel arm and use a pro controller.

  • +1

Get the OLED model. Performance is better!

    • +2

I thought they have the same performance. Only different screen and storage (6.2” LCD/32GB vs 7” OLED/64GB)?

      • -1

Nah. In 1 of the zelda totk release threads here there was a link to a YouTube video showing side by side performance of totk on original switch vs OLED. You could see frame rate drops on the old switch. I can't remem exactly what hardware was changed. If you either Google this or track my comments on zelda posts u might find it.

      • These unwarranted negs lol…

Anyway heres the YouTube video link

        Spoiler Alert

        https://youtu.be/Mik-AAu0glo

  • What's been the best price on the OLED? Wasn't there a pokemon version for 380 or something a while back?

    • +2

That $380 was a one off, best price is usually $449 for OLED model. I got one for that price and stacked with a $30 off Afterpay deal = $419 total.

  • Got the OLED one 2 days ago for $449. Opens it and kids have been playing. Dang! Should’ve got this one.

    • OLED model is much better if they will be playing handheld. Worth it IMO. And $449 is a good price.

      • Even discounting the OLED screen, it's almost unbelievable how much of a QOL game changer the improved stand is for undocked play.

Together with the OLED screen? The synergy is amazing.

  • +4

Where was everyone when Amazon had this for the same price, but with the digital version of Mario Kart 8 included? They did it for Black Friday fresh after its release in 2019 (when I bought mine), and I'm sure they did the same for at least the next couple of Black Fridays.

  • -5

This doesn't look like OLED module. You can tell from the large bezel and fact it doesn't say OLED. Why its cheap too. Undesired item!

    • +2

Um, also, nowhere does anyone say this is the OLED model….

  • Good gift for my nephew aged 10?

    • +5

You’ll be moved to top of the uncle list. Great gift for a 10 year old.
