Discounted Domestic Flights (Jetstar) - Visible through Expedia.co.jp

1250

I hope this is OK to edit, I thought it might be nice to summarise - If you see any errors let me know :)

And I want to include an update that the AUD is losing ground against the yen as well (as at lunch today its 1 to 100)
http://www.nasdaq.com/article/forex-audjpy-plummets-as-risk-…

Q. How and when did you find this deal?
A. Yesterday afternoon, being randomly curious about the high AUD vs JPY. I am as suprised as you are!

Q. Is is safe/legit?
A. I can only say make your own decision here, just like you should about the other international expedia sites.

Q. So where do I go?
A. www.expedia.co.jp top right next to the blue bird for english

Q. How should I pay?
A. Using a card like 28 degrees that does not charge conversion fees.
NOTE - there is a non-waivable credit card fee similar to what jetstar charges in Australia ie 650 JPY per sector/per person no options like POLI etc

Q. What type of fare is this?
A. Its a STARTER fare with no baggage. Strict rules apply. Information supports that adding baggage after you receive the booking is possible (confirmed) - although it may be slightly more (unconfirmed). Same with seat selection.

Q. Can I upgrade this to a flight that accrues FF points?
A. There is nothing to suggest this is possible, it seems unlikely.

Q. How can I tell what Yen is in Australian dollars?
A. go to google and type in X(the amount) JPY to AUD - Remember this is best case and could go up/down. It will also depend on your credit card provider about the rates you receive.

Q. How big is the difference?
A. It seems to vary from a very small difference to more than 50% - peak holiday times/short notice have the greater differences

Q. Anything Else?
A. There's some tips in the thread!

gizzard 7 hours 21 min ago
To help with viewing these fares in A$, go to the skyscanner.net site, use Change at the top to alter country to Japan. Then when page refreshes, go back to Change and alter to AUD. It will bring up Expedia.co.jp and show an approximation of the AUD prices.

And tips on putting in the right name format.

Q. So do you have a theory about the difference?
A. If I had to speculate it would be retailers keep their prices high when they know people will buy anyway (such as school hols) and discount at other times. Its possible the Japanese market is not driven by the same fluctuations.

  • Wow, its a Jetstar version of the expedia.com.br for Qantas.

I found SYD-OOL-SYD for $101 vs $188 on Jetstar site.

    • Yeah, can't find any discounts on international Qantas flights yet through expedia.co.jp

  • Good find. Is there any way to pay in AUD instead of using Yen?

    • +2

Get a 28 degrees mastercard, and this wont be a problem.

  • is it at all possible to add luggage to this process anywhere?

  • +8

yes to luggage, once booked log on to Jetstars website with your booking number and add it.

    • Are they the normal prices to add on baggage as per usual when you book through Jetstar's site? 20kg = $17, 25kg = $23, etc?

      • +1

from memory when I looked at my booking it was roughly 15kg $15 and yes something like $17 for 20kg

  • +1

Much love to the OP… thanks Ozbargain, just saved me $350 :)

    Yes can add luggage after

  • I found Perth to Melb in September for $218 each return. It's $350 return on Jetstar.

If only I had some spare leave this year!!

  • I wonder how long it will be till the AUS Government realise that by booking these O/S you are not paying the GST or are you? I doubt you would be.

    • +1

I have received a Jetstar tax invoice showing GST.. so i assume we have?

  • Any Expedia coupons around?

    GC-Cairns return $80 - nice work OP

    • What dates for $40 GC-Cairns flight?

      • +1

        Sept school holidays

        • What a difference a few days makes. Thanks.
Fri 20/9 is 1/2 price ($40 each way) of Wed 18/9 at the start of Qld school hols!
Even flights GC-Cairns tomorrow or next week for $40 each way.
(Cheapest I can find flying this week, returning in May is $200. The cheapest way I now - a QLD Pensioner slow rail fare is still a $25 fee from Brisbane to Cairns.)

  • Good price but I'm travelling on a certain date which is only $1 cheaper for me =(

  • might work for jetstar asia also. looked at a flight within asia, $70 on jetstar website, $60 via expedia.

  • +1

    @ Bruce - I'm getting $80 return for all Sept. 22/9 - 4/10
    BNE-HNL @ 50% would be nice.

    22/4 - 22/5 = $120 ret (+bags etc) Click on "show round trip flights"
Would be time to come home if you get there by train.

    • Cairns 31:15hrs by train each way from Brissie! 2:15hrs by plane from GC!!
(I just booked the train, but not yet pay - get it for $25 each way with free stops as a QLD Pensioner.)
Got free accommodation with a friend from USA on Magnetic Island. So train up on Thursday, stopping at Townsville for 2 weeks, then on to Cairns to fly back on a Sunday or Monday for total of $65 return. (Flying to Townsville would add about another $100.) Sweet! Thanks OP. Thanks MITM.

        Mag-nificent ! Enjoy
        Mission Beach- my fav.

        • Am in Mission now. Wonderful relaxed place. Good to be back.

  • +2

Am I correct in my currency conversion here? as I just checked flights return from Adelaide - Gold Coast 5 oct - 13 oct and they show up as 71500 yen which from the conversions I get is $699.51 return for 5 people. That is bloody cheap if its correct as im getting $1790.00 return for 5 people on the Jetstar website, that's a difference of $1090. Seems too good to be true.

    • I got similar, booked and verified via phone call to jairline. Cool.

  • Brisbane to Sydney for $140 return flying Jetstar over the Anzac day holiday period. Bargain!

  • Fantastic spot!!

I got Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Hobart on May 4 for less than $110 per person. One way there on Jetstar should be $148 - what a deal!!

  • omg this is such a great find, thanks heaps!

    • +1

Yeah - how do you guys find these offshore gems ?
Brazil, Ireland, Japan - where next ?

  • +12

Thanks all for the nice positives. I felt a bit bad I had not managed to find something post-worthy in quite some time!

Glad it was of use & Happy travels :O

  • Booked Sydney-Hobart return in Jun/Jul school holidays for $205 return for 1 adult, 1 child versus $395 on Expedia.com.au

Be interesting to see if this turns out to be a "pricing error" and gets canned, or whether it's a genuine marketing technique for Jetstar in Japan.

  • Booked Melbourne - Brisbane return Queens birthday long weekend $186, great find

  • +1

Thanks OP!!!!! I took the plunge and scored return flights for 5 to the gold coast from Adelaide for $758, score!!!

Same flights on the Jetstar website were $1790!

Spent another $50 on allocating seats for the clan, just got to decide on the baggage. Saved me just under a $1000!

  • Thanks, just saved me about $100-150! As long as they are legit when I get to the airport LOL….

  • +2

how are everyone avoiding the card fee?
    i can only choose between 650 Yen…

    • 28 degrees?

      • That only saves on currency conversion - Jetstar charges the 650Yen fee for using a card - the only choice.
A bit of an expense on a $40 flight.

        • Yeah I wasn't sure if that was what he meant…

        • yep, i meant the card fee. not the conversion rate.
i used citibank so it was okay rate.

  • Took the plunge with $500 4 tickets return September Brisbane - Melbourne.

    Thanks OP!

  • -8

Woah why did someone not post this 4 days ago???
Could've saved $200 on my Sydney holiday, damn OP!!!

    • +4

Because with such gratitude, they probably deliberately waited so you would miss out.

  • +1

It is possible, because expedia.co.jp operate in japan, so tax in japan and australia are different.

Got friend that got family in uk that bought the ticket for him for his travel between syd-uk, and much cheaper compare than if he bought the ticket from australia

    • +1

The reason for that is not tax but the way pricing is strucutured per country (geo-pricing). Tax is much higher where I come from but the same flight to Australia and back would cost almost half as it would when ordering from within Australia.

  • +1

Awesome! Just booked a family of 4 roundtrip Newcastle - Brisbane return over Anzac weekend for $275 incl credit card charges. Ozbargain is amazing. Thankyou. Now I'm off to book a trip to Melbourne :)

  • Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you convert the currency from Yen to AUD?
    Cheers.

    • +1

go on google, type in 6500 yen to aud

      • Thanks doremefaso :)
I guess I wondered if they had a currency conversion option on the website itself. I'll just use the currency converter on my desktop.
        thanks!

  • So does that web site regularly have prices cheaper than jetstar.com?
    Nice find!

  • Wow! This is a great find indeed. Im not looking to travel.
I had a reason to travel to QLD often. But not anymore :(

    Well done Nat

  • Can Qantas FF points be claimed on these Jetstar JP flights!

    • These are STARTER fares. The fare rules say no FF points accrued

  • Is there any way of changing a starter fare from this deal at extra cost to none that accrues QFF points?.

  • +1

To help with viewing these fares in A$, go to the skyscanner.net site, use Change at the top to alter country to Japan. Then when page refreshes, go back to Change and alter to AUD. It will bring up Expedia.co.jp and show an approximation of the AUD prices.

  • any idea do I put my first or last name in the family name, normally it would be surname but it comes up at the booking confirmation as

    Traveller 1. Jones Mike

    instead of Mike Jones??

    ideas?

  • i managed to get my name the wrong way round at the confirnatiin it had my surname around tge other way. anyone know if this is an issue given we will probably web check in so dont need to show id. will they need to fix it?

    • +1

i dont think they look at IDs for web check in, even at the airport they dont look at your ID. Unless you need checked luggage i guess.

But if you need to change the name, it will cost you $144. (I found out the hard way, last week)
They might waive since it was accident though, who knows.

    • +2

When you get the email from Jetstar it will have your name around the "right" way.

I booked with Surname first then Given name ie. Mr Jones Mike when Expedia did the booking and when the email from Jetstar came through it's booked under Mr Mike Jones.

Should be all good. I'm travelling this Saturday at $400 incl luggage for 2 return ADL-MEL vs $860 on the jetstar site for the same flights. Hopefully all ok!

Looking at making another booking for ADL - OOL in June as someone above said it's basically $70/person each way which is damn cheap

    • +1

spuddy can you check your booking with Jetstar and let us know?

      if thats ok :)

It looks like book Ms Julie (given) Smith (family)

Confirmation is in format Ms Smith Julie (reversed)

      But ticket is correct order

I think it has to do with the way people in Japan address each other by last name:
      http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2271.html

      • +2

I just rang them they sorted it out in 5 minutes , free of charge

        happy now :)

    • In Asian countries surname is placed before the first name (given name) so it's just a cultural display issue. Your last and first name will be stored separately in different fields in the system it won't be a problem when you check-in.

    • I did the same thing. I just talked with Jetstar via instant messenger and because it was within 24hrs of booking they changed the names to the right way around free of charge.

I got it wrong because I didn't read the form and automatically put our first names first, which then became our last names in the booking.

  • anyone has book in baggage and allocated seat? How much Jetstar charge for these? I wonder if the charges becomes more expensive after-booking than when the booking is madeat Jestar website?

    • +1

its alway more after-booking. you can check on jetstar's website, after you have inputted your flight details.
note, it shows JPY cause your ticket was bought in JPY.

    • +1

I bought a ticket for the Sunshine Coast for Queen's Birthday weekend, saved me $300 compared to Jetstar's own website quote. Anyway, Jetstar sent a booking confirmation email and that has a direct link to my booking where I can add on seats at JPY490 (cheaper than tiger) per seat, per leg.

Checked in luggage is given as JPY2100 for 15kg, JPY2400 for 20kg, JPY3750 for 25kg and JPY4500 for 30kg, per piece, per person, per leg.

P.S: Optional Travel Insurance is JPY2540 for the trip.

  • Can starter fares be changed into a points accrual fare?.

  • Are we all confident that the deal will be honoured?

    • +2

Yes, I spoke with Jetstar about my bookings today because I had the first name / last names reversed. They fixed the mistake and input my home address in Oz with no problems.

    • +3

      Yes

I flew Sydney to Bangkok return 3 weeks ago (got back on Friday).

After I booked via Expedia Brazil my Qantas frequent flyer logon showed my booking within 5 minutes…

I flew on the planes - no problem. Paid ~$540 return flying Qantas/Emirates - the "special" fare on Qantas.com.au and Flight Centre for exactly the same flights was $899….

      • +1

Excellent, thank you everyone! I'd already booked so really glad these were the answers ;)

  • +1

Though im not travelling, just check price using OP's method and jetstars website.

Traveling from - Melbourne to Gold coast and return
Dates: 24th April and return on 26th April.

Price as per jetstar website: A$ 516
    Price as per OP's method : 24,600 Yen = $244 approx.

This is saving of $272. Thanks OP for this deal..good one..

  • +1

Thanks OP. I have saved about $250 - $300 with one booking. Now I am looking to "save" more.

  • funny, it works to NZ as well.

just booked return ticket Bris to Auck for 5 people for $1250.

    awesome to the max.

  • +1

    Woah!

I guess you are off on an unexpected journey then :p (subtle joke ftw bru)

Tell us moar - I checked sydney to auckland but it looked fairly normal…

    • actually from Gold Coast to Auckland.
Bris to Auck is about $400+ return.
      GC to Auck $250 return

  • That's definitely cool

Thanks for checking back & posting more info :)

  • Thanks very much OP, booked the hubby on a cheap flight to Melb (he has a bucks to go to) so more money for activities lol :)

  • I booked yesterday and got the names reversed rang jetstar and they fixed in 5 mins but I only just noticed on the invoice it has my address as basically nothing . When I booked I can't actually remember seeing anywhere where it asked for your address. Is it no issue if they don't have an address? Even if they check ID they would only only look at the name correct? Anyone else notice this?

    • I have the same question actually. I didn't see anywhere to enter my address either, and noticed in the resulting booking confirmation from Jetstar, it listed a 'template' Japanese address. Not too sure if it matters though… maybe someone else here can enlighten us?

  • Great deal, just saved me hundreds of dollars!! Or caused me to spend $100's that I wasn't intending on spending… lol! Cheers OP

  • Just tried to see if there were any cheap Sydney -> Melbourne return flights for late May and although it lists Mix & Match, Qantas and Jetstar as airlines to use and non stop or 1 stop prices, it doesn't show any of the specific flights in the results area.

    Am I missing something?

  • +1

Update: Just went to skyscanner, changed the country to Japan, currency to Yen and did a domestic Australian airfare search. All the options came up in skyscanner (including the very cheap expedia price). Can click on expedia link within the flight summary and book that way.

Expedia.co.jp directly just wasn't working for me??

  • Works, saved $200, received offical Jetstar itinerary in mail within 5 mins. Great deal.

  • Does anybody know of any similar method for booking international flights? I know the fares are often cheaper when booking via Expedia.ie….

    • Do you mean Jetstar international or Qantas international?
Qantas international flights to SIN/BKK are cheapest on expedia.br. I haven't seen anywhere that does cheaper Jetstar international.

  • -2

Well its been closed down now as I thought it would ………..

    • +1

Really? I don't think so - appears to be still working fine to me….

  • +1

Just booked my flights back to Hobart from Sydney. Saved about $100. Still working today. Many thanks!

  • just booked melbourne to sydney, one way. a little bit more than half the price of jetstar website.
