Best Way to Clean Microfibre Towels

I've had some issues with my main drying towels becoming hydrophobic. I used P&S Rags to Riches and this has helped. But at $1/wash looking for something else for regular washing.

The Rag Company had a video (well two actually). The new one just promotes Rags to Riches, but the one from 6 years ago they recommend Optimum Power Wash and vinegar to finish (in the fabric softener bit - although they wrongly said bleach compartment).

Funny when I typed this search in to OzB the ads came up with 2 products - both cheaper than R2R.

Bowden's Own Microfibre Cloth & Applicator Wash & Restore 1L @ $21.95/L - 20mls/wash so 44c/wash j- even less with Ebay Plus.

Mint MWash @ $50/4L + shipping (so say $60/4L shipped) - 50mls/wash so about 75c/wash.

Or something else and just use the R2R regularly if they become hydrophobic?

I've used thr Bowdens wash for a fair few years now with good results on both cheap nasty and good qaulity microfibre cloths.

    • I'm thinking I'll grab a 1L bottle from Sparesbox at $17 (on Ebay) and try it. This would be enough for 50 washes.

    • Do you mean their microfibre wash or something else?

Yes their Microfibre Cloth & Applicator wash. Link in the description above.

Buy another 20 pack from amazon basics / bunnings.

    • what a waste

      • Guessing just a piss-take. Given I've mentioned I don't want to spend $1/wash would make no sense to throw them out after one use (even if they were just cheapies from bunnings - and some are cheapies from Costco but I use them a lot before throwing them out).

        • At no point did I say to throw them out. Personally I use my blower to dry the car off.

Hi OP, I don't know if this can be of any help, but when I wash my towels, I use 1/2 cup of vinegar in the softener compartment of my front loader. This helps to keep them fluffy as it removes residues from the laundry detergent. This may work on microfibre clothes as well, and it may be worth a try. Cheers.

Yes I do. Works very well with the microfibre. And if they aren't very dirty I actually just use water and vinegar in the softener compartment.

Had an issue with my microfibre cloths leaving its microplastics everywhere - drying my car would take forever. I used Bowden's Own and changed up the washing method. Kinda fixed it.
Thinking of replacing the cloths I have now and just using Bowden's. Would recommend.

The Bowden’s microfibre wash is great. I use it for all my microfibre towels.

    • Good price too. Less than half the R2R so have ordered a bottle. $5 off atm via Ebay plus puts it at $17/bottle delivered. 34c/wash.

  • Make sure you arent using fabric softener in your wash / that your powder doesnt have added fabric softener.

    • Yeah don't use normal products. Definitely not powder as it can cause scratching.

  • Sunlight soap bar from Colesworth does fantastic jobs for me. I was them frequently after each use so spending 30-50cents each wash won't make sense for me tbh

    • Are you washing by hand?

      • mostly yes, unless I have a bunch of them to clean then I just pop them in a machine with a little bit of Omo :)

        • Interesting. The rag company specifically say not to use powder as it doesn't always dissolve (in their youtube video a few years ago).

  • Keep your washing machine temperature low as well, usually below 60 degrees but lower for certain towels

    • Normally I have it at either cold or 30 tops.
