Why are people paying for anti virus? Microsoft security essentials is free and proven to be one of the best available in both being light on your system but also protecting you, from yourself!

      • +2

Microsoft security essentials is free and proven to be one of the best

It is now also proven one of the worse free antiviruses, if you read the comments below:
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91681#comment-1218108

It failed AV certification twice already and has the least zero-day malware and virus protection. Anything else other than MSE would be a better option now — that's how much Microsoft has failed.

        • +3

Yeah, getting sick of seeing the same banter on every AV or IS post!!!
It's peoples choice as to what program they want to run.
Let's just stick to what we're really here for… The BARGAIN!!!

        • not if it is junk security.

        • And is Bitdefnder junk?

  • +4

If you don't want the anti-virus..Scroll down to the related articles bit..enjoy.

  • 15:00 in Romania = 0:00 AEST?

    • edit: Most are are saying it starts midnight eastern daylight time, but if romania is +2, and Syd/Melb etc are +10 (daylight), then 3pm becomes 11pm Syd/Melb, 10pm Bris, 11:30 Adel, the rest can work out their times :)
I could very well be wrong…

      • yup, I was right. It has started now…

        • +1

Umm, no you weren't right. You said in the comment above that it starts at 11pm Sydney time which is incorrect. It's midnight Sydney now, and the promotion has just started. I correctly stated the times when I commented at 9PM yesterday (see my comment just below).

        • +1

sorry, my bad, I was working on +10 for Syd, not +11. I was right for my own timezone ;)

  • Tried other software on that website and not able to choose which language to install. Can only install Romania version?

  • +2

15:00-16:00 23 January in Romania corresponds to 00:00-01:00 24 January Sydney time (AEDT) — 27 hours from now AFAIK.

I just redeemed a free 1 year key for Internet Security 2013 from Westpac a few days ago, so I'm hoping I can extend the license by another year. :)

    • +1

Hi, did BitDefender send u the key? My registration was successful and it said the licence key will be sent to provided email, but few days passed and I still got nothing :(

      • +1

Yeah, likewise for the Mrs laptop!!! Still waiting from last Friday!
Thinking I should ring Westpac to see if they know what the deal is!

      • I actually signed up through Westpac some months ago, but only just got around to using they key I got. (The key works for 1 year from the date of activation, so you don't need to use it right away.) From memory, I got the key in an email from BitDefender pretty much immediately, so if you're still waiting it might be worth contacting Westpac about it! :)

  • +3

For those that have no clue about what's going on, you will be able to download a free 1 year license from the site between 15:00 and 16:00 on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of January Romanian time which is 00:00-01:00 24 January Sydney time (AEDT) as electronictomato stated above.

  • -3

You can download free AV from Microsoft all day, every day. Much better than any of these other scamware vendors IMHO.

    • +8

MSE has failed the latest AV test certification! http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Microsoft-Security-Essentia…
Depending on the day most of the top 5 AV software will alternate in strength (which is often why you see differences in the comparison tests) but at least they don't FAIL like MSE did!! I'd be changing if I was you. But yes, it was good last year, shame they let it slip.

    • +4

MSE has been rated very low on the latest AV tests. BD is rated as one of the best.

  • Thanks halfnhalf71! I hadn't seen that.

I'm still happy with my MSE for now as it isn't the system killer I've found the others to be, plus I have plenty of other protection - beginning with my brain.

I'd recommend anyone not in IT doesn't go with MSE at the moment based on these tests.

Here's the latest from AVTest. They've increased their detection rate, but they've still be scored a 1.5 on protection. I'm not sure I agree with that methodology as it sounds much worse than the detailed numbers show. They're catching 78% of zero-day against an industry average of 92%. That's up from a terrible 64% in October, but they're still given a 1.5 score. Strange.

Hi, it is my first contribution. If you are Westpac online banking customer, you are able to get it free for a year.

    http://www.westpac.com.au/security/bitdefender-lp/

    • +1

Apart from the initial free download trial period, have you been sent a license key from them for the full 1 year?

    • Then how do I download that with license key?

      • +1

        Not sure yet???
(like stnn posted above) Bitdefender said registration was successful and that the license or activation key would be emailed shortly! It's now 5 days on, and nothing!!!

    • Thanks for the contribution. I registered today.
      Will keep everyone posted.

  • Hi! good post , but pls mention in the title that the description is in Romanian language . It will be nice if you can put a short description how to do all this. Thanks.

  • +1

Riiiiiight - so you're going to download your anti-virus program from an unknown Romanian website offering it for "free"?!?!?
    Good luck with that.

    • Could not agree more. Admittedly Bitdefender is a Romanian company. Regardless, unless it's a case of downloading the software from the vendor (Bitdefender), and getting the key from this site, I'd be cautious of this deal.

    • It may be to us, but by the look of them, I don't think Yoda is un unknown site for Eastern block European people! And they're not the only ones to have offered a 1 year free subscription to Bitdefender!
It's a great way to all but 'lock you in' to their package as you have to sign up for automatic renewal!
PS. No one seems to have had an issue with Westpac offering it, or the Facebook offerings the other week!

      • Agreed, but you know who Westpac is… and while Eastern European people might know something about this Yoda site, I'm assuming most people on OzBargain don't… Anyway, good luck, but I'd still be exercising extra caution.

  • So the website is romanian but what language does it install the software in. Anyone?

    • Just a tip. Use Google Chrome web browser and it can automatically translate the romanian text to english to make it as like you've loaded an english web page. Quite handy that is.

I've got no idea which language the program installer is in though.

      • Yeah but that's the easy part.

Important part is which language the program is in :)

  • I can't figure out where is the download link/code. Can anyone help please?

  • @mgssolid: 23, 24 and 25 January, between 15:00 and 16:00 on yoda.ro. (UTC + 02:00)

    • I tried it today but could not find the link or code, please send me the link. I will try it tomorrow. Thanks

    • I don't get it. That's like 10PM Brisbane time 11PM Sydney time right?

      • it's only:

        2:10 PM
        Wednesday, January 23, 2013 (EET)
        Time in Romania

        • Ah right, so you would need to check around 11PM Brisbane/Midnight Sydney.

  • This is the link from the page https://www.facebook.com/wwwyodaro/app_195646697137509

Doesn't seem to be working at the moment though!

  • yeah not working either, clicking what i assume to be the 'submit' button doesn't load any new page.

  • doesnt work….

  • Doesn't work… maybe we need to enter a Romanian (I almost said Romulan) address and phone number… I dunno!

  • +8

Forget the form and Facebook — it's borked. Try here people: http://www.bitdefender.ro/media/html/yoda/ — this is the URL that you'll get redirected to if the form actually did work. The page says it's free for now - so enter your email address ;)

So far, no email has come through, but it's an actual BitDefender site, so fingers crossed.

    • +1

Awesome, thanks for the link — it'll save most of us the pain of having to put a in fake address in their FaceBook app but getting no response. No email here yet either, though, but hopefully I'll be able to extend my free Westpac subscription with this! :)

      • I'm thinking the delay is probably similar to what I've experienced with this before - iirc, Westpac's one took a long time to come through.

Guessing this will definitely go to spam if it comes through in Romanian…

        • Think I'll try this one tonight too!
I've already got the trial version via Westpac, but still waiting for an activation key!

    • hmm i still can't click on the download button, it does nothing for me.

      • didn't work for me in Chrome, but that has a heap of extensions loaded - like AdBlock.

Tried in Firefox which is clean and it worked.

        • Ditto. Just tried that as well, like you i'm also running adblock in chrome.

          Cheers!

      • It was working before (Chrome) - managed to put 3 emails through so far. Looks like it's just really slow now. If it works, it'll come up with some green text saying (in Romanian) that your key was sent via email and the installer will download. Unsure if I trust that installer, so once I have the code (if) then I'll get the official English installer.

  • .

  • I tried Canadian embassy address but it didnt work either.

  • has anyone got their key yet?

    • Not yet. Will wait and see come morning.

      • Mine came through 2 hours after signing up. Sweet!

    • Got my key just then.

    • mine just came thru - in the SPAM box mind you

  • +1

Just received my conformation email an hour after using the link mentioned above (http://www.bitdefender.ro/media/html/yoda/9). Serial code can be used with Bitdefender internet security 2013. Just a warning to people thinking of hoarding a few keys: they expire after 30 days if not activated.

    • If anyone decided to get extra activation keys, I'm open to a PM.
Still waiting on Westpac and saves me sitting up till midnight! ;)

  • FYI this key works on BD Windows 8 Security as well. It's just a rebranded Internet Security so I guess that's why.

  • I have tryed Westpac through my account early jan an still no key

    • Well, If you still want to run BD you should probabaly try this one!
I'm going to give it a shot tonight just for the key!!!

  • +1

I recently got this through Westpac. Like others I never got the email with the key after registering. I rang Westpac who gave me a number to ring for bitdefender and still nothing days later. So I lodged a complaint with Westpac and then the key arrived from bitdefender within 24 hours with an apology.

  • +1

Does anyone know if we can use more than one of these keys on the same computer to extend the subscription?

And for anyone wondering, this key stacks with the free Westpac one to give you 2 years all up.

    • Just to clarify… You've already done the Westpac key to give you 12 months free and now (not sure how) added the Yoda supplied key to extend it buy a further 12 months? And the expiry date is coming up past the 12 month (Jan 2014) mark?

      • +3

Yes. I used the Westpac key a few days ago which gave me a 365 day subscription. When you open Bitdefender, there's a clickable bit of text on the bottom that states how many days are left in your subscription — click it and a window will pop up which will allow you to add an additional key. Adding this Yoda key to the Westpac key on the same computer will add another 365 days — my Bitdefender now says it expires in 726 days. :)

        • Well then… It's a + from me!

        • Wish I could double + you… Yes, it works more than once!!!
But you need alternative email addresses! (not too hard!)

  • You can access the Romanian Bitdefender giveaway directly on the vendors site if you don't have a facebook account.

    http://www.bitdefender.ro/media/html/yoda/

  • Get the key from the link above, and then download the installer in English from http://download.bitdefender.com/windows/installer/en-au/bitd…

    Works perfectly!

  • I think the site is getting smashed atm…

    • Yeah, I got 1 code straight away for 1 computer.
Download button just isn't working now!!!

  • not working for me ATM - tried all 3 browser

    edit: working now

    • I clicked the Download button many times but it just brings up JavaScript:(void). Hmm….

  • YES!!! Using a second code works!!! I now have 730 days left!!!
edit: 1095 Days… But that's enough! think I'll get one for my old man!

    • how'd you add the second code?

      • +2

Go into MyBitdefender, click on the text at the bottom where it says "365 days left", enter the new key, and hit "Register now".

helps if I read all of the thread some times……. :P

        • That's cool… Enjoy years of free IS!!! :)
And the best thing is… McAfee runs out on the desktop in 42 days… So bye-bye!!!

        • now if only I could get a Westpac code :(

        • I still haven't got mine… BUT, sign up to another email address (Hotmail, Gmail, etc.) and do it again tomorrow night using your new temporary email!!!
Because I have a company website, I created a couple of additional emails there!
