    Have this backpack.
I swear I paid less than 70 for it.
Good backpack, works best when stuffed full.

    • +1

Yeah, price on this thing has gone up in the past year. Use to see it sub $80 in sales. Now $99.99 is a good price.

40L is a tad bigger than what I need for my next trip else I'd have gotten one too.

      • The straps allow it to be pulled in so it seems like a smaller bag.

    • +3

According to ozb record, the lowest it has been reported was $82.49. I bought in August last year for $93. Really good quality backpack.

      • Hmmm, strange. I thought i had seen it lower. Maybe i got confused with USD.

Still for sub $100, 40L bags, it looks like one of the better ones.

    • +1

      Same experience here.

Travelled around Japan with it. Very handy as a overnight bag, when waiting on luggage forwarding services.
Comfortable enough to lug around and also small enough to fit into modest train station lockers, etc.

      • +7

Overnight bag?! Could one bag the world with 40L

        • I'm not sure what you mean sorry

          • +2

@Last Seen: 40L of luggage space would be enough to store all the things you'd need to travel the world at least one time

            • @Qwertyworm: Yes, especially if you are filling backpack with cash using only US$100 bills (multiple trips around the world if you use 500 euro banknotes)

        • +1

It's a bag for minimalist round the world trip or very kinky overnight stay.

Both would be a win - lol

        • Yeah I’ve onebagged with this twice now and it has been great. Also use it for edc

  • +4

How come no one posts about the tomtoc eshay bag anymore either? Does ozbargain have a new favourite I don’t know about? 😭

    • +1

More like the eshays have a new favourite you don't know about lol

Any recommendations for 9/10 for $99-100 range?

I bought this one instead $77 with coupon

Bought a similar style travel backpack from Kmart at $39 and used it on a 3 night domestic trip. It was fantastic value for money. Had plenty of pockets, padded back, luggage handle strap and is expandable to fit more in on the return journey.

    • +2

I bought the Inateck 42L backpack off Amazon 2 weeks ago, I'm really happy with it.
Great for shopping while on a bike, as it's on the larger size for a day pack. It's still on sale now, approx $77.
"Dimensions 553522 cm, this backpack meets the carry-on requirements in many airlines".
For Virgin, Jetstar, Qantas and Garuda all have the hand luggage max size is 56x36x23cm, so it's the perfect size to max out your carry on luggage.

      • Awesome. Great feedback. Yet to use mine but have 3 trips coming up.

      • Edit, sorry I didn't proof read my copy & paste, the dimensions are 55x35x22 cm not 553522 cm.

      • Where's the coupon>?

    • Highly recommended. We have two of these 42L version and one of 20L as well. You can fit this in Jetstar carryon size requirement (if they don't weigh it lol) because you can literally put 20 kg worth of stuff in it. Really handy. We used them in our trip to US and were very very useful. Comfortable, so many pockets, flexible, can put loads of stuff and best of all, fits carry on luggage requirements of most airlines. We in fact relied on them most of our trip without going with check in luggage, saved time and money.. and I believe these are water resistant as well (though we didn't check that). Very sturdy, quality is top notch. They are so good that I ended up buying another inateck bag (a different model for a change) We've got four now and probably will use them solely as our only luggage for upcoming overseas trips.

  • +2

Have this. Its a bit busy - too many straps pockets etc that inflate the weight a little. But otherwise solid af

  • +1

So a backpack like this could replace standard carry-on luggage?

    • +4

Yes. Meaning if you travel light you can travel without doing any baggage checking/collecting - it makes the airport process feel far more streamlined.
Also means you can take full advantage of the price deals that often drop that are often incredibly cheap bare-bones flights without baggage.

      • +5

First time one-bagging and it was so liberating.
No need to worry about manual checkin , just do online check-in and straight to the gate (be aware though some places you might need to present to the counter as they will check Visas/return flights etc.)
Everythings with you on the flight if you need it (break you stuff into overhead bin bag and a light weight underseat bag for convenience)
Don't have to worry about taxis/cars to get around can just jump on a Grab Bike.
No having to find luggage storage when you check out and don't fly out till later in the day
No waiting around and wondering if your bag made it at the carousels
On return into Australia , from disembarking the plane through immigration and customs 15 minutes.
Had allowances of 7kg (Virgin) , 7kg (Airasia) and 10 kg (Scoot) and had about 8.5kg packed (had to take some medication which threw me over) but was willing to take the risk, and regardless of forums saying "Budget airlines like Air Asia and Scoot will weigh your bag", my bag never got weighed once :P
After this trip pretty sure I can get it under 7kg for the next trip.

Obviously this suited me for the South East Asia trip where it was 44 degrees and 70 humidity each day, so just tshirts and undies clothes wise, and going somewhere colder probably wouldn't work for me as I'd need warmer (and hence heavier) clothing.

If you get a chance give it a go.

        • South East Asia trip where it was 44 degrees and 70 humidity each day

Where exactly is it 44 every day in SE Asia? I hope that's a typo…

          • @Gina Rinehart: Kuching , Sarawak, Malaysia. Real temp each day for almost the whole week was those sort of temperatures !!!!!

            • @Limbot: The record high in Kuching is 37.1 degrees.

I get it, it was hot with the humidity but let's not be ridiculous lol.

        • You were carrying 1.5kgs of meds? 😂

          Agree with your points 100%

    • +2

Yes but I wouldn't go for this one. It's a little too curved in sections and complex. Pretty robust though.

      https://amzn.asia/d/a5wenfG

Cheaper and probably more useful due to its boxyness as carry on.

If you plan to go just carry on for travel I highly recommend the zipper compression packing cubes. You pack like normal and zip up to compress down. Easily get a week's worth of clothes into a pack like this. Traveled 2 months through Europe with that set up and doing laundry every week.

  • +1

Love it. Works great with the peak design large camera cube if you need to turn it into a full camera bag.

  • +1

Anyone know how this compares to the last Decathlon one that was popular? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/887578

  • +2

It's a great bag if you don't want to check in. Can fit a few days worth of clothes and essentials

    • You can fit a week’s worth unless you’re travelling in winter

  • Just wondering if people think this can double as a good everyday backpack as well as a travel bag? Watched a couple of reviews but just wondering if it's a big bit for a 73kg, 175cm male commuting to work

    • +1

Depend on how much you EDC really :) My normally EDC is a Bellroy 20 litre (Surface Pro, 15.6 portable monitor, TKL mech keyboard, Tech Pouch, 710ml Camelbak Podium, few other bits and pieces. If I know I've got to take extra stuff to work or if I know I need to pick something up to bring home (e.g. puppy pads), then I use the Tomtoc. The nice thing is that the compression straps do allow you to minimize the size of the bag if you're not filling it. YMMV. Oh and popular consensus is that it's not really a 40litre bag, more like a 35-38 litre bag.

      • +4

The definition of 'EDC' has well and truly eroded if people are now classifying portable monitors and mechanical keyboards as 'everyday' carries. Whatever happened to Asian guys on YouTube limiting it to pocket knives and fancy, overpriced pens?

        • True, perhaps EDC isn't quite the right term :)

        • +2

          EDC: portable home office.

    • It might be a decent fit for you. I'm 163cm with a short torso. After watching YT reviews from similar sized users I decided to go for a backpacks not exceeding 30L for short term travel and commuting.

      • I'm a similar size to you, which ones do you recommend please?

        • +1

I bought the Osprey Sojourn Porter 30L (recent model). This review sold me the on it the most: https://www.wanderlustchloe.com/review-osprey-sojourn-porter…
It isn't the cheapest. I didn't read/watch an awful review on it. The comfort is comparable to a trekking/hunting pack I have (Kifaru G2 70L plus molle pouches). I was also drawn to the green colour so I can be easily spotted by my travelling mates or if someone were to pinch it I'd have a better chance of spotting it.

    • I’m not much taller than you and it’s totally fine for me. I’ve done two onebag trips with this and use it every day for my commute. You can tighten the straps on the sides to make it really slim when it’s not full.

  • Still searching for the perfect onebag carry-on for extended travel that weighs under a kilogram and doesn’t cost $500. Considering going MYOG, it’s just fabric, zips and stitches after all right.

    • Just did 3 weeks Vietnam/Malaysia one bagging it with a Bellroy Lite 38 litre travel pack. It's about 1.1kg empty which is light compared to the Tomtoc T66 at around 1.3kg. At $329 it's not "cheap" as such, but its capacity and flexibility suited. Originally bought the Tomtoc to do this trip, however it's slightly smaller size and slightly heavier weights meant the Bellroy was a better candidate.

      • Which colour did you get? I'm not sure I'd be game to get the Ash colour at >$300

        • +1

When I got, black was the only option :)

I actually have a Bellroy lite sling too in the Ash colour which I used (and also use just on weekends etc) and yes, the lighter colours do get dirty pretty quickly. Your supposed to spot clean but I'm considering putting it in a delicates bag and throwing onto a delicates cycle in the washing machine. But it's not that dirty that I won't use it, just not as "clean" as it was when I got it :P

      • Quite close to my use case :) but a few months on the road. I have bulky equipment I must carry so even a 400g saving helps.

The belroy seems nice but personally I want something that can do hikes and doesn’t look like a travel bag. Fussy, I know. Something like the Gossamer Gear Mariposa.

    • I've gone 4 x Japan and 1 x USA 1 x Fiji with just the previous version of this guy, bloody good bag, doesn't looks like much a changed between versions. $115 is around the usual on sale price.

      https://www.anacondastores.com/camping-hiking/packs-bags/tra…

      • Seems good for the price if you like the travel bag style.

    • I dont think it exists. If you do find something, let me know.
I have the tomtoc, and it's literally in the overhead compartment on a flight home from Melbourne right now. As a work bag it can do a week fairly easily (packing intelligently), as well as overnights. I do put my laptop and iPad in a small carry case so I can either slip it in the back of the tomtoc, or carry it separately. I dont think there is enough padding in the laptop sleeve of the tomtoc on its own.

Other people have mentioned it in this discussion, but it's a bigger volume bag, and it can carry a LOT of weight. Not great if you're transiting through airports a lot. Good if you aren't walking with it a lot. I did travel through Japan with it and used it for shopping/jumpers (carrying kids jumpers and general stuff) and it was good. I didnt abuse it, but it got a work out and it took the knocks well.

To that point, I wouldn't use it as an EDC unless you need space for gym shoes, extra clothes, jackets, laptops, toiletries and everything else you could possibly use in a day. It doesnt use space well (one big compartment, a couple of smaller pockets which things fall out of very easily), so think of it more like a wheeled cabin bag sized backpack. Yes, it does cinch down with the straps.

Compared to other single bag/overnight options, including wheeled cabin bags with inbuilt laptop storage, I think the tomtoc is quite good. It is not perfect (it can get heavy, single compartment not ideal), but packed smart (packing cubes, cable case, etc) it works well.

    • I've been looking for the same. I'll likely go with Cabin Zero Classic Plus.

  • Anyone that has this…. How does it carry without a hip belt/strap? Any bag of this size without a hip belt seems to be "heavy"

    • I probably wouldn’t go on a multi-day hike with it but I’ve done a couple of trips carrying 7-10kgs in it and it’s been fine waiting in long immigration lines and walking around for a few hours

  • +1

I got this version. Pretty happy with it. Very versatile. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008646577730.html

I paid less than $60 a few years back. Still cheap and great value at $81.69

  • i bought this 5 years ago

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Hynes-Eagle-Backpack-Luggage-Aerop…

Back then it was around $70 and offers about 40L of capacity. It's a decent weekender bag. Loved it for when I'd visit family and I'd fly up from Melb to Syd for a 4 day trip.

Prob the biggest gripe I had is when you have a laptop in the padded section then opening the bag was a bit unweildly. Also, the bag was easier to handle when it was more fuller. I had wished they could use some kind of fabric that would give the bag more structure, or maybe have a way to insert plastric strips along the edges to allow that.

  • any recommendation bag to use for rome trip without getting pick pocketed?

    • Pacsafe got some cool features but hard to find cheap

    • +1

First off, don’t carry your 40L bag around Rome - leave it at your accommodation if you can. Instead, use a small cross-body bag for your valuables like your wallet, passport, and phone, and wear it in front of you. Avoid keeping anything important in your back pockets. Honestly, it’s not that hard to stay safe from pickpockets. I just spent three months travelling across Europe and never had an issue or even a close call with pickpockets.

      • Arrived at the airport and instantly had people warn us of nearby gypsies

  • Does anyone have thoughts on how this compares to Osprey 40L Farpoint?
I currently have the Farpoint but I've never really liked it due to the laptop on the front and I've found it awkward to pack.

    Thoughts please?

    https://www.osprey.com/farpoint-40-travel-pack-farpont40f22-…

    • Osprey is superior - packing this is also awkward for laptops because it needs a lot of table space to open up and reach things

      • Osprey +1

      • What do you mean? You can access your laptop easily from the top of the bag like a regular backpack. There’s also access to the main compartment from the top of the bag. The only time I’ve ever laid it down to open the main compartment is when I’ve been packing/unpacking clothes at hotels, etc.

    • +1

By the way, there are two versions of the Farpoint 40L. The original has a shoulder strap, attachment points on the bag, and a front laptop compartment in the second (smaller) zip section. The newer version removes the strap and attachment points, moves the laptop compartment to a side zipper behind your back, and replaces the second small zip section with an external front stash pocket.

If you’ll be wearing your 40L backpack a lot while travelling, the Osprey is arguably one of the most comfortable options out there. But if your travel style is more "carry it from the airport or station to the hotel and leave it there", you might prefer a 40L bag or duffel with easier compartment access and simpler packing/unpacking.

      • Thanks for the response, I've got the original version.

I do wear it around when traveling. Looks like I'll stick with the Osprey then.

        Thanks all.
