RigidBot 3D Printer - Pledge Preorder for $860 Delivered in October

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Guys,
I couldn't resist. OzBargainer within me just trumped all over the logic part of my brain.
I just wanted to design and build plastic crap no one but me would ever use :)
Print my own HTPC case, or little statues of me strategically positioned around the house in such a way even Kim Jong-un would be envious.

While there are other 3D printers out there none have such a huge build volume for such a small price. I wanted to share with anyone wanting one of these before the expiry runs out on May 11. It already surpassed its funding goal by 15 times so it is most definitely happening.

For a 100 micron (0.1mm) layer capable 3D printer with:

They may add more Pledge options in the future.

Not your typical OzBargain but a bargain none the less.

i dont think he is the person behind the kickstarter, just someone who thinks its a good product, even still, probably belongs in the forums

Kick starter product rarely delivered on time, so by October 2013 it probably means Feb 2014.

That's absolutely true, I just got pebble smart watch this month. I pledged last September.

I don't think promoting a kickstarter project can be considered a bargain.

Damn you ozbargain, now I want one.

  • how does the thing print wood?
does it really print as such, it seem to just build the item.
Such a new concept for me anyways!

    • From what I understand it is a wood mixed with plastic to form a filament and the printer head changes temperatures during print, leaving darker or lighter pattern in "wood material" during printing.

    • Simple … google. Here it can print a house https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SObzNdyRTBs

  • There are lots of potential future uses for a 3d Printer, but for now there are mostly useful for building decoraion/statues/jewelry type items. If the 3d models were available, one could print armies of miniatures (wargaming, D&D, Warhammer…)

    • Are you plusing the idea of a 3d printer or this item as a bargain?
Keep in mind no one has used one, and wont until 'possibly' september.

This is not the best price available for this product, it is the only price available.

Fyi, I am a massive Kickstarter fan having backed almost 50 projects.

    • Fair enough man, but considering build volume of other printers on the market price is a very good one and I wanted to let you guys know about it. Probably should've used forums straight up, forgot about them.

Not on sale yet. Put in forum.

  • I don't think 'kickstarters' count as bargains in this sort of sense, otherwise you could post almost the whole website on here. Better off in forum I think.

For the build volume this is truly cheap as 3D printers go.

    • ^ what he said. This is a terrific price for such a large build volume.

Best guess as to the price of the (10")³ jobbie in kit form is about 4 hunjie - that is amazing for a printer that has the same build platform and output specs as a Replicator2.

FWIW, as Cory Doctorow's readers will already know it's actually possible to build a 3D printer with a 1000in³ volume (i.e., 10" on a side) and 100µm layer resolution from scratch for less (~$250 all in, excluding your labour/search/wait costs). Even so, if you include some decent guesses for search and delivery-wait costs, and you get to 4 hunjie pretty easily.

(Also, for another 2 hunjie or so you can mod it to do metal and ceramic printing.)

Sadly, because I have a gigantic soccer-ball sized head, a 10-inch cube is not sufficient to produce life-size copies of my bonce. In time I will realise my dream of an army of atomic monsters with my head on them in gleaming chrome with racing stripes. Where will your 'god' be then, people-who-picked-on-me-in-school?

Anyone remember back when a 1ppm A3 dot-matrix printer cost $3K and made a noise like a cat being vivisected? I do.

I have nothing to do with the project other than being one of the backers and I thought to share the love. Putting it in forums was a more sensible option. My apologies for not thinking of it before.
