MEL/BNE/SYD to Europe Return Flying QANTAS from $1055

1820

Hi everyone,

I've spent most of the afternoon booking 4 sets of these flights for my friends so I thought it was about time to post it up on OzBargain.

Travel dates are: Leave between Oct 2 til Nov 30, Return whenever (latest I booked was 2 Feb 14)
These are direct flights on Qantas or Qantas Code-share with Emirates and start from ~$1055 (to London) on expedia.com.br website and range up to $1300.

This is the $1055 one that I found:
Leaving 28/11/13 SYD - LHR
Return 31/12/13 LHR - SYD
2174 BRL ~ $1053.29 (on XE)

If you book a multitrip, you can fly into London and out of Dubai for $955AUD or you can just pick 2 random European cities to fly into and out of and it shouldn't cost more than $1400

Furthermore, you get Qantas points and status. A MEL - LON return will reap upwards of 22,000 points which is enough for a return trip between Melbourne and Sydney.

        • Ive booked with expedia but how do you check this on the Qantas site?

        • Insert the reference number into "Manage My Booking" or if you've included a FF number when booking it should appear in your FF account.

  • +1

maybe update title to include ADL i found plenty of deals from there for similar dates, shame im building a house and trying for baby bit risky to book

    • +1

Mile high club is a great place to try ;-)

    • .

  • I'm looking for Mel to Europe flights Aug-Dec. Any deals?

  • I booked my flights in January to London return for $1500 return via expedia.br and I haven't had qantas contact me yet - and my booking is still on their system. looks like I'm fine huh?

  • Uhhh.. I'm confused here, when I get to the summary page, it shows total of R $ 6,279.63 for 3 person return to Sydney to London. But right below it it says "All prices are quoted in British Pound"

So is it 6K in Brazillian Real or Pounds? It is crazy insane if it is in Pounds…. I can buy a brand new car with 6K pounds..

    • +5

Yeah, but that car won't get you to London… ;-)

On a more serious note, I assume you're seeing the British Pounds reference because you're using the automated Google Chrome translation. If you're ever in doubt about such things, you can mouseover the dubious text and it reveals the original text. In this case, mousing over shows "Todos os preços foram cotados em Real brasileiro" so it's a poor translation.

If you mouse over the currency symbols (which shows the symbol for British pounds when translated), you will also reveal the original text of R$.

In short, the actual price will be charged in Brazilian Real - it's just a dodgy translation on the website.

      • Thanks, much appreciated.

  • anyone know how to change flight date i made a huge mistake and booked it too long

    • You'll need to ring Qantas or Expedia Brazil (Qantas might ask you to deal with Expedia). Many deep discount fares don't allow changes, but according to my reading of the fare rules this particular fare allows changes and refunds for a fee — so you might be in luck.

From the fare rules: "CHANGE PERMITTED - CHARGE AUD 150.00 FOR REISSUE OR HIGHEST FEE OF ALL CHANGED FARE COMPONENTS".

      • can i have a link please

Enter your flight destination and dates, select "Australian Dollar (AUD)" as 'Currency' and "Rio de Janeiro, Brazil" as the 'Sales City'. Click search, then click the fare which corresponds to your exact flights. On the 'Itinerary details' page, scroll down to 'How to buy this ticket' and click the hyperlink which says 'rules'.

        • guess i have to call expedia.com.br but i hope they give an English speaker other wise im screwed

        • any luck?

        • +1

As per the guys comment earlier about Qantas cancelling his flight, just call up Qantas and tell them that you booked the flight accidentally on the brazilian expedia and you didn't realise it avoided fuel surcharge etc. that australians should be paying and you feel dishonest. And hope that they tell you that you're not allowed and refund your booking =P

        • waiting for times to call them they are only open 7 am to 1:30 pm Brazil time im anticipating an embolism to erupt hopefully things get resolved other wise ill have to stick it out in the UK with no money for 6 weeks

        • went straight to hold and been on hold for 10 minutes!!!!!!!

        • I was 1 hour on hold, the ran out of credit!

i used skype because its 7 cents a minute which extremely useful for international calling as a follow up id like to report i can comfirm, date changes are permissible had problems at first but they fixed things so anyone who has my problem go right ahead.

        • did they speak english?

        • yes some of them can

        • Did you pay and additional fees?

  • +2

I got a PERTH return flight for approx 1035.00 give or take(probably give) 40 bux. If too many people jump on this deal then im certain Qantas will pull the plug AND terminate peoples flights.

    • +1

What makes you 'certain' of that? Have you researched the experiences of other people who have booked through expedia.com.br?

      • -2

it happened to me, and because I've chosen to share my experience on OzBargain, I've been given negative feedback….

        • Can you share the email you received from Qantas?

        • +3

I haven't negged you, but I think quite a few people are reluctant to believe you, since as far as I can see you're the first (and only) person to report a cancellation for a QF Expedia.com.br fare anywhere on the internet (no other reports on OzB, or on various travel forums or blogs which have been aware of such fares for weeks). You also haven't provided much in the way of detail.

It's very rare for airlines to cancel confirmed tickets (I should know, having flown in Business and First Class quite a few times for peanuts on mistake fares), and if there's a problem with your booking it generally won't be the airline contacting you directly in the first instance if you booked through a third-party such as Expedia. Who refunded your ticket, might I ask?

        • As I said in my first and original post, I received a phone call from Qantas. I can scan my 28 degree credit card statement to show the amount being debited and then recredited to my account.

        • Curious, what are the other travel forums?

        • I'm skeptical that Qantas would do this. The transactions on the statement could be a result of another event and doesn't prove that Qantas did anything to your booking. I know a number of people who have already travelled on some of the previous super-discounted fares without issue.

      • Yup. Thanks for asking

  • Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any dates in school holidays for cheap (ie on/after 6 Dec)

    • First flight needs to leave Australia between 2 Oct-30 Nov to take advantage of this fare.

Can anyone provide me with a good link for travel to Europe. Cheap but no backpacking?

    • Lazy

      • To be fair, I've done some solid research. Just wondering if anyone knew a Priceline/Hotwire equivalent for Europe. No idea why I'm getting negs for a legitimate question?

        • +2

Just wondering if anyone knew a Priceline/Hotwire equivalent for Europe.

Priceline/Hotwire. (They work in Europe). :)

  • This is such a great find. Just saw qantas' ad on TV advertising a Europe return is from $1800!

  • +1

Note: Prices are per person for round trip, are e-ticket prices and include include all taxes and fees for flight . Prices may not include baggage fees or other baggage fees or other fees charged directly by the company air.
These results cover a metro area with several airports . Review your choices carefully.

Is anyone worried about this clause from Brazil Expedia?

    • No, it's common for most online travel agencies to have such a catch-all clause, particularly ones which also sell tickets on low-cost carriers (which have all sorts of additional fees that full-service carriers don't normally charge). The only other fee you might pay for these flights is for excess baggage beyond the allowance Qantas gives you.

  • Hmm, kinda weird the cheapest routing from Brisbane to London is via sydney/melbourne then onto Dubai (both on Expedia and qantas). Wouldn't a direct flight from bris to dxb then to lhr be shorter and thus cheaper?

  • Just tried to book flights Sydney to London.

Got through to the payment page and got the following message:

    Sorry
There was a problem with your card.
    Check the card information.
If that does not work, try a different card.
    Try using a different card.
    No debit cards are accepted.

I'm definitely not using a debit card. Now I've just logged onto netbank and I can see a pending transaction from Expedia Brazil for $0.97.

ps spoke to Comm Bank and they said card should be working.. no issues on their end.
pps tried a comm bank cc and 28 degrees.. neither worked.

I'm on hold with Expedia Brazil now. Anyone had similar issues?

    • +1

I can see a pending transaction from Expedia Brazil for $0.97.

This is likely a test pre-authorisation to see if your credit card details are valid, and won't get charged; I've encountered this a few times before.

A few people have reported in this thread having their CC rejected, likely because it's been blocked by their CC's fraud protection for being an unusual transaction (a big amount on a foreign website which you've never used before).

      • +1

Just tried again after speaking to Comm bank and it went through!

Shame 28 degrees wouldn't work.. could have saved on some foreign currency charges..

        • Funny, mine worked. But I used mine all over the place, from USA to Fiji online and in person for items around A$1000. So they probably get to used to this pattern. If you used it only in Au or online purchases worth of $20 then this may just jump out as irregularity. Maybe let them know that you want to make purchase in Brasil and it would be ok.

        • I had the same problem. I kept resubmitting and they took out $1 each time, which i have been told will be refunded.
My confirmation never came through as it kept saying prob with credit card. The bank has told me there is no block on my card and that there have been 3 seperate totals of 117$ taken out from expedia???!!. Im trying to call brazil atm but ran out of credit…whats the best way to contact them that doesnt drain ur money?
Anyone else in the same situation?

        • Hi mate,

I've got 2 charges pending both for $0.97 on my comm bank credit card along with the transaction for the flights that I booked ($2k for two people).

Earlier I was trying to use my 28 degrees credit card but I kept getting a message saying that I can't use a debit card. I've just logged onto 28 degrees online banking and I see my available funds is short by about $350 odd. Not sure what it is because 28 degrees doesn't show pending transactions. Will have to wait and see. Must be something to do with Expedia as I haven't used that particular card anywhere else.

        • hey did you find out what the 350 was for?

        • No, the transaction/s are still pending. Will update once it settles.

        • im about 200 shorter then i should be which is still ok but not terribly happy about it

        • Hi. I had the same thing happen to me with my 28 degrees card. I tried to book but it said I can't use debit card.

Next morning, I had 2 pending transactions of $114 each from expedia brazil. I called 28 degrees and they said its a pre-authorised transaction and advised to try again.

It worked second time around. With expedia brazil deducting the balance of the total price. Hope that helps. :-)

  • Finally booked the tickets after atempting since midnight last night!! After calling the ANZ bank about 7 times and them assuring me there was no blocks on the card and it was all expedias fault, i decided to give it 1 more crack at calling the bank. So it ends up the knobs did have a block on the card and therefore i was not able to process my order. I had to change flight dates as the ones i originally booked/wanted had gone up in price, and the other dates had a long stayover in dubai.. so i lose out on 4 days. Furhtermore, expedia has taken out 7 x $117 from my account, which i hope to get back otherwise i will need to dispute it. I really need to change banks, these guys are idiots!

    • Ouch. Expensive being an ANZ customer…

last year, i booked qantas flights to japan using expedia.co.uk - and the price was about 30% cheaper than booking here in aust. tried going to flight centre to match, and also called qantas - neither would do the same price. so i ended up booking through the uk website - knowing that any changes would have to go through there.

in the end, no issues at all - paid with my cba credit card and incurred international currency conversion fees - BUT i did get travel insurance (the fees were lower than a separate insurance policy - so i didn't use my 28 deg card).

i did have issues paying online though - my card wouldn't work through the website (similar to what others here have described). ended up calling expedia uk, and they put the booking through over the phone. very easy (and i guess easier than using the brazilian expedia - unless you know how to speak portuguese!).

the booking appeared immediately on the qantas website - and was able to select seats etc through there.

i will always check foreign websites in the future - you get exactly the same flight, but possibly a cheaper fare. expedia are great in that they allow you to check flights starting from any location.

also try using websites like skyscanner to check your fare - and just change the country selection (it will search different websites depending on which country you select).

    Hey all,

Just booked 2 tickets to London.

    Total: R$4.761,48

Westpac Credit Cards - you most likely will get a decline - and get a payment of 117$ and 0.97c deducted each time you try it. ( called the bank they will dispute after 24 hours )

Use a debit credit card - i used a St.George one and worked fine.

Very good price!! Checked qantas website, lowest price there is $1800.

    Thanks !

    • I got a fee of .97 c plus the full amount that I paid for the tickets and no indication that anything has been rejected. Does it sound like I am in the clear?

      • Yep, that's right.

  • Have booked 2 tickets. 28degrees card didn't work (error message said 'No debit cards allowed' despite this being a credit card). Used a sub-optimal card in the end.

    • I had the same issue with 28 degrees.. so much for being a travel card.

  • Booking now visible on qantas website. :)

    • How do you check this?

      • Log on to Qantas FF and select 'my bookings' on the left panel.

        • And if we dont have a FF account?

        • Log in to expedia.br, log in, and click "Meus Itinerários" up top.

      • Your booking number is on your itinerary.
        CONFIRMADA
        Qantas Airways *****

  • booked just now flying earliest date (oct 3) coming back 4 weeks later, 2 poeple R2150 each or thereabouts. Confirmed flight on my Qantas frequent flier account and also have chosen my seat.

  • HELP!!!! I've misspelled my name… lets say Jon and not John!! Any advice, I think im screwed?

    • By October you will be able to change your name on the passport!
      I think you're screwed :)

    • Apparently there is some IATA (International Air Transport Association) ruling that says that a name can have up to 3 errors before the ticket is deemed invalid/you need to change the name on the ticket.
I read this somewhere on Australian Frequent Flyer… but I've lost the actual link sorry!

      Hope that helps!

      • ATA (International Air Transport Association) ruling that says that a name can have up to 3 errors before the ticket is deemed invalid

That would be handy to see.

Your are right I think (hope) there is a difference between a "change" and "correction" I just need to get expidia.com.br and qantas to play nice!

  • Anyone have any luck getting the cheap flights on 30 Nov?

    • What are your travel dates?

      • 30 Nov from Brisbane.

It was $3200R return each for 2 of us

Then when we went single seats it was $2533R each. My friend got it, but I had to go for $3194R. Above $1400 avg. so it was a good find overall.

        • Yeah, it looks like the outbound from BNE sold out in the sale booking fare. I've got $3100R-3200 turning up.

Since you're on different PNRs now make sure you call up QF and get a TCP done. (To complete party IIRC) That way you guys will be considered as travelling together so seating won't be split. (Although if you don't want too… just don't do it lol)

  • Any alternative sites that WILL accept debit cards?

Was looking forward to booking until I saw they don't accept them, what bullshit.

    • I got through with Visa Debit?

    • AFAIK, websites don't know the difference between debit and credit. There have also been reports of the 28 degrees mastercard being classified as a debit card here in the comments(due to being rejected by the systems). Did you give it a try yet?

      • Ended up going with decolar.com, no problems, all booked!

  • +1

    Huge suggestion to use decolar.com

They don't charge booking fees like Expedia and is the most used booking site in brazil.

I ended up saving $50pp using decolar over expedia hope this helps people.

Make sure your country is set as brazil before booking

    • Are they reputable? Not heard of them before, but there's some crazy cheap deals on there…

      • Sorry mate, i replied below..

    • Seems cheap. Return flights to Europe for a family of four, 2 adults/2 kids : $4277 (US)

      • Yeah amazingly cheap!

JUst called Qantas before to ensure everything was fine and they confirmed this.

Can't believe they charge $25 pp per sector for seat assignments now :(

        • +1

And mine were $1020 each with a stopover either side (keeping in mind stopovers increase airport tax)

          MEL-DXB

          DXB-LHR

          AMS-DXB

          DXB-MEL

A big thanks for to the rep for the initial deal

    • What did you use for the :

      CPF cardholder

  • Definitely reputable there are a few sources which suggest they have 20-25% market share of the online travel agency market in brazil. Of course you don't have the name of Expedia with you though.. The downside is they take about 6 hours to charge your card so you wouldn't know between when you booked and when it is charged whether it has gone through. Where Expedia authorise your card for about 1 dollar immediately.

I originally booked through decolar as my 28 degrees wouldn't work on Expedia and I ended up saving money.

Flights are now confirmed with QF :)

    • What did you use for the

      CPF cardholder

      ?

      • i wasn't too sure but just put my card number again.. it still worked without it

        • Sweet

Did it ask for a passport number?

        • Theres an option to put it in but it's not mandatory

        • Is there an option for QFF number?

        • Even if there isn't, you can add that at anytime through Qantas.
