People dilute it down from 100% to 70% because the 30% water acts as an agitatent or whatever and actually cleans better than 100%. But there's definitely use cases for 100%. It's easy to dilute yourself so 100% is best to get.

      • +3

70% works better as a disinfectant. Higher concentrations apparently act too fast and don't penetrate cell walls as effectively: https://blog.gotopac.com/2017/05/15/why-is-70-isopropyl-alco…

        • I think higher concentrations evaporate quicker so they don't stay on surfaces long enough to kill the nasties. a bit of water traps the iso on the surface for longer.

    That's Christmas drinks sorted.

it's quite bitter so you need to add something sweet/dry from the Schweppes mixer range to offset it

      • +1

Good idea but due to cost of living pressures I'm just going to have it straight up on the rocks

  • +12

Hey! Why is the discount code the same as my password to internet banking!?!?

    • I know! Good thing I access my online banking through wifi

    • +1

interesting. care to share your username n the bank?

      Oh lord.

I was about to sign up to order and there's a section at checkout that asks if you want to tip.. 🤢🤮 Definitely not signing up now.

Price about the same (without code anyway) at $24 for Melbourne solvents and your code doesn't work on this site but grabbed one for pickup anyway, thanks!

      • The code for Melbourne Solvent will be different. They offer a 10% off first order. A pop-up should appear on the homepage offering you a 10% discount.

    • Tried Melbourne Solvents and their only shipping option was Sendle which was going to cost ~$30 to ship to Bendigo. Sydney Solvents have Couriers Please back on their website, so by the time I by a tap for a 5l bottle, plus the 5l bottle and they have some 500ml spray containers which I’d use for different dilutions but they are on back order but two of those and just under $9 shipping they blow the doors off the competition - I tried an eBay link in Victoria (Metro Melbourne) but they won’t even ship to me.

Looks like I’ll place an order with Sydney Solvents. I sudden even get the Melbourne Solvents welcome discount email so that was a bit annoying as well.

I realise shipping highly flammable solvents around carries risk to the courier, but not sure why Melbourne Solvents would charge me over $30 for a similar order using Sendle and not even have another courier option.

You can mix this with dimineralised water to make DIY Isocol at a fraction of the price. Pour into a spray bottle and It can be used for sanitising surfaces (e.g. mobile phone) or make-up brushes in between washes and more

  • Thanks OP. Xmas gift for my father in law sorted.

  • +3

Thanks OP. $6.46 shipping to Sydney.

    • Why is mine coming up $15 shipping…

  • Anyone from Sunshine Coast want to go in together for cheaper shipping?

You can use this as car winshield wiper cleaner, spectacle cleaner and window cleaner as well.

    • Can you please give a little more detail on the car use?

Is there anythign else I can use it for re the car?

      • You can dilute heaps to use in car windshield cleaner. Not sure about other things in car.

      • +2

From Memory, doesn’t isopropyl alcohol perish rubber? Dilution would want to be significant. Please correct me f I am wrong. I tend to use a surfactant like bugoff or similar.

        • Thanks.
          So much for that then.
Not much else I can use it for then.

  • Damn paid $26.40 last week. RIP me.
NOT AS BAD AS THE $70-something I paid during COVID

  • Goes well with orange juice ?

    • +2

Absolutely. Alternate this combo with petrol and silver paint sniffing for a real good time!

  • aww, $33.24 shipping to QLD. use quite a bit of ISO with electronics and SLA printing too. Paid $40 for my last 5L bottle, shipped.

    • Try Melbourne Solvents to see if that offers lower delivery cost.

  • On amazonbits $30

  • +2

    Thanks OP. Xmas moonshine sorted

  • +1

Goddang when I checked a few days ago it was still offering the cheap postage, y'all ruined it for me lol. Maybe it's just because it's close to Christmas they've removed that option…

  • Any cheaper place to buy for QLD folks? shipping is expensive interstate :(

  • That is cheap but I don't know what to do with all that alcohol. you only need a bit to clean

    • -1

You may not need all that bit but some others. e.g. for making shaver cleaning solution with 500ml glycerin and 150ml D-Limone instead of paying to Bezos $10 or so for a renew fill cartridge. All cost about 40-50 bucks last for almost lifetime.

    • Depends how you use it. Mix it to 70% and use in a spray bottle it goes quick. Dabbing a cloth with 100% for wiping my 3d printer bed, lasts ages.

  • Had this to degrease before spray painting or applying ceramic coating to car, clean computer/phone screen. Still has lots left.

  • +1

Looks like the cost of living prices has come down to this instead of Dan Murphy.

    • How did you do it? Showing $15 standard delivery

  • I bought Melbourne Solvents via eBay for I think $5 delivery.

Edit: It was free delivery, this is what I bought, was only a reasonable price using eBay coupons.

  • Was looking for this! Great timing. I’ve been watching Midwest magic cleaning on YouTube and he makes his own cleaner and it works amazingly.

  • Good price. Picked up a 1L from there some months back for $10. 5L for $23.40 good price.

Isopropyl alcohol is ridiculously overpriced in this country. It shouldn't cost much more to mass produce than Metho. A single example from Ameritopia: 1 litre at 91% concentration for $4 USD at Walmart; https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-91-Isopropyl-Alcohol-Antis…

In comparison 500 ml of Isopropyl at Bunnings (unspecified concentration) is almost $28 AUD: https://www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-500ml-isopropyl-alcohol_…

Everyone is so greedy in Australia. Everything is far more expensive than it should be.

    • +2

yeah, all the diggers products at bunnings are overpriced. they must have a cosy relationship with bunnings

      • +2

I think so because there are no other brands of IPA to choose from.

  • $26 + $15 shipping same seller via Kogan. Only a few $ extra on shipping if you buy more.

"Delivery for me in Melbourne was $7.91 using Courier Please option" and $15 to Sydney metro. Doesn't make sense at all.

  • What's the shelf life for this if I only want to use small amounts at a time?

    • Fine as long as you make sure the container is 100 per cent sealed.

    • I put it in smaller containers as soon as I buy it. It is Hygroscopic, which means it attracts water to itself (like most brake fluid). So keep it in small, sealed, full containers if you'd like to keep it at 100% or close to it. It will absorb water rapidly from the air until it gets to a concentration of around 65 to 70% I think from memory, and the more moisture in the air the quicker this will happen.

  • Thanks for posting was getting a bit low on the old ISO. I didn't see any shipping options that were cheap to Vic from Syd Solvents.. Would have cost $50.49 inc shipping to Melbourne. But did use the Melbourne Solvents website that OP had linked and the total was $31.53 inc shipping.

  • Denatured alcohol $9 for the 10ltr if anyone interested with the code. Shipping for me $5.91 with couriersplease NSW

  • It has been at this price or cheaper for the last year or so. Cupid stunts who are buying it for more think it a bargain

    • Romantic xoxo

  • -1

Thanks. Just confirm this can be used as vodka (?)

    • No!!! 250mls can kill you. You can only drink ethanol out of all the alcohol types, and this ain't ethanol.

    • It is deliberately made so it can't be reversed to drinkable alcohol without it costing way more than just buying alcohol. This stuff will do bad things to your body.

      • Synthesized from the reaction of propylene with sulfuric acid, followed by hydrolysis apparently. Not anything you'd want to reverse.

  • Perfect for cleaning 🌿😉

  • Good for cleaning records, combined with demineralised water

  • Code for Melbourne solvent LGBZZXN7 for 10% off

    • "This discount has reached its usage limit"

      • Somebody might have used it…

  • Sneaky of Sydney Solvents.
Shortly after this was posted Couriers Please shipping to Sydney was $5.91, now it's gone up to $6.51!
They've been playing with shipping to profiteer since OzBargain got them an increase in demand. That explains the funny (& lack of) shipping choices people are experiencing.

    • I was about to order, but now I think I'll hold off and look around some more.

    • +3

…you get pretty pissed off over $0.60 huh?

      • Remember where you are…

        • where only the cheapest of the cheap are not afraid to tread?

  • Oh yea, time to get crunk

  • That amount would get pen ink out of surfaces for years!!

  • +1

Seems the cheaper postage is back. Thanks op.

  • If I add 60% water, does this make 40% vodka?

  • Weekend sorted

  • Can I make limoncello out of this?

    • You want ethanol. iso should never be consumed.

    • Only if you want trip to hospital.

      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK493181/

      • It’s all toxic.

This doesn’t say anything other than it’s bad if consumed at huge volumes, and even then you don’t die

        • Yeah, hence a trip to the hospital. Doesn't look like it's good for population control of silly people.

  • This or Vodka for smelly feet, just dab with cotton balls.

    • +3

I have some iso in a spray bottle and I spray my the inside of my shoes a few nights a week. My stinky feet problem vanished when I started doing that.
Better than all those overpriced crappy shoe deodorant sprays!

      • Nice tip!

        • Not sure, but if you buy the green bottles. vodka or the like may be cheaper.

  • Free pickup and can drop by pondi
