I flew ANA last year and recommend. The free domestic flights and option for daytime return flight are another bonus.

  When I booked I forgot about the free domestic flight! Wanted this for Tokyo to Osaka. Turns out you need to do this at point of booking.
  I guess will take the fast train, more expensive but at least it’s more convenient

  Really? I find that a negative. Why pay to stay an extra night in a hotel?
  
  For example, if you're considering flying out on a Sunday morning, why not fly out on Saturday night instead? So you check out of your hotel Saturday morning, and ask the hotel to store your bags until the evening. Spend the whole day doing holiday things, return to your hotel around 8pm, collect your luggage, arrive at airport about 9pm, in time for flight departure around midnight.
  
  It's not for people who can't sleep on planes, but if you can, I'd rather be sleeping on the plane than looking at cloud tops over the ocean. And you're not travelling to the airport at peak crowding time on public transport.
  
  Also remember that trains in Japan typically don't run between midnight and about 6am, so if you have a flight departing before 9am, your transport options to get to the airport on time are limited.

    True, it's a personal preference. I can't sleep on a plane no matter what time it is.
    
    I checked my Google timeline…left hotel at 5:45am and caught train to airport a few minutes later without any trouble.

      same - i do prefer the day time flight for this reason. also travelling with young children - if they dont sleep and im not sleeping, its a cranky start to the holiday

    Great call ..one of the reasons why I never took up this offer. Also, going to the airport is such a hassle vs. jumping on the bullet train.
