Hmmm… are ppl still buying Blu-Ray Players ? Is it worth spending $550+ on these ? not sure

I have a big 4k disc library and even I don't have one. I've wondered too.

The reason I have 4k is because it'll likely be the last opportunity to buy movies before discs are phased out, so might as well buy at best quality.

Exactly. Let's not forget that movies purchased on streaming services are never yours to keep forever, only until they decide to change the terms and conditions.

        • Good example - I still have a sealed 28 days + 28 weeks later Bluray which I got for probably $10, now going for upwards of $100 because you can't find 28 days later anywhere atm.

      Yes and yes

        Why get a $500 bluray player over a PS5/XSX?

        • +3

Dolby Vision, mostly. But also a lot more control over audio/visual settings. And my PS5 and Xbox struggle to play many 100GB films, so I bought the UB820 for reliability.

I managed to get it for $468.99 just before EOFY. Currently it's showing as $562.10 for me:

    • Nice one, I wish you had posted that deal! That link is showing $619 for me (Prime member): I wonder why?

I picked up a DP-UB820GNK from Amazon for $538 (delivered, w/ Prime) on June 23rd. Also "just before EOFY"! Hmmmm.

I thought it was posted as a deal, but I think I spotted this one, went digging, and found it priced reasonably. My bad; should've posted something.

This unit does a great tone mapping to projectors that dont support HDR. Great unit for those with physical media. Ive long since digitized the library and play with Zidoo player. For those saying why bother just stream. For the niche people like me, bitrate and truely lossless 7.1.4 audo is really important. Streaming has its place although.

I don't actually think what you are doing is niche. I think there is beginning to be a trend away from streaming now. There are so many streaming services causing media to be scattered across multiple subscriptions, and the subscription prices are increasing, and sometimes you still have to watch adverts…

Also, sometimes a streaming service ridiculously doesn't have the complete series of a show. Another thing is that the availability of any particular show or movie is at the whims of the streaming services.

You own your physical media (and digitised library) forever. Buy it once, own it forever. Streaming essentially means you're paying every time you want to re-watch something.

      • For those on the grey (or dark) side of things a good solution there is Stremio with Torrentio with real debrid, then you get everything that available online ;)

    • what's the benefits of physical media like 4k bluray vs remux 4k digital file, assuming both support the same format, e.g. 4k, hdr, truehd atmos? any difference in quality?

      • If its a remix at 1:1 into a mkv container , you are correct, none.

  • Big W marketplace also does this for $570-588.

    • Yep, but sold and shipped by Appliances Online. Better to buy direct if you can access the first purchase or referral code.

  • Price seems very high. Is there actually a more affordable entry level 4k player than this?

Yes, Panasonic also makes the UB150 and UB450. The UB450 also has Dolby Vision and is available from $275: https://www.mydeal.com.au/panasonic-dp-ub450gn-4k-uhd-blu-ra…

Sony makes the X700 which retails for $350.

The UB820 is widely considered the best player available though (compared to the much more expensive UB9000 and the Magnetars)
