Agoda: 17% Cashback on Accommodation & Hotels (18% Cashback with ShopBack Plus), $150 Cap Per Order @ ShopBack

201

Shopback has upsized the cashback amount for Agoda. The cashback rates are as follows

Hotels: 17% (capped at $150 per item)
Package (hotel portion): 17% (capped at $150 per item)

Note: For Shopback plus, add an extra 1.0% on top of the rates above

I have been tracking hotel booking + cashbacks for a few months and 17% cashback is the best rate that I have seen

Tips for Hotels

Before booking hotels, I think it's best to check the hotel price using the following methods and find the cheapest one:
1. Check the price of the hotel using Agoda using Incognito Mode without Shopback
2. Check the price of the hotel using Google, by specifying the exact hotel and dates
3. Check the price of the hotel using Agoda with Shopback and calculate the price with the cashback. Keep in mind that the cashback amount may not apply to the tax portion of the price

Also, use the free cancellation option and cancel/rebook later when a cheaper price comes up.

When booking via Agoda, always check using incognito mode without Cashback first. Their prices are frequently higher when coming from a Cashback site or other referral link. With 17% cashback you'll still likely come out in front, but it's not as simple as a straight 17% win!

    • +2

Further to that make sure to get all the way to checkout to check the final price as Agoda prices do not include sales tax and 'other fees'.

I still find them the cheapest in certain areas, but I find it pretty dodgy the final price can be ~40% more than the advertised price.

      • I have an existing booking through Wotif and with that cashback Agoda comes out better by about $5 if it's calculated with GST and there's no intl transaction fee (as Agoda may be offshore). Not willing to risk it and the hassle to cancel the other one just for $5 (I know this is OzB!)

    • Have found this to be the case for most booking amalgamation websites.

      • Yep, prices sometimes get cheaper when you view it from another hotel price comparison site (e.g. viewing from google). Every hotel chain is different so its really frustrating sometimes.

Says its capped at $150 per order.

    • Thank you for this. I have updated the post

$150 cap per account or per order ? Thinking to split $1600 7 nights room into 2 separate booking to get more than $150

    • On desktop and with Plus, it says per order if you click on the link.

Just keep in mind that the hotel may ask you to check out of the room and check into a different room, i.e. you may need to pack your luggage and unpack it

      • Should be a near zero chance as long as you book the exact same room type and mention the second booking at check-in

      • If you book the same room type the chances of this happening are quite low in my experience, I've never been asked and I've split bookings like this almost all the time.

      • I notice that there is 1 accomodation doing that daily regardless at certain time and if you fail, they will charge you extra. They are not telling you this in advanced. Better to read the reviews before make any booking guys.

    • More importantly, where are you staying? 🤩😁

      • You may need to avoid Business Hotel if you are stsying with kids

Nothing against op, but I really don't like these 'deals'.

There should be a law against practices where they jack up the price to discount it when going through cashback portals, no different to retailers, online or otherwise.

This is another perfect example - checked the same 4* hotel through portal and another on another device via website directly. Even with cashback, booking directly through agoda website ends up $6 per night cheaper.

I seldom use the neg vote, but I feel people should be aware when they're not truly getting a bargain.

    • That's fair enough

I have booked a few hotels in the last few months and I found that this deal offers a better price compared to my previous bookings on some hotels (but not others).

As pointed out in my original post, I think it is a good idea to check the price using the three methods I listed and find the cheapest one. I am not saying that you should blindly go for the 17% deal without a bit of research/investigation. Whether the deal offers a better price depends on the hotel, dates, room type, number of people and maybe other factors.

    • Totally agree. Just had a similar experience with a property i was looking. Direct agoda app with their auto applied copupons $611 (came down to 570 with VPN). Through shopback its up $738 (~$642 with cashback)

      • Which location did you set your VPN to? Do you usually have much success changing location with VPN for booking things?
I haven't seen any difference the few times I've tried different locations via VPN

        • +1

Tried only a few randomly and found Bangladesh to be cheapest. There may be others even cheaper. I noted if you go through the shopback, the vpn discount goes away. I guess simple process is to just check the direct prices adjusted with cashback and then compare with vpn prices.

          • @Hallaj: I didn't know such a thing could occur - but makes sense noting that different locations even with subscriptions gets different pricing. I'll try tonight with VPN to Bangladesh with both Agoda and Booking and see if it's cheaper for the hotel I've already booked. Have you found this happens with a specific website, i.e. Agoda or does it occur mostly across the booking websites board?

            • @eltito: To be honest, this was my first time as well. I was literally toggling the vpn and refreshing agoda app to see the price difference.

      • Which VPN are you using? Any free VPNs that are out there?

    • There are certainly still deals but I do find the Agodas, Booking.coms and the related sites all have a cashback landing page where almost everything has been jacked up in price so after cashback, it's more or less the same as if you didn't go through CB at all.

But there are still others that don't do this nearly as much like trip.com for example.

No need for a neg at all. There are savings to be had, especially at 17-18%.

Hardly ever experienced price differentials, and have about $2000 in hotel cashbacks, mainly expedia, but some Agoda.

Not wanting to state the obvious, people should be still xhecking the direct price as well as Agoda without the SB links etc.

  • How do you calculate the price eligible for cashback (removing taxes and service charges)?

    • It can be a bit tricky. What I do is that I book the hotels with free cancellation and work out the actual price (after the cashback is confirmed)

When another attractive deal comes up, I do it again, ie, I double book the hotel, then cancel the one that is more expensive

      • Do you find that the eligible cashback price matches what is listed on the final booking page? (E.g. I see 7% taxes and 10% service charge on my potential hotel booking price, do I just take the shopback price on Agoda and * 0.83 to get the eligible purchase price for cashback?)

        • +1

It's a bit mixed. When the hotel price contains tax and fees, the amount of cashback does not necessarily equal to the hotel charge (minus tax and fees) * 17%. The most reliable way is to book the hotel with free cancellation and check the cashback amount (when it gets tracked)

Yes, I know double-booking might be a bit wrong, but the cashback amount usually gets tracked within a few days, so you can cancel the double-booking pretty quickly

  • Does anyone has experience booking for a fake listing and only find out when you arrive there and not existed ? How the booking agent filter out from the fake listing ? I found one accomodation that seems being photoshoped and google the address, but unable to see if there is any visible apartment and only business building. Will booking agent do duligence before letting them putting the ad ?

Only book mainstream hotels with hundreds of reviews on the platform and google. It isn't rocket science.

  • +1

I usually find when Agoda has these “cashback” deals they always jack up the prices. Happens all the time and sometimes it just works out better using their “one time discount” promotion thing they have on their website when you don’t go through the cashback sites. I find Expedia better at not jacking up prices.

  • Ah, didn't realize it's expired at 4pm. It's now reverted back to 15% but there doesn't seems to be any cap (so better if we have bigger booking, no need to split). Btw, anyone know if the "pay later" will affect the cashback?

    • +1

The pay later option does not affect the cash back. I've been using the pay later + free cancellation option

      • Thanks, 15% is still not bad. The one I want to book happened to be slightly cheaper on Agoda than Booking, etc. And don't even need to split, if there's no cap
