                • @gavincato: That makes sense as my calculations are based on 10000-12000 km/year. How do insurance premiums compare?

              • @soan papdi: Are you just comparing them based on size, outright cost, and cost to fill up? Because to me that is only one part of the equation, for example the EVs are usually faster and also benefit from tax advantages (ie, no FBT if less than 87k or whatever LTC has got to now). In fact, if you look at the net impact of the after tax and before tax payments on a Telsa Performance vs a mid range Audit Q5, they're similar (the higher cost of the Tesla offset by the tax advantages of it largely being before tax), but the Teslas have been holding value better and have lower operating costs.

Obviously, it vastly depends on what you want in a car and how it will be paid for.

Saying that, I am in a market for a new car now and have NFI what I want to do. Tossing up between absolute extremes of getting another Landcruiser, an electric, or even an old ICE classic like an EVO.

                • @greennick: Currently my target car is quite boring, either a Japanese or Korean ICE or Hybrid. Never going to go for an Audi or any such luxury brand. When I compare cars, I am looks at 5/7 seater and features. So RAV4 (ICE or Hybrid) or CX5 vs EV6 or CX-60 or XC-40. I don't plan to take car finance or novated lease, just cash from offset. My power bills are very low (approx $60/mo), so don't have solar panels either (ROI/TCO does not make it worth it), so EV recharge is going to be from power retailer.

We are just waiting for the supply chain to settle down and look seriously next year. Our current 12 year old i30 is showing its age. Same here, no idea what to get but not in a rush either.

              • @soan papdi: Yeah, absolutely right.
But when comparing a Tesla you should use a Audi/BMW/Lexus/Acura/Genesis in similar size than a VW/Toyota/Hyndai/Honda.

Then you will see that Tesla is an absolute steal if you consider the TCO.

Going to lose big? It's just a car… At worst you can just sell it later as it's not like they depreciate a lot in value.

Given the rising cost of fuel and the future of petrol VS electric cars its a bit of an odd prediction though. Most people would put the odds the other way.

      Ok?

    • +3

Ok enjoy 2 dollars a litre then? I will continue to pay $0 for charging.

      • I’ve had $2.38 for premium at the pump, made me think I should start collecting shopper dockets. EV are great if you can charge at home and do 200km a day. I commute to work, almost got a new job that would have had 80 km round car trip, it had me looking at EV, and test drive, didn’t get the job so it’s back to train commute.

      • -1

Good on you for able to afford an EV and self-contained charging infrastructure at home, please don’t make fun of others who either can’t afford or choose not to own EVs. This kind of arrogance adds to my list of reasons not to become an EV owner.

        • I don't, Queensland has many free AC chargers at every shopping center with free parking. Been charging at my local shopping center for free for over a year. I think you are assuming every ev owner puts there own infra in, when there are so many free chargers why bother? Download an App called plug share its what every ev owner users. to find all free chargers. Queensland has the most.

          • @kungfuman:

I don't, Queensland has many free AC chargers at every shopping center with free parking.

Yes I noticed a lot of hybrid drivers charging the 1% missing off of their battery at the the free chargers and leave them there for 12 hours at a time. Seems fair to the other EV drivers

            • @serpserpserp: Never happens at my local shopping centre at the hyperdome. The great thing up here no ones an arsehole we all communicate with each other.

Can't see myself buying an non-EV if I can afford to buy it, just not my cup of tea.

      • yeah I wouldn't get pleasured into it, I have wanted a tesla since 2018 though that was way before this ev push existed. I wasn't in it for the fact it was an ev I just like telsa cars. I think stick with what you like. and maybe at some point they will introduce ev conversions everywhere for any car.

all electric vehicles seem to look tacky but this car did it right

Not sure who downvoted you, but I agree with you Seal is one of the best looking EVs at the moment.

@edfoo: It looks like deformed Supra

          • @edfoo: I can't believe because of a completely unrelated comment to my neg. The neg was revoked.
How silly is that. The neg was related to the car not having the indicator stalk and design concept being dangerous / ridiculous. But it gets revoked because of a comment I made on the byd seal appearance.

          • @edfoo: but seal isn’t the $45 BYD when people hear about cheap BYD , seal is a sedan not an SUV and some EVs are designed to also attract SUV buyers and SUV buyers have their own requirements.

        • Xiaomi su7 is probably the only car that beats it…hopefully we get it in oz

        • +1

Kia EV6 GT for me, I don't even like SUV's, but it's pretty! (Probably cause it's not that tall, and not that SUV looking)
          Pity the pricing is redic!

          • @BlasterBoy: I like everything about the Kia except the pricing and it's rear 😅

    • -5

If ever i bought an EV, I certainly wouldn't buy a BYD , i was in Shenzhen in January and watched as one burst into flames outside my hotel.. messy very messy

        Can happen to any EV.

Yet significantly more likely to happen to any combustion engine vehicle.

@ToothPickUser: At least the fire's easier to put out than an EV one.

            • @KARMAAA: options to put out burning car, hose and DIY, bucket and DIY or fire brigade and outsource, let me think what I would do.

            @ToothPickUser:

Yet significantly more likely to happen to any combustion engine vehicle.

It's not actually. ICE vehicles do have a higher rate of fire but almost none of them are spontaneous while the car is off that consume the entire vehicle within seconds.

Imagine an electric school bus just spontaneously combusts with a load of kids inside. It's a very real risk. Less than 1 in 10 million chance, but when it happens it will be the front page of every news paper in the world.

          • @ToothPickUser: Absolutely incorrect.

      • +5

I don't know man.. if they just kept the indicator system the same the other parts of the 24 revision are actually quite nice. But that's such a deal breaker.

        • -1

FSD is coming. People won’t even touch indicator stalks/buttons.
Wait around 5 years and there will be robotaxies everywhere and cars will have no steering wheels and front seats will rotate for on the go meetings.

          • +2

@bhunter101: That's fine but this was a bad decision in the interim.

            • @maverickjohn: It’s a US based company where most people will use FSD.
Elon knows people will hate having no stalk so those who can afford teslas will just get FSD. More income for him.

          • +3

@bhunter101: Nonsense. We live in straya, it'll never be allowed here even if it is elsewhere. Also this discussion happened 5 years ago and 5 years before that. Won't happen.

          • +1

@bhunter101: FSD isn't here. You still need indicator stalks. Buttons which move with your steering wheel are such a step backwards.

          • @bhunter101: does that mean they won’t need me to do food deliveries and i should start training for another career ?

          • +1

@bhunter101: I got told that 5 years ago.

          • @aka nioh: I left you no choice since it was the right comment.
            But thank you.

            • +1

@maverickjohn: It’s indicative that this discussion is heading in no particular direction.

      • O i agree with u man removal of the stalks is a bloody outrage.

    • Such an own goal by Elon considering how worried he is about Chinese EVs taking over the market. They have stalks.

      • the issue is they will never take over the U.S. market because they will just block the chinese car markers.
the other thing is with all the problems and bugs Chinese car makes have and the issues as well people will soon learn its not worth getting Chinese brands.

I'd be seriously tempted by this if it was eligible for the $6k Qld rebate, unfortunately the LR model is about $3k over the threshold and I need an AWD. Existing inventory of previous LR M3 qualify but there's something about them that would make me sad every time I looked at it;)
I've reached out to Elon on X for a discount for OZB members but strangely enough he hasn't got back to me yet:)
