MEL/BNE/SYD to Europe Return Flying QANTAS from $1055

1820

Hi everyone,

I've spent most of the afternoon booking 4 sets of these flights for my friends so I thought it was about time to post it up on OzBargain.

Travel dates are: Leave between Oct 2 til Nov 30, Return whenever (latest I booked was 2 Feb 14)
These are direct flights on Qantas or Qantas Code-share with Emirates and start from ~$1055 (to London) on expedia.com.br website and range up to $1300.

This is the $1055 one that I found:
Leaving 28/11/13 SYD - LHR
Return 31/12/13 LHR - SYD
2174 BRL ~ $1053.29 (on XE)

If you book a multitrip, you can fly into London and out of Dubai for $955AUD or you can just pick 2 random European cities to fly into and out of and it shouldn't cost more than $1400

Furthermore, you get Qantas points and status. A MEL - LON return will reap upwards of 22,000 points which is enough for a return trip between Melbourne and Sydney.

  • Anyone interested would be wise to book quickly, because there's a fair chance this will get pulled soon, just like the cheap QF fares on expedia.ie last year. :)

    • So we're all the fares booked through Expedia.ie honoured in the end?

      • +2

Mine were! I don't think I read about any tickets being cancelled on OzB or on other forums (such as Australian Frequent Flyer or Flyertalk).

It's generally pretty rare for airlines to cancel confirmed bookings (mistake fare or otherwise) — some airlines like Singapore Airlines are explicitly on the record as saying they will honour any confirmed ticket, no matter how big the mistake.

        • That's good to know. Looks a safe bet to go ahead and book some tickets then.

        • +2

Well, power71's comment below is a bit troubling — Qantas might have decided to play hardball this time. You'll be able to get a refund though if they decide to cancel (although it might mean dealing with Expedia's Brazilian call centre). :)

      • My flights booked through Expedia.ie were honoured. To be honest I can't see on what basis they'd cancel your booking, I understand they want these prices to be targeted for foreign markets but it's no different then if you walked off the street into a travel agent and dublin and got the same price.

        • How long between booking and flying?

    • pulled or sold out?

  • +6

Furthermore, you get Qantas points and status. A MEL - LON return will reap upwards of 22,000 points which is enough for a return trip between Melbourne and Sydney.

22,000 points you can redeem approx $150 of WISH gift cards… making the flight effectively $905 return.

    • Watch out though, some booking class does NOT earn points/SC. *Whoops, my bad - you do earn points, was thinking of crediting to AAdvantage.

      • Nope, you still have to watch out for travel classes if your'e on a non-QF numbered flight.

E.g. my BA LHR-MIA sector didn't get any QF points even though it was a Qantas website booking.

  • Superb find. Kudos for sharing

  • Booked one recently and had Qantas call to explain flight will be invalid as Australian taxes have not been paid

    • Did it take long for them to refund your money?

    • +1

These do factor in taxes, if that helps anyone:

      Viajante 1: AdultoR$2.131,90
      VooR$1.505,94
Impostos e Taxas da companhia aérea R$625,96
      Viajante 2: AdultoR$2.131,90
      VooR$1.505,94
Impostos e Taxas da companhia aérea R$625,96
      Expedia Taxa de reserva R$236,00

      • But isn't that Brazilian taxes rather than Aussie taxes that power71 was referring to?

        • Well, I don't see how.

They are airport taxes, and the plane doesn't go near Brazil…

      • +6

They do factor in taxes, however the fare also excludes taxes - namely the Fuel Surcharge @ $760 for QF flights from SYD-LHR + the Australian Passenger Movement Charge & the Australian Int'l Passenger Service Charge.

The airline has the right to refund and cancel your booking.

        • Fair enough mate, thanks for the info. +

        • Good info, and would explain why Qantas might cancel these tickets, since Qantas would probably have to pay those taxes out of their own pocket if they decided to honour these. Most mistake fares I've seen honoured have at least correct taxes factored in (like the expedia.ie fares last year, which were legitimate fares available to Ireland only).

        • I'm confused.

The OS people buying these fares still have to pay these fees and charges.

So isnt the airline is effectively offering a special price for purchases made from the Expedia dot br website. (As the fees and charges still need to be paid) ?

Or are you suggesting that passengers buying these tickets would need to pay these fees and charges at the airport (because they aren't included in the ticket?). Unlikely.

    • @power71
How long did it take from the time of your booking to when they called you? Were you out of pocket from any non-refundable hotel bookings?

      • About 2 weeks after booking through Expedia.. Buyer beware

    • Just curious - what site did you book it through and where to/from?

      • Expedia.com.Br

    • so if you are a brazilian citizen its ok then? just say you are dual passport.

    • How long did Qantas take to contact you (after the purchase of the tickets on Expedia)?

      • about 7-10 days. But definately within a fortnight. The refund to my credit card was on the same statement

  • awesome deal - very tempting to go again. hopefully this time with sunshine!

  • so frustrating that they go up so much after 01/12/13. I'm going on my international medicine placement around then, but our exam period doesn't officially end until 09/12.. gah!

    • +3

Mate why would u care about the cost then lol

        med STUDENT.

        • -1

As a student you are nothing more than a student, and can see why it might be a hassle with expensive tickets now before getting a job.
Not sure about your uni, but if ticket pricing are an issue in regards to positioning for a studies mandated/related placement then the uni should be able to help in some way, if not from the faculty directly then via student services.

  • Took up what I thought was a similar good deal on Expedia Brazil a fortnight ago, converting to $ 1450 for Sydney- London-Sydney. But, it actually worked out to $ 1581(still not too bad!).

The problem is the FX rates you google up are not those that your credit card provider converts at!

  • Would not accept my Mastercard…. ??? tried twice

    • +1

Might want to ring up your CC provider and check if they're not putting a block on your card. Unexpected large transactions overseas raises flags to certain banks.

      • hmmm - thanks. you would think if that were the case they'd automate a SMS to my mobile or e-mail to my registered email address notifying me of the block? :(

        • +1

You'd think… but this is the bank we're talking about. The only sense they make is taking our money.

        • +1

they actually dont, i had citibank block my card twice when i was in dubai without them informing me, i had to call them both times to ask for an explanation

        • Happened to me with Amex about a decade ago. That was not fun.

        • I had just booked flights on expedia.co.jp ($1250 OOL-AKL return for 5 people) when my banks fraud department rang about 12 minutes later (10:30 at night) asking if I had booked flights. pretty good fraud dept.

I explained the deal I had gotten and the woman said she would look into it for herself.

      • +1

glad it cancelled.. I just read that there is only 3hours of sunshine each day in london during November… think I'll plan and book a better time of year :)

        • I was looking at Berlin and then thought "bugger that, who wants to go somewhere with a top temperature of nine degrees?". Great price, but too cold for me.

Mind you, $1205 MEL-ATH is still an attractive price. Average temp ~ 19C in October.

        • +2

3 hours is a bit on the extreme exaggeration end, but it's true their days are quite short during winter. When I went in December it was generally 8:30am to 4pm.

        • +4

but it's true their days are quite short during winter.

Not true, their days are still 24 hours long. However there is not many daylight hours at that time of year.

        • Of course, minor technicality :P

        • I was in Edinburgh last December, sun rose at about 9 and set at about 3.30, and it just went on a low arc through the horizon. So it was a very short day. But the nights does really light up.

    • Just paid with my 28Degrees MasterCard with no problems.
Hope they will honor it, Book flight for my dad from Europe to Sydney for the same price though (R$ 2097)

      • my booking was refunded within 2 weeks of booking - good luck!

        • Well, they would have to explain to me why a non-Australian purchasing a ticket outside of Australia cannot get on a confirmed flight. The travel insurance company would be interested too why they would have to pay for the booked non-refundable accommodation if the flight would be cancelled without a reason.

        • re-booked it yet?

  • Thanks just booked myself return flights for $1060. I hope Qantas honour the flights. What happened with the last expedia deal?

  • +5

Booked tickets a month ago and went overseas two weeks ago via Expedia.br - absolutely no problems, flights were honoured and these will be too. There's no reason for Qantas to cancel these tickets.

    • +1

I've also read people saying the same thing on the Australian Frequent Flyer. I've also flown on a MEL - SIN $400 return deal and have had no problem.

    • Great!

    • +1

Well it happened to power71, so what's to say it won't happen to others.

So are places like flight centre meant to beat any quote or you fly free?

    • +3

and so have I… but theres always that slight chance of your booking being flagged by Qantas, which did happen to me once might I add.

By all means, try, but I just want to reiterate the fact that your booking is NEVER really 100% certain until you've have completed your entire itinerary, so don't be complacent.

They're losing the entire fuel surcharge + other misc. taxes (in upwards of $760) per ticket, these expenses need to be accounted for… If this is NOT a reason to cancel a booking, I have no idea what kind of business model they've adopted.

      • +4

Qantas cannot legally cancel this booking from what I've been told and my neighbour works for them and agrees with this.

Basically the fare cannot be sold in Australia, it is sold via Expedia Brazil so it's sold in Brazil even with us buying it from here, there's nothing they can argue about. If you were in Brazil, bought the tickets with an Australia CC and they cancelled, it would make no sense.

Korean Air last year had an issue with their bookings in a certain Asian currency which made first class A380 flights one way from Bangkok to Korea for $450 one way; they cancelled all bookings until they were told they must honour them and Korea Air did.

If they cancelled tickets, i'd be asking for a clear explanation and threatening to report them.

BTW my tickets were $388 for MEL-SIN-MEL, this was $450 cheaper than what Qantas.com.au were offering.

    • -2

you booked and travelled within 2 weeks. Qantas cancelled 2 weeks after I booked so I'm guessing you started your trip before their software identified your booking.. Congrats

  • Can confirm similar prices from Perth, flying Emirates through Qantas.

  • How do I change to English?

    • +1

If you browse with Google Chrome, it recognises the text as non-English and offers to translate it for you.

  • So when it says

All prices are quoted in British Pound

What does this mean is it wrong??

  • Guys I'm getting $2,046.37 AUD England to Melbourne
Any ideas? Is the deal over?

    • Not over.

  • Any deals on Asian countries?

    • Not as cheap as the last expedia.com.br sale to Singapore but I found MEL - SIN leaving before 04/12/13 and returning any time in December into January for $450 - $550 flying Qantas

  • when will qantas give us the reward points? i made a booking from sydney-bangkok return about a month ago via expedia brazil. i see no points in my account.

    cheers

    • You don't get the frequent flyer points until you've flown the sectors. Or are you referring to points earned from CC?

      • i was talking about the frequent flyer points. so i will get the points after i traveled right?

        • Yes, you only get them after you travel.

        • oh okie. thanks =)

  • I checked out flights in August from Brisbane to London and a lot cheaper than booking in Oz. a great find. How did you know about this one? Just check every Expedia site around the world?

  • Awww dammit. I need to be in London on the 20th Sept for a Wedding. Just missed out on this one :(

  • I still can't get mine to change language, tried google chrome on ipad ad ever gav me the option to change to English?

    • Only chrome on computer has the live translation feature

As an FYI for everyone who does not know, the Brazilian government made a law/ruling that airlines cannot charge taxes and fuel levies on plane fares when booked in Brazil.

This effects airlines such as Qantas. This law/ruling is usually managed by some smart cookie (ie. coder/XL file loader) determining if the purchaser is Brazilian and not charging them the taxes, otherwise it would apply.

What happens here is that we have noticed that whenever Qantas has a special deal such as the one now or the Asian one that finished on 4 April 2013 recently, they forget to flag these special flights as requiring taxes for non Brazilian flight buyers.

This means that a MEL-LHR-MEL flight that would normally have about AU$900 in taxes put against it, has $0. Having a sale at the same time just gives us icing on top of the cake.

Please note that going to the Expedia dot com dot BR website for non sale Qantas flights will just give you standard prices as these would have been flagged properly.

I myself will be flying MEL-SIN-MEL with some mates for the long weekend next week for AU$419 as a bit of a status run for myself (and some fun as well - double status points for me until 30 June).

    I hope this explanation helps.

    Regards
    Daniel

    • +6

      Daniel,

Sorry but this is incorrect, you have to be careful with the language here. These fares do include all the government mandated taxes of travelling between the two destinations you have selected.

What brazil has banned is the charging of fuel surcharges. This is NOT a tax. This surcharge goes directly on to the carriers bottom line. So smart airlines have to file a higher airfare in Brazil inclusive of all charges. Emirates historically has not charged fuel surcharges and just quotes the fare+government taxes.

You are legitimately buying an advertised fare inclusive of all required government taxes. If Qantas is silly enough to stay down this road of exorbitant fuel surcharges (which are an everyday cost of running an airline) that is their decision, but the Brazilian government won't allow it.

        • +1

You really don't know what you're talking about.

        • Are you saying if I book flight via FlightCentre or STA Travel they can cancel it too?
I can't see any valid reason why the flights would be cancelled, as there is no condition as to where I purchase the ticket as long as it is an official agent for Qantas. On which grounds? Where does it say that Australians must purchase in Australia?
I got my booking now visible in the booking section on the Qantas website, all as confirmed. Yes, they can cancel, as they can cancel the whole flight, but not on the grounds of the ticket being purchased in Brasil!

        • I can think of lots of reasons why your flight would be cancelled. eg. your plane loses a wing in an earlier flight, a volcano erupts in the middle of the runway, your pilot is Denzel Washington, etc.

    • A mate and I are flying SYD - SIN - SYD for this coming long weekend, Flight gets back into Syd on Monday at 6am, back at work for 9am. All for AUD 408 each plus accommodation. What a bargin. The only thing I'm disappointed about is that I could not get the Marina Bay Sands at a bargin price

  • Can anybody help with instructions for how to do multitrip on Expedia be? Thanks

    • Click the "multi city" button (Vários Destino).

It's the third button on the row that contains "return" and "one way" as the first two buttons.

Then type in your different cities and dates.

Booked MEL - SIN for September via Expedia.ie 3 weeks ago and all good so far - 3 x return flights at $1,900 AUD vs $2,400 from Qantas (just missed Qantas's sale). My booking has a Dublin phone prefix for my home phone no. which I can't change, despite explicitly entering +613 but that's OK, as it's a non-mandatory field in the booking (updates, changes get sent to my mobile).

  • +1

Just booked BNE-LON for 29/11/13 to 02/01/14 for 2 adults and 1 child (14 years) for a total of R$6542.10 which converts to approximately AUD$3161

Used 28 degrees mastercard, who just rang me to confirm purchase from Expedia Brazil website.

Hopefully it all goes through, that's an awesome price.

      • +4

Ok, you've gone from being informative, to just painful. It sounds like there have been plenty of people who have had luck and had similar fares honoured. Stop being a killjoy! Maybe there's only a small chance, but it's still a chance, and other than time, there's nothing to lose by trying.

        • -8

that's fine. like i said, buyer beware. All I'm really also saying is that when you book a flight to a destination, its other things that you run the risk of losing money on also, like hotel deposits, non refundable bookings etc etc. Hardly how my personal experience could be classified as being "painful", and would appreciate your thoughts being kept to yourself…

        • +3

"and would appreciate your thoughts being kept to yourself…"

          Sweet, delicious irony…

      • +1

        That is bullshit.

I flew to Bangkok last month for $540 return using Expedia Brazil. No problems whatsoever.

Your booking will appear in your frequent flyer logon about 2 mins after you pay Expedia.

Scare mongers saying it will be cancelled are full of shit.

    • why don't you check your booking with qantas after pay the fare from expedia? it's simple than wondering whether qantas will honour it or not. book, pay, call qantas, check comfirmation number.

      • According to my booking on Qantas site, all flights are confirmed.
