I'm sure Penang is nice, but that seems to be a long time there.

Penang is nice but IIRC Malaysia only gives you a 90 day visa as an Australian tourist on entry.
You'd do ok with a week there - five months does indeed seem a bit excessive.

Could drive to Kuala Lumpur and boat to other islands nearby but defs too long in Penang it's a very quiet place

Night markets every night and some of the best street food in Malaysia.. There also used to be a time where scooter gangs would come out and compete in coin picking up contests.

You could easily spend a few weeks there just eating food.. 😅

The hidden nonya restaurants are my fave way to spend time in Penang 🤫

Perhaps some of the best street food in the world? I'm badly in need of a holiday at the moment, and while I really want to just lie in a hammock on a beach and go snorkelling, the Penang food is calling me.

Daytime at the beach. Night time STREET food eating. "Two birds with one stone".

        • Prehaps yes! 😅

I mean, you could do both at the same time and just snorkel in a giant bowl of the many variations of Laksa! 🤣 Assam Laksa may suprise some of you!

@WasBargain: Full disclosure, I lived up there for a couple of years, back in the day. Gurney Drive in it's heyday, before they built the hawker center at the north end. I'd go back (and have) for the food, but I'm not gonna swim in the water. I guess there's always cocktails by the pool :)

            • @guyvb: Hahahaha, I still rememeber mum saying she wouldn't dare swim in it aswell as a kid.. 😅 Glad to hear some things never change.. 🤣

Drive up to Thailand as well!

      • Hatyai is good if you're a family man family and love your kids (and sometimes others..)

do we need to go through immigration for checkin back ?

That small time window for "self-transfer" is quite scary. Jetstar will land with a delay and you may miss the next flight and suffer.
