Same post as @rban945 but included 10% coupon off the product itself that I found while browsing youtube https://youtube.com/shorts/aE8Q8HkT0PQ?feature=share, I myself purchased the df83 for 860$, but the difference between df64 and df83 is pretty minimal and so posting this.

Same deal but cheaper https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/787984

Once again, friendly reminder, both models are for espresso only, no refund or returns which can be an issue for some.

Alternative brewing currently selling the DF64 model for 629 + 9.95 shipping https://alternativebrewing.com.au/products/coffee-tech-df64-….

  • Is there a model that does both filter and espresso?

  • Almost a no brainer if you're looking for a grinder at this pricepoint IMO - haven't personally used the df64coffee website though.

    • Are you saying that this is the best option at this orice point?

      • +1

I would say so yes - everything i've read suggests this would be better for the more 'modern' style of espresso vs anything else sub-$700.

I have a Eureka Mignon Specialita which I got for ~$500 and produces really solid espresso, but I believe the DF64 would be a step up in cup quality. Other comparable grinders cost quite a bit more i.e Niche Zero/Duo, the newer Timemore offerings etc.

        • +2

Niche Zero uses conical burrs instead of flat burrs, so I guess it comes down to one's personal preferences.

I heard that Timemore's pricing was super attractive during the Kickstarter phase, but is much more expensive after. Furthermore, there seems to be a delay for some of the Sculptor for the Australian market, I suspect it is to get electrical compliance.

Having said that, if you buy direct from DF64Coffee, who then gets the manufacturer to dropship to you here, it is unlikely to have the RCM mark.

      • +3

DF64 at its price level is reasonable, but be prepared to have to do some modding to get it perfect. The DF64 I believe is up to version 4 now, so some of the improvements were incorporated into subsequent revisions. The biggest advantage of the DF64 is the ability to use SSP burrs, which the Eureka grinders can't. If you do decide to upgrade burrs, then the grinder itself is cheap, but the burrs are at least $300.

At that price point of almost $900, you might as well go for the DF64V, which has a brushless motor, adjustable speed, and a newer burr design which is similar to SSP HU. You'll be able to go for much longer without the desire to upgrade burrs. Furthermore, most of the issues which people have been fixing with aftermarket or 3D printed parts were addressed in the DF64V, as that was a designed as a cheaper copy/rival to the Lagom P64, which is like the grail of this level of home consumer flat burr grinders.

        • Let me know how your df64v is and I'll also most likely update on this post how the DF83 is compared to eureka :)

Was a bit of a dilemma choosing between the two but couldn't see myself needing a speed adjustment when even in the more expensive options, the speed actually struggles to maintain the set speed.

          • +2

@darkkito: Will do! I wanted the DF64V for the chute which is attached using magnets. So easy to clean and the declumper is a new design too. I was looking at the DF83, but the DF64V is so much smaller, even smaller than the DF64, which won me over as my bench space is limited.

I was originally deciding between the DF64P and DF64V and the V won out because the P would be espresso only and I would likely ended up upgrading the burr set to Sweet Lab cast, which brings the pricing close to each other. I also didn't like that I would have to disassemble the P from underneath where the power circuitry is located if I needed to zero the burr adjustment lever with a new burr set (or if it drifts from use)

DF83 for $860 is a great price - a pity it's not the DLC burrs like the AU models, but given the AU pricing, I wouldn't mind at all! (Especially if upgrading to SSPs at some point)

I would have bought one if I hadn't already backed an 078S. Still happy with my choice for now (remains to be seen once they ship), but yeah would have been a much harder choice for me to make, and may have chosen differently!

    • Definitely agreed, best pricing for DF83 I could find. Only concern is burr alignment…which is to be expected haha

      • +1

Burr alignment can be easily adjusted though, either by rotating the top burr by 1/3 or 2/3, or by shimming with a once-folded piece of aluminium foil if you need finer adjustments.

        • I just got news the df 83 v2 will be shipped with Itamil burrs, expecting some good performance

        • How is ur coffee grinder?

I got my DF83 so fast, the performance has been remarkable but I do see that at the end of the grind cycle, there are a lot of fines being produced.

With filters as well, I'm experiencing the coffee grounds actually get jammed, and can't rotate it back to espresso.

          Hows ur experience so far?

    • I wish I had backed the 78S back when it was on KS, but I had been burnt twice on KS already.

  • +2

Bought a DF83 from these guys. Received it within 7 days (has a UK plug, which is easy to replace after a quick trip to bunnings).
So far I've found that the "plasma generator" does a good job of keeping the chute clear of fines, the large burrs definitely help remove a lot of astringency and bitterness I was getting with my old flat burr Eureka Atom, and the bellows are best used AFTER you've taken the coffee out of the dosing cup because at the end of a grind all you are left with is 1/10th of a gram of fines. Retention is super low.

So make your coffee, then purge the fines and you'll be fine. :P

Also: I contacted the seller and they said that they align the burrs on each unit before sale EVEN if you buy it with the stock italmill burrs. So alignment isn't even an issue.

    • Do you have issues when grinding filter setting and if you want to go back to espresso, coffee bits get stuck on the burr and makes a chipping noise?

      • +1

        I don't drink filter coffee so I couldn't say.
The manual suggests not changing the grind setting while there are beans in there unless it's grinding.
Haven't had any chirping of the burrs adjusting grind for different espresso beans so far though.

  • Do we have to write anything in particular in the order other than select the voltage? It says they need the Hertz too but I'm not sure

    • +1

Not that I know off, Voltage was the only thing I had to select, the product will come with the wrong adapter so will need an adapter to make it work.

Coupon is still active. Just purchased the Df83 with the SSP Burrs for $1386 delivered.

That's a ripper deal considering the same package locally would cost around $2K

    • you may have to pay import tax since it is above 1k.

      • Hopefully not as I would hate to get stung with import tax.

Thanks for sharing the discount code👍

        • Let me know how it goes, I would be surprised if your parcel doesn't get held up due to tax

          • +1

@darkkito: Unit arrived with no extra charge. Shipping was extremely fast.

Only issue I had was my coffee didn't come out properly causing massive clogging issue with the declumper.

Haven't had the chance to investigate as I'm away but I'm probably going to have to take the declumper out, and give it a good clean.

The coffee was either being grinded to fine or the declumper wasn't installed properly.

            • +1

@paracaps: yeah the sweet spot for me was around 13 with stock burrs. I would assume its the same for you.

I did assume esspresso would be around 5 but was dead wrong.

I also wouldnt do water spray with this machine, static tbh isnt much of an issue.

Coupon is still working. Just bought a DF64E.

    • +1

I actually would hold atm, the DF64 new version 2 is coming out soon, it will have changes to be more similar to the df83.

Good chance df64 or df64e will get even cheaper

      • +1

I saw the version 2 presale, but I'm stuck in a buy now or wait a year scenario. I don't think the Breville Smart Grinder I'm upgrading from will last much longer, unfortunately, so pulled the trigger.

I'm 100% looking forward to using a machine with less clumping and no retention. BSG will move to work.

        • great upgrade, you will experience a lot higher clarity.

One thing I would recommend, don't use the bellows when machine is on. Hit the bellow hard. Use WDT to stir up the coffee vigorously in the actual dosing cup. You will pull great consistent shots doing this. The reason for is the machine tends to have fines towards the end, so if you just put it into your portafilter and wdt, most likely it won't be enough.

          Enjoy your machine!

          • @darkkito: I've been watching plenty of YT reviews, so aware of some of the quirks and short comings. Thanks for the tips.
