Do these record 24/7 (if connected to power) or only when detects motion?

    • In terms of the recording, there's space for up to a 512GB card in the hub thing, and cloud storage too (if you subscribe to that), and I know I've seen the option for continuous recording for other products in the Tapo range before. However, hard-wiring power will remove their IP-rating, making them unsuitable for outdoor use. If you don't care about that, then you'll probably be fine.

Cheaper, higher res tapo cameras exist if you want to wire it.

I only just bought today but pretty sure only records on detection, can view/record in app manually 24/7 though that would chew battery

  • Has anyone used this for a while and how's the battery life is reality?

    • +3

10% battery usage over 12 days so far on my busiest camera - driveway, at least two 15 second recordings each day

      • Fair enough - online reviews found said like 1% every day. Thank you!

So the hub can be set to trigger/play the alarm (and only the hub not the camera itself), I guess?

        • +1

Mine is less than 1% a day, medium to low traffic and detections.

          • @Tock: That's good to know, thank you. I am planning to use this to detect potential intruders who might walk up to our front door or the side of the house at night. Assuming the alarm will be triggered and played at the hub to wake me up, would my scenario/use case work with this product?

            Lastly, is the hub wifi-enabled?

            • +1

@beOson: Hub is wifi so you can view camera while away from home.

I think camera plays alarm. Not sure if hub can be set too as well

            • +1

@beOson: There appears to be an option at each camera to trigger an alarm at the hub. I'll test it and will let you know if it works.
My hub is hard wired to my router, and it's currently using it's own WiFi network to connect to the cameras. I can't see the hub or cameras on my WiFi but I can see (but cannot join) a new WiFi network after the hub and cameras were set up. There is an option to connect the hub to your regular WiFi but I haven't tested that.

              • @OZBargainer in SA: Much appreciated! Yeah, I just can't be bothered with having to connect the hub directly to the WiFi router because my main Deco M5 unit's Ethernet ports are all in use. So, I was hoping it can be set up and operated completely through WiFi.

                • +2

@beOson: Yep you can do everything you are talking about - remote control, alarms on hub, scheduling home/away, phone notifications, and so on. But double check the manual as i believe the hub must be hard wired to router.

                • +1

@beOson: You will need to set up the hub via ethernet first, after which you can get the hub to search for WiFi networks and then giving it the WiFi password. It'll only detect and connect to a 2.4GHz WiFi network.

  • Can you add additional cameras? Or do you have to run another base station for every two cameras and they run independent of each other?

Cannot comment on these wireless models but we bought a tapoo wired camera to monitor our kitty whilst we were overseas on holidays and it worked a treat, the image is fantastic, it deals with the horrific contrast we get in the morning from the sun rising really well and the app is super easy to use - some features are locked behind a paid subscription but they are not a necessity, a breath of fresh air from products that get kneecapped by the companies almost required subscription service.

  • Honestly battery power are crap. Yes it convenience and can be place any where. Well placing any where is not true either because you will need to climb up there every few months to change the batteries. You better hope you don't installed it to high or hard to reach spot LOL. Not to mention you will be always stressing thinking I need to charge/replace the batteries every few months.

I run POE cameras (and wifi) in multi story residential properties, but wireless cameras have their place too…there are places like my own unit building where i RENT where running POE or even power cable (no external outlets) and drilling through brick to do so is going to be a super hard no….in that case, these are perfect. So dont outright tell people theyre wrong based on what you do…you do what suits the enviroment/case

My only objection to these is that buying them from Amazon (a hard no in my house) props up the worlds worst human being, so he can keep popping himself off into space in his penis rocket to go edge himself in zero gravity….while he treats employes as slaves, in 2023….

    • Solar panels can be bought for $99 each and can be plugged in permanently to keep the batteries topped up at all times.
