That’s glorious, Qantas status, and the qantas fare is probably $6-$8k, so if you don’t mind the stop over or transit, happy days …

JAL is OW so you'll earn similar SC I believe?

14 hours in tokyo on the way over is a feature, not a bug imo

Yup @ Haneda you're so close to everything. Go out and enjoy an evening in Tokyo, have some late night beers at a local Izakaya, spend a few hours in a manga cafe and then catch a taxi back to the airport.

  • Pretty good

Flew JAL from Tokyo to BKK earlier in the year. Excellent experience. Food same as in coach but the rest makes up for it.

Also cheap connecting fares from Perth, booked it for family at around $2,900 return via Sydney and the Qantas domestic flights are Flex Economy so it's cheap to upgrade with points (depending on availability). They are stopping over in Tokyo so the detour via Sydney isn't too bad.

We're doing this flight in a couple of weeks, paid $4200 each I believe. Departure times from Sydney and Tokyo are very reasonable, and as others have said, a night in Tokyo is a good thing, especially after a few years of not having done the long trip to Europe!

  • Premium economy just one class above standard economy tickets so does that mean First/business class (if any on this flight) would be 5k+?

    • Yes. I clicked the link to the deal, changed to business. Was $5,722

Interesting flight path, it doesn't go the way you'd think from looking at a two-dimensional map of the world. You cross over Finland, Sweden and Denmark, and for some of the journey you're over the northern coastline of Russia:

    • At the moment, flights are still avoiding Ukraine and Russia and most airlines from 'Western-aligned' countries are taking some very interesting routings. For North Asian airlines like JAL, this adds a 2000-3000km detour to the direct route.

This map better shows the current routes roughly. Tokyo to Paris flights go east over Alaska, the top of Canada and Greenland. Paris to Tokyo flights also go east, but over Istanbul and stay south of Russia's southern border.

      • Thanks!

That route from Gambell to Paris is scary, almost over the north pole. I know how incredibly safe air travel is, but should anything go wrong, that route has no possibility of a safe ditching for much of its length.

  • I really like premium economy, especially in a 2-3-2 cabin as it feels so much more spacious. During the day, these seats are great for watching a few movies. When it comes down to sleeping though, I find premium economy almost as bad as regular economy. Also, many premium economy seats have fixed armrests so if you’re thinking of flying with small kids, they won’t be able to be on your lap and spread over multiple seats.

    • That’s why hoping in economy you get a whole row to yourself if the flight isn’t full… are flights to Japan back to being full again 🤪😬
