whats their network like comparing with providers like Superloop/ABB/Leaptel?
do they support ipv6? (cant locate anything in thier FAQ re ipv6)

    • +19

One POP in Sydney and Optus backhaul and you may notice higher latency.

Network wise it's not even close compared to Superloop, Aussie BB and Leaptel.

      • +2

I am with Spintel (250/25 plan) and when I test on Ookla, it shows the server as Aussie Broadband (in Sydney). I am getting 260+ with NordVPN turned off and 250 with VPN on - at any time of day.

        • +2

Yep I am with Spintel too (and in Sydney), however on the higher 750 plan. Been with them for 2-3 months.

I've been with AussieBB and Superloop previously (and others which were rubbish such as Dodo), and for the much cheaper price with Spintel I am definitely happy with the switch.

edit: Reading through other comments in this post, the complaints seem to come from:
          1. People outside of Sydney (not an issue for me)
          2. People who try calling their support (which I haven't had to do)

        • +5

SpinTel is ok in Sydney. SpinTel don't use Aussie BB. Ookla auto selected the Aussie BB speedtest server.

        • +1

          Whats the ping latency though?

    • +4

Unrelated but AussieBB is offering $1 first month on their 50/20 and 25/10
      https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/internet/nbn-plans/

      • +9

wouldn't say "unrelated", its quite relevant

      • +1

Also, first month for free on the 100/20 plan if you call them up.

Or $25 off for 6 months on the plans above that.

    • +18

SpinTel operates with a single Point of Presence (PoP) located in Sydney. All customer traffic from across Australia is routed through this central hub. This centralized infrastructure can lead to increased latency for users situated farther from Sydney, such as those in Melbourne or Western Australia, particularly affecting latency-sensitive activities like online gaming.

      • does anyone know what it is like gaming from Sydney? does opting out of cgnat make any difference to that?

        • +1

Opting out of CGNAT won't make a difference to latency.

        • You can't host online P2P games with CG-NAT on.

You can host online P2P games with CG-NAT off.

    • What people doings with nbn 500 btw?

      • +1

        I seed offsite

        • Thanks whats diff between seed onsite and off site?

      • +1

P2P downloads and also downloading games.

        • -2

Thanks, is vpn enough to keep safe?

Btw Do u ever get puw or some virus in the crack file for games

    • +2

was with them for a month, exited right after, so bad compared to all the above.

    • +1

I was getting 70 from supposedly 250mbps. Moved to superloop after a month

    • Could you tell, how do some providers "Superloop/ABB/Leaptel" differ from others?
I believe, all use the same backbone network from NBN.

I see you mentioned about ipv6. but any other significant differences?
      thanks

  • -5

Guys, i know this has been discussed in the last exetel deal.

But i didn’t understand those complex explanation.

I’m with exetel right now, shall i move to their new nbn 500/40Mbps or not?

I’m not hosting any servers or not doing anything fancy

    Thanks in advance 👍

    • What plan are you running now?

      • I have 50/20mbps

        • +5

Unless you're paying $80 or more, or finding your internet running slowly, then I'd say wait until September when they're going to forcefully migrate you to the new plan anyway. Might as well save your money until then. And when that time comes, look around for a better priced deal for your needs (someone who needs 50mb doesn't need to be paying for 500mb).

          • +1

            @Rail Rider95: Thank buddy

            • +2

@Farid127: 50/20 doesn't get a speed boost. 100/20 boosts to 500/50 for FTTP and HFC. Swap to Exetel 500/50 if you want faster speed now.

              • @Twix: Exetel are replacing all of their plans with a single plan of 500/50 from what I've seen?

                • @Rail Rider95: Yeah Exetel 500/50 for new and existing FTTP/HFC customers. Exetel grandfathered existing customers on all the other nbn technologies.

If you try signup to Exetel on FTTN/FTTC/FTTB they push you to Superloop.

I just switched away from Spintel last week. Had no issues getting connected nearly a year ago, didn't really have any need to contact support in that time. Probably had 2 or 3 10 min service outages during daytime hours across the year. At least one could have been my equipment though, so overall nothing too crazy. But tried to contact them a few weeks back and that was enough to make my decision. Average of 2 days between chat messages with their support while signed into the my account portal. Tried to call them and waited 30mins before they offered the "would you like a call back" feature, all good i hit yes. They then didn't try and call me back for 26 hours, and when i missed that call back, they never tried again.

If you think you can be fine with never having to contact their support, then try their deal out i guess. But I wont be recommending them any time soon based on recent experience. I will also say when i swapped to the superloop connection, browsing did feel slightly more snappy, but that is anecdotal observation so make of that what you will.

    • +9

Just like the car insurance, cheap is the best until you need to contact them.

    • +3

They have a WhatsApp support and max I waited for their response is 5 min

    • +1

I had the same experience. Web chat showed I was > #1000 in the queue. Thought it was a bug at first lol, but I didn’t get a response for anyone for about a week so checks out. When they finally contacted me they blamed the long delays on a public holiday. Switched to Superloop.

    • +1

I swapped from Superloop to Spintel due to the savings and definitely noticed a higher latency even with browsing (although minor for general use). Location is Melbourne if that is of interest to anyone. Haven't had to deal with customer support so can't comment on that!

    • Agree, I was with them about 4-5 years ago in Brisbane and they were absolutely shocking. Can't even remember what the issue was but when the internet isn't working properly, it shouldn't be so difficult to get hold of your provider (on a weekday in the middle of the day).

I'll be sticking with a "good" provider from now on (Aussie BB or Superloop)

  • +12

Pathetic Customer Support. Its Best to avoid.

    • Well Ned and Connor are busy

    • 100% true.. it was good around 3 years back when I joined . but now it's a disaster to contact them.. not recommended

  • Currently with leaptel for $65 for 100/20 that's expiring in 3 months.

Should I make the jump now or wait?

    • Exetel is $80 but always.. wont jump to $85 after 6 months like spintel

      • Exetel also have absolutely no opt out of cg nat..

I have home security and servers i remote into.. if i didnt, i would make the move.

    • +4

I recommend you churn to a better provider than Spintel. Leaptel is honestly so good I would never leave it even if they charge me more, but since this is OzBargain I can understand your deal is expiring and you want to move on. I would maybe try AussieBB or it's subsidiary/sister company Buddy Telco (I haven't tried them though) or wait for another provider's deal. I'm sure something will pop up in the next 2 months or so.

      • I recently switched to Leaptel from Superloop due to their price increase. 250 plan gets 280+ even in peak and been rock solid.

      • -3

        Leaptel are a rort tho

        • +1

          How so?

          • +1

@dinglejerry: They are more expensive than the competition.

            • +1

@vger74656: But I've heard nothing but good things about their quality of service… not like some of the cheaper options. So I am not sure that makes them a 'rort'

    • +1

I read it somewhere that this plan will be auto upgraded to 500/50 in September, without any additional cost.

  • +8

BE AWARE. Only one POP in sydney so unless you are there, this will not be a good experience. No reason not to go with exetel for the average household.

    • What is POP?

      • Point of presence

      • +5

Point of Presence. It's where the ISP connects to provide internet. The closer you are to the POP, the better your speed and latency.

        • where is that POP? and how can i tell what my closest POP is?

          • +2

@whitepuma: My bad its actually POI not POP. Put your adress into here and it will tell you what suburb your POI is.
            https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insigh…

            • @Churna: aha i thought it was POI, but then thought "maybe i'v had it wrong this whole time" so i just went with it.

I know what POI i'm closest to, but i'm not sure which one within NSW Spintel has

              • @whitepuma: Yeah honestly it would only be 5ms to any POI from anywhere in NSW (with fibre)

            • @Churna: So the NBN has 121 PoIs… but the traffic has to be transported from the nearest PoI to the end user to the RSPs nearest Point of Presence .

    • No problem with getting full bandwidth of 250mbps in melb on HFC

      • yeah Melb to Syd would only take under 10ms and would have major direct Links. I am in perth, 55ms at a minimum

  • super slow in WA, support is non existence

    • I'm with them and have been for 18mth.

Besides the disconnection once every so often, my speed been good.

Just ran a test and I'm getting 265/25.

Customer support wasn't so bad for me.

  • +1

Here is my experience with them. Overall good if you know what you are doing and have no issue with connecting to Sydney pop. Support is mainly over chat or email. Had to ring few times and ask about my slow connection which magically got rectified. The biggest gripe I had with them is that I got a $5/m loyalty discount which I could not transfer to another plan (upgrade) and that they wouldn't consider a price match on the upgrade. Now I'm on leaptel 100/20 and speed wise seems to be better. Had a bit of a hiccup with the transfer but was resolved very quickly so can't really complain. So overall very happy with the move to Leaptel.

  • Been with Spintel for 7 months now…..I'm in the Riverina NSW.. haven't had to contact them once since I signed up with them.
I'm on the 225/20 currently, speeds have been consistent with my plan. Currently paying $92.50 (just had an increase July 1st.)

Will change my plan to 500/50 if possible.

Overall I have no complaints using ST.

    • Should of mentioned my connection is FTTP.

    • No, your plan changes from 250/25 to 750/50.

FTTP and HFC old speed tiers for existing customers get changed from September. It's up to the provider on what speed tiers they sell.

Old Speed Tiers New Speed Tiers nbn Technology Type
      100/20 500/50 FTTP and HFC
      250/25 750/50 FTTP and HFC
      1000/50 1000/100 FTTP and HFC
      2000/100 HFC
      2000/200 FTTP
      2000/500 FTTP
      • +1

Okay, thanks Twix for the info.

        • +4

All good. There are faster and cheaper deals than 250/25 $92.50/m.

ISP and Speed Price CG-NAT Static IP (Optional)
          Leaptel 100/20 (500/50 soon) $79.95/m for 12 months CG-NAT can be turned off for $0 $10/m
Exetel 500/50 $80 ongoing CG-NAT can't be turned off Not Avaliable
          Superloop 100/20 (500/50 soon) $75/m for 6 months CG-NAT can be turned off for $0 $5/m
          Superloop 1000/50 (1000/100 soon) $85/m for 6 months CG-NAT can be turned off for $0 $5/m
      • is this confirmed at the RSP level? I've seen a couple of providers commit to it, but not Spintel yet

        • +1

nbn is making the changes and the new speed tiers are confirmed.

SpinTel hasn't said anything yet apart from this new customer deal.

    • you should move to the Exetel plan? $80 for 500/50

  • Anyone got a leaptel referral code??

    • -1

      DM you the referral.

    • Ive got one if you still need

  • +3

Like some of the other comments, I found SpinTel's chat support response times pretty lacklustre. That combined with very poor evening speeds made me switch away from them.

  • +3

Just a heads-up: if your payment gets rejected on the due date (via auto debit) and you manually pay your bill on the same day, Spintel charges a hidden fee. A failed auto debit attempt incurs a $15 bounce-back fee. I wouldn’t recommend joining Spintel again.

  • anyone got a churn recommendation for someone who has been with: Spintel, tangerine, superloop and leaptel?

    • +2

Buddy Telco or go back to Superloop or Leaptel if it's been more than 12 months.

      • +1

cheers, been about 3 years since i was a superloop customer.

        • +1

All good. Exetel 500/50 is another however CG-NAT can't be turned off and Static IP is not available.

CG-NAT can be turned off for $0 or $5/m Static IP @ Superloop.

        • Back to Superloop deal then. Churn from ABB took 1 hour. Getting CGNAT disabled took 15 minutes. Happy days.

    • I've been summoned. What speed do you want? If just basic 25/10 then FUBAR NBN cant be passed at $53.90 ongoing.
if you need a higher plan honestly the Exetel $80 500/50 is hard to pass.

      • +1

sorry forgot to mention the reqs, im after 250mbps minimum speed. i just saw exetels $80 banger, looks a proper bargain.

        • +1

Yeah hard to beat right now tbh. Ongoing price as well is untouchable. Southern Phone is slightly cheaper at $75 BUT they only have one POI in sydney and have pretty terrible reviews.

    • I’ve generally been happy switching back and forth between Superloop and Leaptel. I did notice a few more outages when I was with Leaptel. Support was good with both when I had issues with my router config.

      • +2

Leaptel had some outage problems a couple years ago.

Leaptel moved to Superloop backhaul with more redundancy in late 2024 and that means less outages.

        • +1

          Good to know thanks

  • +3

Terrible service when I had to deal with them.

At first their total ignorance was helpful because I could steer them in the right direction and get NBN called-out quickly. But once NBN pushed back and said it was Spintel's fault they just doubled down and wouldn't do anything. Literally started tell me that if I didn't like the service they provide then I should go elsewhere. But I stuck with it solely because I knew starting over wasn't going to help, and I was nearly certain it was actually an NBN issue. Which it was. They replaced my NTD and happy days ever since.

They were telling me that NBN requires 5 drop-outs PER DAY to consider it a fault worthy of a call-out (which is true of NBN, but they shouldn't accept this either). So, luckily, for one day they stuffed up enough to trigger that fifth fault. But Spintel just wanted me to go away. They hate having to deal with any issues and try to eject their "troublesome" customers.

And of course once they'd served their purpose to me I jumped back to Aussie Broadband. Now a Superloop customer purely on price. And I'm happy enough.

  • +2

Don't do it, Spintel are horrendous. I've been with Aussie, Internode, iiNet, Exetel, Leaptel, Superloop, and many more – Spintel are the worst and it's not even close

  • How is Superloop? They have 1000/50 for $85 for 6 months

    • I’m with them for the second time now and no complaints. I’m on 50/20 and just did a speed test on my phone and got 52+.

I actually just noticed it’s time for me to churn, thanks for reminding me haha

  • Anyone know if they do opticomm plans? Cant find any info

  • Earlier their support was good, but now the worst. Getting them via chat, whatsapp or call .. all same

  • CG-NAT by default. Opting out of CGNAT is $5/month, so this is $1 cheaper than Exetel.

Where is this $5 credit for opting out of CGNAT ??

    • +1

You don't get a $5 credit. You pay SpinTel $2/month to turn off CG-NAT.

  • +2

I dont need 500/50. I only need 100/40 for $40 per month, lol

  • Wth im on Spintels 250/25 which is $80 a month and their raising that to $85 so where is my speed upgrade…
