Melbourne OzBargainers! Best Electricity and Gas Provider??

OzBargainers in Melbourne, I need your help!!

I'm trying to figure out the best electricity and gas provider in Melbourne but there's so much to look at I'm completely lost.

And as we all know on this site, best means bang for buck. And when it comes to utilities, I think it boils down to which is the cheapest, all things considered (e.g. connection/disconnection fee, peak or non peak rate, flagfall, etc).

Do any of you recommend switching retailers frequently? (like the equivalent of sim slutting…)

Electricity and gas doesn't need to be by the same provider.

Help me guys! TIA!!

EDIT: Anyone know of providers that favour super low usage?

    • Not for VIC

      • If you put in a VIC postcode the website directs you to the VIC one.

    best means bang for buck.

No, it doesn't. Lots of people buy premium products they perceive to add value and not necessarily the cheapest item around.

https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au should help you. Everyone's situation is different and may have different results.

    • True, I suppose the definition of "bang" here is subjective..

      Thanks for the link.

      • What does it mean to you?

        • Cheap. And no long term contracts. I use very little power, so the daily connection fee usually kills me first lol

        • And customer service must be decent. Doesn't have to be amazing. Just not crap or dodgy.

Just put your details into https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/ and sign up to whoever is the cheapest provider listed. Its a government comparison website which compares all the providers without the results being skewed by referral fees and sponsorships. Just check it every 6 months or so and see if a new provider is at the top and change if so.

Otherwise doesnt really make a difference which company as they all use the same underlying infrastructure as far as im aware.

You must be doing ok if you can afford electricity and gas

Why do you need electricity and gas? You can get it for free at the park across the road

Depends on the size of your household and how much you use. For large useage, there’s some that offer wholesale rates but you pay a monthly membership. For small usage, that option would be too expensive.
I review yearly and put it in a spreadsheet. Or the easy option is what @EarlSquirellson said.
Don’t forget to factor in signup bonus and Cashrewards/ShopBack too.
Recently moved from Lumo to Powershop.

    • Ha I'm on the low usage side. I fire up the split system a few times each week, but according to my bill I'm using virtually nothing compared to my neighbours.

But good to know that there are high usage options out there. Thanks!
