  • Finally lucky i didnt buy at 72/73
Hopeless not cheaper during prime day next month

Lucky indeed. You saved $5. Don’t spend it all at once.

      • Long time go, that 5 equal to 10 soft serve cone at mcd. Ten!!!!

        • And before that it was nearly 17 :) They used to advertise "still only 30c"…. Sigh.

  • Uber delivery is for uber one only?
Edit. Changed address to my office and I got free 2hr delivery lol….

Microsoft Shopping addon popped up a window saying was available at Bunnings for $72.99, so that's probably what they are Price-Beating.

Looks like a good unit though, I was tempted enough to order 3.
For anyone ordering multiple units on the same order, clicking the pricebeat, then adding extra units in cart only added the pricebeat discount on the first unit for me. I solved this by going back to the item page and adding to cart one at a time with pricebeat button. Brought the price for 3 units to $201, was showing $267 the first time I tried.

I have one, battery life isn't spectacular depending how often it's triggered, the added solar panel should fix that. Ideally you wouldn't want it fully charged all the time though so might need to unplug the panel once fully charged, bit of a pita. Don't think you can tell the device not to charge from the app, would be nice if possible.

    • How long is not spectacular in your situation? A month? And if unplugging then can the app tell us if the battery low?

      • In a low detection area it will last for months yes but if triggered 15 times a day and if you view it a lot, probably flat in less than 2 weeks. It really does come down to activations.

Yes you will get notifications via the app of low battery and if the battery is draining too fast. Cam can record to SD, H200 hub or cloud. Can set up detection zones and types as well to limit activations. One of mine goes nuts due to tree shadows so I've limited it to person detection only and reduced detection zones.

        • Thanks. I will limit the time as well to detect at night. Alao during day detect dog only if possible lol

        • Are you sure it can record to H200 hub? I can connect my H200 to the C410, but I can't view anything via the hub. And also, for some reason it would take me forever to connect direct to the C410. Once I disconnect the camera away from the hub, I can login to the camera nearly straight away.. I find connecting to the H200 doesn't do anything.

          • @Lone star: I think the C410 needs a newer firmware than it shipped with to play nice with the H200, mine didn't work at first (bought 2nd hand with old firmware) but worked after I updated it. Also max of 4 cams on the H200 as well, but it should alert you if you try to connect more.

          • @Lone star: I had c410 connecting to the hub.. it works great . You don't have to record into the camera sdcard

surely the unit should run and be reliable with the solar panel plugged in, all the time ?
Is your reason for suggesting unplug the solar panel to not cause the battery to degrade sooner?

      • +3

Yes, lithium batts don't like full soc all the time and I doubt TP-Link have done anything to mitigate that.

        • +2

Yes same as mobole phone now samsung has feature to stop charging at 80pct. No tplink actually wants the battery to die faster so people buy again haha

          • @McMaferMur: I asked copilot and it says they have battery protection to prevent overcharging and to only charge once below a certain point but I have panels on some C425 and they will sit at 100% unless I do something to stop them maintaining full soc. Copilot also likes to make stuff up so could be hogwash.

            • +8

              @foobar:

              I asked copilot

@Exprise: Uhh pretty sure you just agreed with me?

Edit: Lol, they said stop using AI as it gives bad results (something I acknowledge and pointed out) and that "we're" discussing (having had no previous input themselves) how lithium batteries degrade when kept at 100% etc, nothing they said disagreed with anything I stated yet their response was a tad hostile toward me, no wonder they removed it

        • switch 2 have 90% protection

Unplugging/plugging the cable is pointless and defeats the purpose of having solar. The solar panel generates around 4w max in full summer sun.

Being exposed to 60+degrees in the summer sun does more damage to the batteries than trickle charging at 100%. Just set it to detect everything all the time to keep using the battery if you are that worried about keeping it below 100%

Plug the USBC into your phone and see how long it takes to charge as a test - phone will likely say "charging slowly, please check your cable"

I've got 2 of these plus 4 eBay panels for my eufy cams. During winter they don't get enough sun to charge. You may have to plug in a powerbank to get it back to 100% if its in a high detection area.

        • I have cheap panels on my C425 cameras and they will charge back up to 100%, the number of days varies based on how low I let them get but they sit at 100 unless I intervene, even in winter. I've just altered one this morning so it will charge again.

Believe me I'd rather not touch them but I also don't want to find out the cost of replacing the batteries too soon either.

          • @foobar: what is the size of the battery? 5000mha? c410 and c425

            • -1

              @jjj123: IIRC 6000 in 410 and 10000 in 425, I'm sure the answer is only a google search away…

          • @foobar: I've had ebay solar panels connected to my 4 x Eufy 2C Pro for 2 years and all 4 cam max capacity is now 91%. I can live with ~5% loss a year to save time and effort watching the battery level and unplugging and plugging.

    • What kind of time period are you concerned about battery degradation over?

I've got a cheap Chinese solar security camera (TMEZON) that has been running 24/7 with the panel plugged in for a couple of years now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I never even thought about it.

      • Li-ion battery degradation isn't always immediately apparent, capacity loss will occur without voltage loss, bloating yet battery continues to seemingly work fine until the fireworks event. Mistreating them often won't produce issues until it inevitably does. Impossible to know what's happening inside unless the case starts cracking open so treating them properly from the start should ensure they don't go into thermal runaway. Cheap batteries in bikes and scooters is a good example, might charge hundreds of times perfectly fine, then one day or night…

        • -1

Thanks, I guess I won't be as surprised if this happens then! Now just to wait for the next fire extinguisher deal..

    • -2

The people who unplug their security camera solar panel regularly to prevent over charging are the same people who plastic wrap their sofa and carpets to prevent wear and tear.

  • This doesn't allow for continuous recording does it?

    • No, motion activated. You can set detection sensitivity and clip length and time between clips so very configurable.

      • how long is the post motion recording? 10s or 30s?

does this store to SD card, no need for a hub?

    • -4

Never understood why ppl look for continuous recording.

      • +3

Depends what the purpose of your cameras is. I have a NVR Reolink setup with 4K cameras recording continuously and there are moments where being able to see what leads up to and occurs after an event is essential, the motion activated cameras just can't do that. I've got my tapo cams in areas where I'm not expecting movement and don't need 24/7 recording. For many people I'm sure motion activated battery powered cameras are fine, just place them so they aren't easily stolen :)

        • -3

That's exactly what per-recording is all about. Set it for 30 second to a minute, increase camera motion sensitivity, decrease size of motion detection object. PPL tend to invent & solve the problems that have been solved long time ago. There is no need for continuous recording in most cases.

          • @vovka: They typically don't activate quickly enough even at max sensitivity, which for many cases is probably fine but eventually you'll have something occur where you wish you had far more footage. I've needed my reolink footage several times and I know for sure my tapo footage wouldn't have provided much needed details. Most of these battery cameras are 2K which falls short, I wouldn't have caught my plant and flower thieves with 2K cameras :)

            • -1

@foobar: "They typically don't activate quickly enough even at max sensitivity"
Set it up so they can or get a system that does. Cameras can detect and record flies if configured properly.

        • What Reolink cameras are they? I'm currently researching security cameras and confused between Reolink / Eufy.
I'm checking if there is a really easy way to compare different models within Reolink or Eufy websites.

          • @here for deals: Reolink's website has the ability to compare cameras, but the most comprehensive way is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/z6caqk/reolink_…

Reolink's product range is primarily focused on wired cameras, but they do have a smattering of wireless cameras available - including one model that is battery powered, has a solar panel, and is allegedly capable of 24/7 recording when connected to their Home Hub.

Eufy only makes wireless cameras, as far as I know. They offer several different models, but the good ones tend to be quite expensive.

            • @klaw81: Thanks for the reddit link. I will visit that reddit to research Reolink cameras and see if there is a similar reddit for Eufy stuff.

Eufy only makes wireless cameras, as far as I know.

I'm sure they have POE cameras that connect to something called a Home Base. I think Home Base will power these POE cameras via ethernet Cat6 cable.

              • @here for deals:

I'm sure they have POE cameras that connect to something called a Home Base.

You're right, they do make PoE cameras, WiFi cameras with external power, and wired NVRs now.

The HomeBase is a NVR designed to be used with WiFi cameras - it contains a mechanical hard drive where the footage is stored, and creates a special WiFi network that the cameras connect to.

          • @here for deals: My NVR came with 810A bullet cams but there are domes which are pretty much the same, I also have one 811A and a 823S2 which I'm yet to set up. Had 4K since 2021 and a 720p reolink for years before that, zero issues with either. The trackmix cams were on sale recently, haven't tried one but apparently they're decent.

      • Well, same, never got why people would care until I spoke to my neighbour the other day. They broke into his car, and the police came over looking for where the guy might have walked. Mine would have picked him up, but it didn't trigger the motion detection because he was far away. Ideally, I want to record and keep motion detection for however long and continuous recording for about 2 weeks (ideally a bit longer, but I'm happy with that).

        • If you could set this cam to continuous record, it'd probably not last even a day. If you set it to high sensitivity and long clip lengths, it might also trigger too often and drain the battery quickly even with the panel. They are very good and I do recommend it - for the right purpose. If you want to capture everything though, this is far from ideal.

      • +1

        Two main reasons:

        1. Cameras with batteries usually idle in a low power state, and often take a few seconds to start recording once they are triggered. This means the recordings only begin after the action starts, which means you will sometimes miss crucial context for the event.

        2. Camera recording triggers (motion, car detection etc) aren't 100% reliable, and sometimes they don't record at all. Which means you miss recordings altogether, defeating the purpose of having a camera entirely.

Cameras that record 24/7 don't have either of these issues. You then have a grace period of a week or so to retrieve any relevant footage before it's over-written by new footage.

        • "Camera recording triggers (motion, car detection etc) aren't 100% reliable, and sometimes they don't record at all"
Then stop buying garbage systems that cannot do what they're designed to do.

          • @vovka: Triggers aren't magic - they work on certain criteria. Those criteria are tuned to prevent lots of false positives (triggering when the wind blows a leaf past, or shadows moving) but it's difficult to get the balance perfect to only detect things you're interested in recording.

In any case, your solution is pretty much correct. Get a proper wired system that can record 24/7, and isn't constrained by power budgets. Cheap wifi/battery systems are mostly e-waste.

            • -2

@klaw81: false positives is still better than continuous recording

              • +1

@vovka: No, that's not possible. At very best, lots of false positives can only ever be equal to continuous recording.

                • @klaw81: That guy got a stick up his ass today over security cameras, so much so he made an objectively false statement lol

        • +1

Agree 100%, my tapo cameras supplement my 24/7 system perfectly but by no means could I ever rely on them alone. Perfect for certain situations and likely all some people will ever need, but you can't beat a 24/7 system. Waking up and late recording start is most definitely the biggest issue, then resolution and bitrate (compared to a 24/7 system).

Police have requested footage from me a few times, I helped someone who was hit by a car prove it wasn't their fault, a neighbour who got their house broken into got a number plate from me and I was able to identify people stealing plants from me. Have also used the footage to figure out what some unusual noises were over the years.

      • +2

        From my understanding,
Battery Cameras use a PIR sensor to detect motion,
The PIR will then wake up the camera to start recording.
So you usually miss the first 1-2 seconds of motion especially if the motion started within the camera frame. If the PIR picked up motion before it entered the camera frame then you may get all of it on the clip.
The PIRs are not sensitive enough and will miss small animals like a possum or cat.

While cameras that are powered will use the camera itself to detect motion. So essentially, they are continuously recording and only save a clip when they detect motion. Using the camera to detect motion makes them more sensitive.
I also found that my old Kasa USB powered camera will save the clip from 1-2 second before the motion started, which is great.
This does pick up the possum that walks by.

        • Agree the sendle guy that pick up my package know where i put them he will go run inside my camera detection and out in split second thr camera not even record anything

  • Saw 20% good guys picture on shopback yesterday. But can't see the deal anywhere.

    • I think that is because it started and ended yesterday. I saw the banner too, it was one of their daily upsized rates.

  • On a serious note though, how good are these for getting number plates etc? Mounted on top floor of a double storey

    • +1

I have eufy 2k cams mounted at 2 storey pointed at my drive way and carport and cannot make out number plates clearly most of the time. The ones at ground level are fine though.

    • +1

not - the high mount means the angle is terrible for reading plate

by the time the vehicle is at a better view angle, the res is too low

could mount them lower….. but theft/vandal issue (the mount is not designed to be tamperproof)

EDIT: these also work better for movement across the FOV - movement towards the camera is less reliably picked up by the time the camera wakes from sleep.

    • +1

Zero chance with high angle + 3MP camera with wide angle lens.

  • -1

Are these compatible with home hub?

    • +1

H200 yes, it supports up to 4 cams and will record to the card in the hub rather than a card in the camera.

  • $6 delivery. pickup 14km. wait for Amazon

    • Seems to be out of stock on Amazon though

      • Yes, missed 72(.99?) deal yesterday.

  • someone bought them all in sydney

  • I just received a $30 discount code for spending over $100 at TGG in store..

    • Request the price beat in store, buy two, apply code and these work out to $52 each.

    • By email or SMS?

      • +1

SMS, you'll definitely receive it soon, both of my accounts got it.

  • Damn, paid $72 last night from JB!

  • how long is the post motion recording? 10s or 30s?

does this store to SD card, no need for a hub?

    • Post motion capture is configurable (3 - 10 seconds) as is retrigger delay (0 - 60 seconds). Clip length is configurable 20 - 120 seconds.

Can record locally to an SD card, no need for the hub. Recordings can be viewed and downloaded via the app. I would recommend a hub though, if someone steals the camera then the evidence of the theft is gone. Note a H200 is needed if you do go with a hub.

      • +1

        Yes,
Given how easy these are to remove, local storage really does
not make sense especially if the camera is within easy reach.

        • It's fine if the camera is inside and frees up a spot on the hub (if you have one) but if it's in a position where it can be taken, most definitely record to a hub or the cloud. Tapo is good in that you have 2 non-cloud non-subscription recording options, far more than most others offer. From what I've seen some cloud recording subscriptions are insanely expensive making the hub far more appealing.

  • what is the size of the battery? 5000mha?

  • What are the higher budget alternatives in this category?

    • Eufy's wifi/solar cameras are probably the most popular "premium" option in this category, but they're very expensive. Reolink also have some wifi/battery cameras that are very good.

The main attraction of the two companies above is that they prioritize local storage and privacy in a way many of the other providers (Ring, Wyse etc) don't.

  • I assume I can't use this with an existing Frigate NVR setup? I'd rather not send my video feed to TP-Link.

Also, the manuals on their website send back a 404. Maybe that's their "Smart person detection" in action.

    • I assume I can't use this with an existing Frigate NVR setup?

I doubt it. Battery powered cameras rarely play nicely with NVRs - they can't maintain a network connection without draining the battery.

I'd rather not send my video feed to TP-Link.

In theory you can run them in local storage mode (ie SD card). But I'm not sure if the camera will continue to function if it's isolated from internet connectivity via VLAN.

  • PriceBeat button brings it down to $67 not sure who they are matching JB has it for $72

Probably a price beat on that JB price?

Bought this a few weeks on Amazon at $93 thinking it was a decent price, and then proceeded to watch the price plummet… Oh well. Happy with the product, so it's all good. Would get another if I can think of a good location for it.

    • Good to hear it’s a good product, soo happy I bought 3 for $57 each lol stacked with the $30 off code they txted out this morning.

      • Lol, way to make the poor guy feel better about his $93 purchase.

        • +1

You win some, you lose some (though mostly lose in my case).

  • Thinking to install one on a private pole, using this mount: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CW3BD9XB

Ideally an Eufy one, but this one is cheap enough to be close to the footpath.

Wondering if passing walkers would be annoyed.

  • Alright so the good guys I went to sold out but you are able to back order them in. Also I managed to stack my $30 off code they txted me this morning. Bought 3 for $171 or $57 each. Absolute bargain especially if you stack the $30 off code. The back order will come in about 5 days so happy to wait and collect.

    • Yeah dont worry this will not sold out, just delay

    • How’d you get the code?

      • I think if your an existing goodguys customer (you have a goodguys account you login to on the website) they sent it out via txt message. Not sure if you sign up now youll get it.

    • Can I do a back order online or in store only!

  • damn it, bought it last week for $73

I read that Tapo charges you for enabling AI features, if that is the case then Eufy being more expensive upfront makes more sense. What is your experience? I am looking into replacing both ring and Arlo, sick of subscription.

    • +2

Just get tapo and plug in a micro sd card. I have multiple of their products never had to pay a subscription as long as you use local storage.

      • -1

I am tossing up between Eufy and Tapo right now, I know Eufy is a bit more expensive but is it worth it?

        • Eufy sucks.

It requires you to connect to their homebase. The range between the camera and homebase is atrocious.

    • +1

Definitely not, all the AI detection and little blue boxes around detections work perfectly fine with either the camera standalone or when connected to a hub.

You can also get a cloud subscription if you choose, tapo care as they call it gives you cloud storage for up to 30 days recording history, rich notifications with snapshots, smart sort and video sharing which are cloud only options.

      • -1

        rich notifications with snapshots

I guess that is what people have been referring to that you can only get the advance notification with cloud subscription.

        • +1

You still get notifications from the app for every detection unless you've told it not to as it's reasonably configurable, just no attached image of what it's seen which is the rich side of it. Notifications come thick and fast without the cloud until you fine tune things.
