Panasonic DP-UB450GN 4K UHD Blu Ray Player $239 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

230

Key Features
- Supports HDR10+ & Dolby Vision HDR formats for optimal viewing quality
- Dolby Atmos / DTS:X Surround Sound support
- High-resolution Audio Playback (DSD, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF)
- Twin HDMI
- Supports Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs

This model does not have the HCX chipset found in the UB420/UB820 so apparently does not upscale DVD/Bluray as well, although reviewing various forums seems to be a lot of “feels” about this.

Can be modified for multi region blu-ray playback by Gatti Web (https://www.gattiweb.com/product/panasonic-dp-ub420-dp-ub450…) which is a reputable service and comes recommended. Unlike the UB420/UB820/UB9000 there's no "free" option available.

  • I don't see any click and collect options in Victoria, do wonder if this on clear out. JB now only carry 2 4K UHD players (the Sony X700 is no longer available), wonder if it's been consolidated to the UB820.

  • I've been using my Xbox Series X for a while as my Samsung TV doesn't support Dolby Vision but I do want a dedicated player long term.

Not sure if I should just continue to wait it out until I have a more pressing need (TV upgrade to DV or XSX fault) or purchase sooner rather than later just in case the players start to get phased out.

Stay clear from this product and get as far away as you can. You've been warned.

Get the equivalent which is Sony if available.

        How come?

The Sony's X700/X800's users need to manually enable Dolby Vision, and they don't handle triple layer 100gb very well.

        • How come?

The door mechanism on this particular model don't work at all. Sometimes it opens and closes and most not than often. I had to regularly do lots of mashing with the eject button and unplugging the unit for some time before it will finally open.

Tried it on 3 same above models and three times I have returned them to JB Hifi and in the end settled for the Sony and never looked back.

True. I have experienced a problem when the movie would just freeze and pause with no warning and when that happens, I just press Stop then Play and I'm on my merry way again. I left the Dolby Vision on as default and I really didn't notice any difference in quality wise.

I had the same issue with my UB820, which shares the same physical drive. I become pretty adept at "unlocking" it by pulling apart the drive and adjusting the belt, but it would eventually play up again. Ended up buying a replacement drive and touch wood haven't had the same issue since. I can understand why it put you off.

        Why ?

I have the Sony X700. I had quite a lot of issues with it initially, with it freezing and crashing. I spent much time cursing at it. After some searching, I learned that it had to do with overheating. Having a few blu ray cases sit on top of it was enough for it to overheat and crash. I have since learned that I can't place anything on top of it as it would stop heat dissipation. Strange but true.

As @Randolph Duke indicates, you have to manually enable Dolby Vision, which is weird. Other than this, I have not had issues with it, but I'd probably favour the Panasonic.

Sony X700 is notorious for not being able to handle triple-layer discs. I've watched at least 30 4Ks on my UB-450 and had a freeze on one disc (The Green Mile 4K), no other issues.

The irony is the movie disc probably plays fine on a gaming console such as the PS5. I use a PS5 Slim for playing blu-ray movies and i've never had a freezing issue from any 4K BD title. No standalone blu-ray player here. At least the PS5 receives constant updates to fix any issues.

  • Even though this doesn't have the upscaling chip of the UB-820, Blu-rays still look fantastic on this (watching on a TCL C845). I haven't had the opportunity for a comparison, but I suspect the 820 will only look a little better, and that's if you take the time to tweak the settings.

The TV itself would be doing the upscaling. So i guess TCL 4K tvs come with a good upscaling chip.

      • Unless you go out of your way to set a Panasonic player to output 1080p, it will upscale dvd/bluray to 4K. It doesn’t do auto resolution by source.

    • Alittle over double the price for that functionality, there are no cheap players anymore, probably due to no competition

  • No stock in SA.
