Discounted Domestic Flights (Jetstar) - Visible through Expedia.co.jp

1250

I hope this is OK to edit, I thought it might be nice to summarise - If you see any errors let me know :)

And I want to include an update that the AUD is losing ground against the yen as well (as at lunch today its 1 to 100)
http://www.nasdaq.com/article/forex-audjpy-plummets-as-risk-…

Q. How and when did you find this deal?
A. Yesterday afternoon, being randomly curious about the high AUD vs JPY. I am as suprised as you are!

Q. Is is safe/legit?
A. I can only say make your own decision here, just like you should about the other international expedia sites.

Q. So where do I go?
A. www.expedia.co.jp top right next to the blue bird for english

Q. How should I pay?
A. Using a card like 28 degrees that does not charge conversion fees.
NOTE - there is a non-waivable credit card fee similar to what jetstar charges in Australia ie 650 JPY per sector/per person no options like POLI etc

Q. What type of fare is this?
A. Its a STARTER fare with no baggage. Strict rules apply. Information supports that adding baggage after you receive the booking is possible (confirmed) - although it may be slightly more (unconfirmed). Same with seat selection.

Q. Can I upgrade this to a flight that accrues FF points?
A. There is nothing to suggest this is possible, it seems unlikely.

Q. How can I tell what Yen is in Australian dollars?
A. go to google and type in X(the amount) JPY to AUD - Remember this is best case and could go up/down. It will also depend on your credit card provider about the rates you receive.

Q. How big is the difference?
A. It seems to vary from a very small difference to more than 50% - peak holiday times/short notice have the greater differences

Q. Anything Else?
A. There's some tips in the thread!

To help with viewing these fares in A$, go to the skyscanner.net site, use Change at the top to alter country to Japan. Then when page refreshes, go back to Change and alter to AUD. It will bring up Expedia.co.jp and show an approximation of the AUD prices.

And tips on putting in the right name format.

Q. So do you have a theory about the difference?
A. If I had to speculate it would be retailers keep their prices high when they know people will buy anyway (such as school hols) and discount at other times. Its possible the Japanese market is not driven by the same fluctuations.

  • still working for me, but the card surcharge has jumped to Y 1,300?

  • thanks OP! i was sad because i missed out on $20 return sydney to melbourne for oaks day :( $80 return all up isn't bad, i don't think i will do better!

  • Return from Newcastle to Brisbane for 2 ppl with 3 nights accomodation is $200+ more when booked on expedia au than expedia jp in middle of September nsw school holidays.

    Thanks OP!

  • how much is additional luggage though expediajapan?

Do not believe the scare mongers who say your flights might be cancelled. That is complete BS.

I've already come back from a very cheap trip to Bangkok thanks to expedia.br

I wonder if the scare mongers work for Aussie travel agencies….

Brilliant.. just scored 4 tickets return from Adelaide to goldcoast with 20kg extra luggage and saved $900.
    Thanks OP.

    • Lukeloop, I know this is one month old but I am looking for flights to Goldcoast as well and just wondering how you did this.. As I have tried the same but to Brisbane for 4 but getting some crazy expensive prices… Just wondering what I am doing wrong… Cheers. Sam.

The link should still be good, yes even after 5 weeks. But you do need to be confident with booking through an international expedia site.

Read the hints at the top & all the comments from people and you should get all the info you need.

Which dates are you looking at, I cnan check for you if you like?

        • Thanks for your reply. Ok I got the flights I want works out to be 33000 yen aud$330..with jetstar.

So cheap about half price.. Now am I right i have to pay with a 28degrees card? I don't have one of these cards and it takes ten days to arrive. Is there another way I can pay for this? I don't mind paying some fees. I do have a bank account that allows overseas payments.

Also to add luggage I just have to use the booking reference number and add it via the Jetstar website.

Are you all confident that this will all be ok and legit?
Last one I heard jetstar are horrible, never flown with them.. Should I be concerned?

Edit: I went to the site sky scanner.net - just wondering why wouldn't we book from there as the price is similar to Expedia?
          Any difference?

          Cheers.

          Sam.

Sam you may want to post this is in the travel part of the forum if you want detailed advice, as it's will be seen better.

You should be able to use any credit card to pay the fare, but it's an overseas transaction depending on the bank that will attract fees. Some like the 28 degrees card have no fees, and use a good exchange rate. Others you could pay around 5% extra. You will have to check your own card to see the fees.

Re luggage I can only point to others who have added baggage afterwards with no dramas.

Re jetstar itself and whether the deal is legitimate, I can't make that decision for you. Some don't mind jetstar other won't fly it. Some like me will because the price is right. IMHO though all airlines have problems, it's just a case of how often. Mind you I would probably not fly Tiger.

Like any deal here it's a case of making your own judgement. But I hope this info helps.

  • expedia.com.au vs expredia.co.jp

$1320 vs $612, hence 53% cheaper on the same flights same airline etc. Also that $612 includes the price using a visa and all charges. You do get a tax invoice and an immediate confirmation from your airline.

One thing to consider is to make an account so you can edit the address otherwise you will need to contact the airline and change the default address.

    • Lukeloop, do you really need to edit the address with Jetstar? ie. does it matter if it stays as the generic Japanese template address? I am worried about contacting Jetstar in case they try to cancel my ticket or whatever…

No you dont need to, you can always do this online, by accessing you booking record via the Jetstar site.

Last year I traveled to the US, on Qantas with cheap tickets from Expedia in Ireland, no issues, no comments no different service, so these tricks would be well known to Jetstar/Qantas and they havent done anything about it.

The issue they would also face is dealing with Expedia as one of their retailers, if they tried to pull the plug on these fares. The only way would be is for them to require Expedia to limit sales to a country or change the fares they charge via Expedia JP, but that would only be on tickets to be sold.

In your case the horse has already bolted…. enjoy the ride :)

      • I just rang them and told them, they don't care. I also booked my seats so the family could sit together. All is fine.

      • I can't remember the last time a domestic flight booking needed your address attached. If you self check-in or check-in online then the first JQ staff you will talk to is at the gate.

Our family returned home last night after a long weekend on the Gold Coast. There were no problems using the tickets purchased via this awesome Ozbargain post. Thanks Natt!

    • Thanks feezfun for checking back - was nice of you :). Also good for others to know & I hope the weather was kind!

      • Also - thanks - went to Darwin last weekend. ~$250 cheaper than Jetstar.

        Thanks :)

        • yeah - that's awesome :)

I am just glad it's more $ for the ozbargainers

  • would have saved $60 (HBA-OOL-HBA) if I had remembered seeing this thread 2 weeks ago, last night..Oldtimers disease.

  • Confirmed SYD-MEL-SYD on Anzac day weekend worked great. Booked previous Sunday @ $350 for two people on expedia.co.jp vs. $700+ on jetstar.com.

Got another of these happening Jun 21 for $102 return and don't expect any issues. Even chatted to jetstar.com online agent to have my firstname and lastname fixed (they were reversed in the original booking).

Hope this keeps up as will allow my family to visit each other more often due to the substantially lower airfare cost.

    • Do you think there would be any issues with changes to Qantas international flights after booking through expedia.co.jp? ie. call centre checks on source of booking before making any changes and could potentially open a can of worms.

      • +1

Shouldn't be as when I chatted with Jetstar they had no concern about where I booked the fare. I think they mainly look to see it's a valid booking and then standard fees for changes. I would think that's how most customer service centres operate.

    • Re: your name being reversed, is this a regular thing with Expedia.co.jp? Do you recommend filling in details in a particular way to avoid this?

  • i checked mel-adelaide. save up around 100 aud for return in mid june

too bad not some cant get good timing

    • I wanna book a return flight for mid june.. MEL-ADL.. and reverse for a relative visiting me.. will get stung 3% (Westpac.. need to get the 28DEG card) and maybe shoddy exchange but should still be nice savings if it works..

  • Great deal - i used it to book a last min ticket to syd for a funeral. $150 vs $300 on jetstar site!
