Does the phone need to be working?

    • +13

play dumb and say it's because it doesn't have 3g, it doesn't turn on.

    • +1

The terms & conditions did not mention the condition requirement of the 3G phone, so I cannot answer that question. Here are the general T&Cs for a normal trade-in with Asurion but the document does not seem relevant to this offer.

Does the phone need to be working?

I would be doing a factory reset if possible

      • +14

it's an old Telstra lite 3g prepaid phone i found whilst dumpster diving behind coles. Still turns on

    • +1

      Need this one answered

    • no

    • Bit late but yes in my experience, at my store they pulled up the "recommended actions" part on their webpage stating the device must not be broken and in working order.

  • what does * ^ means in the email?

    • Already copied into the deal description:

      *Recycling of device is…
      ^Offer ends…

      • +1

beautiful, i had telstra cruise 3g sitting in the self.

i will try this next week to exchange.

        thanks

  • +3

Does it need to go kn a Gerry Harvey $100/month plan contract for 3 years?

    • +3

Yes like to see the catch. There has to be one.

      • +13

The catch is the phone comes with a Harvey Norman's warranty.

        • +1

Ok so that’s a warranty that actually you have to buy? As in the phone is free but the associated warranty is not?

          • +1

            @BargainBenno: .

I was saying you deal with the shit show that is Harvey Norman's warranty.

Also anything you purchase in Australia comes with warranty; except private sales.

        • +2

Worse still, they sign you up for an extended two years warranty that will cost you $99.

      • +50

The catch is you need to actually go to HN

        • +3

and do a line dance in front of the HN staff to get this cheapo $35 dollar phone
all recipients will be announced in the intercom "Mr or Ms so and so just picked up a free Nokia 4G phone for free because they need one and HN has a kind heart''

      • +7

I'd say that part of the way they are making money is probably using government grants e.g. NT Recycling Grant - I'm in NT so was aware of this one, there's probably others in other states…

That combined with getting customers into stores, marketing for Nokia, and likely some other scheme I haven't thought of… thoughts?

  • +3

Do I need to make a purchase of a sim or similar? I can’t see the terms and conditions.

    • +6

No, but you do need to deal with HN, which is probably the biggest deterrent.

  • +4

Time to upgrade my backup phone which I got years ago

    • does it still work???

      • +1

Yes, I still use to activate sim card before converting to esim

    • +1

The old Lumia phone 🤣 as slow as one of these beauties https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/wbna18…

      • +1

they weren't slow at all from memory, had a RTOS (real time operating system) didn't it?

        • +3

          N95 was a beast.

    • +1

Clicked that link expecting to see the Huawei Y201

  • +3

Do these bad boys still got them polyphonic bangers like celestine? The only thing im more nostalgic for ringtone wise is crazy frog, and the default Sony Ericsson ringtone like I’m a character in a super late 90s /early 00’s TVB drama

    • +8

The 3g Sony Walkman w910i have is a relic. Not sure if I want to part with it tbh. It even has Walkman on the front. It’s still working well but 3g reception is pretty much non existent now.

      • +5

All the coolest Taiwanese kids had 3G Sony Walkmans back in the day in high school with post paid contracts and blazing fast 3G internet

Me: damn hey must be nice …

        • Might hold on to it. I have an iPhone SE that’s water damaged but that’s a 4g phone unfortunately.

      • +2

I think that's the point of the promotion, they are totally shutting down 3G

      • +1

I'm definitely holding on to my w910i just for nostalgia reasons

  • +1

My in law still using my old iPhone 3GS !!! Battery still last almost a day although he never getting calls or even use the phone, just has it as standby emergency, time to go swap him a new 4G phone then.

    • +8

It will work fine with wifi, i wouldn’t trade a 3gs in

    • +6

Would rather have an iPhone that can't make calls than a Nokia 110.

  • +7

Pair it with a $1 lebara sim and $5 activation to run a burner for a whole year for only $6

    • But then you’d have to be dealing to make the burner worthwhile.

  • +3

There has to be a catch.

    • +27

      The froghurt is cursed

    • +8

They're banking on old people coming in for the free phone then up selling them to a more expensive phone on a plan with extended warranty and anti-virus subscription. Might even sting them for an expensive surge protector/power filter as well.

      • There are aware ozbargain exist. Ozbargainers would sweep all the stock before oldies could step inside the store.

      • +8

You forgot the $100000 monster super mega ultra high quality hdmi cable made of pure gold

        • +1

.. or an optical cable that has "gold plated contacts". Plenty of those around too.

  • +6

    What if it’s a 4G phone

    • +2

I'm not sure why this is negged.
      It's a fair question, image doesn't say "a 3G max capability phone".

    • +4

Awaiting the trade in 4G phone for 5G phone.

    • -1

It's a 4g phone going by the website

  • +2

Got an iPhone 4 gathering dust around can I use recycle that get the Nokia?

    • +43

What a timeline we're in, when an Apple gets swapped for a Nokia.

      • +8

        What comes around, goes around.

      • +4

I gotta tell you - this timeline's not so hot.

        • I totally agree

        • +6

Give it a few more years, it’s getting warmer

    • +1

Easier to dust off the old phone, since this will probably just gather dust as well.

      • +2

Yep, upgrade path in 6 years time we trade in the Nokia 110 4G for a free Motorola 5G

  • I have Nokia N70 music edition I guess I bought it back in 2007 … missing a battery.. can I exchange it for new Nokia at HN?

    • +8

I guess it's luck of the draw really, either you get a fun cool young person who doesn't care and does the deal, or you get a Harvey Norman Karen who doesn't even know this promo exists and barks you out of the store. The odds are about 20:1.

    • +2

I also have the N70 ME and with the battery bought in 2007 with my first salary.

    • Is it in good condition and working if it had a battery?

  • +6

Are two 2G phones equivalent to a 4G or 3G phone? Asking for a friend.

    • +4

I have one. You can claim 6G

      • +2

Now we're talking. Getting ahead of the pack.

    • 2g. Now that’s antique!

      • +1

        I have Nokia E71

        • I have one of those and would rather hold onto it for nostalgia!

      • I still have my Nokia 100 Analog. 2G GSM wise I’m not sure I’ve got anything. Have my CDMA StarTac. Oh wait I have my Ericsson R320s.
        Might swap a Samsung BlackJack

  • Great

Is there a web link to this deal?

    • The web link has been embedded in the Go to Deal button. It simply goes to HN's store locator as far as I can see. Here it is expanded out just for you.

       https://stores.harveynorman.com.au/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=HNAU-15470_Recycle-Old-3G_04052024%20(1)&spMailingID=8629037&spUserID=NDU4NzI0Mjg3MjES1&spJobID=2200034994&spReportId=MjIwMDAzNDk5NAS2&dclid=COCh6fvl84UDFSbaPAIdJ1YPMA

There is a View Email Online link, but my personal email is embedded, so I will not copy the link here.

        • +1

How did you come to that conclusion?

          • -3

@alvian: Not available on Harvey Norman website.

            • +1

@xxxozbargain: The email does not appear to be targeted. One only needs to sign up to HN junk mail to receive it.

              From [email protected]

This email has been sent by Generic Publications Pty Ltd ABN 35 104 215 241 (Generic Publications). • That’s incorrect. The view online link is their advertising email system. I have received this same email too because I’m signed up to their email newsletter system, just like how JB sends out their weekly catalogue promotions

            • +1

@xxxozbargain: I would suggest you re-read Alvian’s quoted comment above before you jump into any conclusions. And I’d also suggest you read my comment again as it’s like a marketing email. Email also doesn’t state any sentence like “this email offer is just for you” etc

                • +2

@xxxozbargain: Did you see what was also written on Alvian’s deal description?

                  Graphics from email

He has provided enough evidence to show that this deal isn’t a targeted deal

                  • +7

@BargainsGrabber: I found a generic copy of the email posted on a third-party website and cannot see anything suggesting it is targeted to anyone in particular.

                    • @WookieMonster: Exactly. Even that website states

Harvey Norman sent this email to their subscribers on May 4, 2024.

I’m not wasting more time explaining it to xxxozbargain
Some of us have signed up to the marketing emails so that we know what are on specials and that doesn’t mean everything they sent is a targeted email

                        • @xxxozbargain: Did you even click on the image that OP uploaded?

That’s sufficient imo, since there isn’t any unique barcodes or anything…

                          • -7

@BargainsGrabber: Of course i saw it. It does not contain sufficient details for me to go to the store to claim it. For example there is no validity date specified. Unclaimable by the general public unless you received the targeted email.

Maybe in future they may publish the deal for the general public on their website.

              • +2

@BargainsGrabber: you can lead a horse to water…
