Still buying 9th gen for kids.

    • +1

Which is now discontinued so likely to be some deals coming up.

    • +1

Yep, after waiting to see if today's news would change anything, I just bought one using gift cards from Officeworks, with an Apple Pencil (price-beating the Apple Education Store) and it was still cheaper than this.

    • 9th gen doesn't have USB-c yeah? Why is it still a better choice for kids?

      • +3

Why is usb-c important to kids?

Kids just use it to watch stuff and play simple games/minecraft/roblox, an older model does that perfectly well for less money than the newer models

As having another cable tie in the house would be annoying. Are there no other upgrades on the 10th gen?

          • +9

@kulprit: Yes, having to have one other cable in a house is a nightmare. May as well pay several $100 more to avoid that almost life threatening scenario

Or use one of the 50 lighting cables that most apple users have laying around to

            • +1

@dtc: Except i don't have or want any other apple devices. I only need an iPad as school requires one.

          • +12

@kulprit: I mean apart from the obvious design change, there's a larger screen (10.2 vs 10.9), newer chip (A14 vs A15), better camera (8MP/1080p Video vs 12MP/4K Video), camera positioning (portrait vs landscape), Touch ID (home button vs power button), WiFi (5 vs 6), LTE (4G vs 5G), and finally Keyboard support (Folio vs Magic).

            • -1

              @wellzi: Thanks, very helpful.

            • @wellzi:

              (A14 vs A15)

              A13 vs A14.

              • @Dogsrule: Yeah I tried to edit, but because it was already replied to, OzB wouldn't let me… by then I couldn't be bothered creating a new comment. Good pick up and thanks for calling out. It is, indeed, A13 —> A14.

                • @wellzi: All good! Pretty lame of Apple not to release an 11th gen with at least the A15, A14 is 3.5 years old now.

                  • +1

@Dogsrule: Yeah agreed, especially since they're both on 5nm.

          • +1

@kulprit: at this stage I have more lightning cables than usb c

      • 3.5 jack?

    • +2

      Baller kids have Minis.

  • +14

    Waiting for a sub $500 (new) 10th gen ⏳⏳⏳

    • +3

That day will arrive. It's just going to be like shopping for 9th gen ipad now.

    • +1

Wanna wait another year or 2?

    • +7

Understand this is OZB but the fact you are tossing between buy/not buy for $59 bucks you prob don't need it lol in which case you could save $500

      • +10

OZB run sround for 50c savings

        • +4

I don't know man, some posts take you back to the old Ozbargain days where saving a few dollars made you feel like a king, but then you see RRP posts for things like PS5 and Switch here that make you question does the website have to hand over its badge.

      • +1

But this is OzB so you buy first and think later.

    • if u get a good trade on ASX u can make couple g's in a few days easy, risking $10k-20k. i lost so much $$$ gambling on ASX, $100 is meaningless to me.

ozb makes me laugh with its penny pinching

      • Pay back the COVID relief you thieving scum 😁

  • -7

Is this only the US store?

If so does it ship to AU?

    • +3

Huh? Set your store to AU.

      • +1

My bad, clicked around and accidentally set store to US, fixed now :)

      • +1

New RRP is $599, available from Apple direct. So this is $40 off. Not great, but if you need one ASAP it is better than paying RRP.

        • -1

It’s not discounted, it’s standard Apple edu price

    • +3

I find these price update posts useful anyway when I'm looking for "what was the price of this thing in 2024"

  • +8

64GB…can't do much about it. it can't even install Genshin Impact

    • +2

You can… just not too much more afterwards. 64GB is enough if you utilise the cloud efficiently for everything else.

      • Well, you can, but only the basic game.

    • +22

it can't even install Genshin Impact

      Good.

  • Was about to buy second hand ipad air 5 64 wifi for $515, not sure if this would be better option, for kids

    • +15

This can save you another $500 :)
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/831794

      • But they’ll need the optional backboard and ring DLC plus a place to mount it. Unless they will only use public facilities.

      • Oh no no, I will only install reading eggs and others apps to teach them reading and math

        • So why not then get a refurbished 7th gen for ~$250?

  • This one or samsung tab s9 fe ?

    • +9

Ipad any day, android tablet if you are only use case is streaming content.

      • I have both but I use my galaxy tab a lot more than my ipad.

    • I too say iPad I have both and have a lot of issues with the samsung tab A9, obviously A9 is a lot cheaper but the difference definitely worth it.

      • +3

Samsung A series are definitely not worth whether the phone or tablet. He is asking about tab S9 FE that has same price point not the cheaper tab A9.

        • I must be blind , lol

    • +1

Depends which ecosystem. As standalone tablet, ipad. Otherwise if other devices samsung/android - I'd go S9 FE

  • Does Officeworks price beat Apple Education?

    • +2

      No Apple Education beats Officeworks

      • +1

That's why I was asking, would Officeworks price beat Apple's lower price?

  • Looking forward release of a new Mini tonight.

    • Mini will probably be released later this year

  • +9

Was going to buy an iPad if the RBA raised rates (to fight back). I'll hold off until next meeting…

  • I thought I need uni email id to buy from education store, above link allows me to check out as guest. what am i missing ?

    • +2

It has always been like that (no edu validation).

    • Thanks, I’m buying the iPad Pro 12.9”. Both the 256gb and 512gb are about $170 less in the education store.
      I didn’t know if I could stretch to 512gb. I think I can now.

  • +3

Still too expensive given the A14 processor. A15 was a decent jump in performance and efficiency. Better buying 9th gen if you find it at bargain prices.

    • +3

9th gen is probably more "education" friendly due to 3.5mm audio jack.

10th gen has USB-C charging, could be an important factor for some.

      • Can you use any old USB-C cable with iPads now?

        • +1

Yeah, doesn't have to be an Apple cable.

      • Did all the new USB-C iPads lose the jack?

      • Yes! The audio is an issue.

  • We have 4 * 9th generation Ipad 64Gb Wifi. Just quoted on Apple website. It indicated that it has trade-in value of $210 each. Is it worth upgrading to this 10th Gen for an additional $349 each? Sooner or later the 9th gen will not be supported by Apple.

    • I’d say no. The 9th generation will continue to get updates for a long time and will be more than capable device for years to come.

  • Shouldnt we see a drop on the 5th Gen iPad Airs too given new 11" model release? Not yet, it seems.

Be good to see something like this price again

    • I'm keen to see a price drop of ipad air 5th gen.

For the 256gb wifi versin it is still at $1147 from OW (I purhased two before at $1089), but the 6th gen one would only cost $1179.

  • +1

Does apple store giftcard work on apple edu store?

    • +2

Sure does, used a bonus gift card from an earlier education store purchase, with the balance paid by a discounted gift card, both accepted.

  • d'oh……. just bought a 9th gen through amazon for kids at school

does anyone know if a change of mind return would be accepted? the box has been opened but the ipad is in perfect condition.

    • Check the product page of the item you purchased, if it has eligible for change of mind returns within 30 days, you’re good.

      • It does, but does the box still need to be sealed ?

        • Nah it does need to be.

    • It's not change of mind, you've already opened the box and used the ipad, even just for few seconds. It's now second hand. I doubt anyone would accept it as brand new anymore.

    • You can try your luck, but the rule says must be unopened and seals intact:

(Scroll down to "1. Conditions applying to change of mind returns")

  • -2

Isn't there an iPad event happening soon? I'd hold off.

    • +2

Happened last night - hence the drop I'd assume. No 11th Generation was announced, just new Air and Pro still rumours the 11th Generation will still be coming later this year though. Unless I missed something

      • Oh my bad. Thanks for the info.

      • just new Air and Pro

the Air now has 13 inch version as well. so I thought you could basically get Air 13 inch with M2 for less than last gen iPad Pro 12.9 (6th gen) with M2 right?

128GB 6th gen iPad Pro is $1600 on sale https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774713

and new Air 128GB 13 inch is $1300 from apple.

I mean $1300 is still a lot for a tablet, but kind of a model change hack?
        https://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Apple-iPad-Air-13-…

        • I’m holding out to see what sort of discounts there will be on the now discontinued M2 IPP.
Even though the IPA now also has M2 SOC, it does not have the 120hz screen of the old IPP.

          • @entropysbane: yeah no 120hz but no biggie.
also no dual camera only single cam on IPA 13 inch.

a few other areas are blank in that comparison I linked but seems to be because those specs aren’t confirmed yet for IPA (such as battery size). so far not that much different that I care about.

  • +1

IMHO not worth it! 10th ipad is released on October 26, 2022 with A14chip (2020), can only use apple pencil 1 (2015!!). better off to buy Air which holds better value in future.

  • Is there a difference between the “ultra” retina of this model and the standard retina of the Gen9?

  • -1

is anyone can buy Apple Education Store?

    My kid go to kindergarten

  • I have iPad 6th gen, should I upgrade to 9th gen? Is there a big difference? Used by my son in school.

    • Is the apps your kid normally use lagging? If not, don't bother until there's a problem.

      • Not lagging really
