Free Assembly of a Selected Range of Bikes @ Kmart North Rocks, NSW - NOT AUSTRALIA WIDE

60

Kmart at North Rocks NSW has a selection of bikes at their normal Kmart prices, but they are throwing in free assembly for the selected bikes.

Assembly is normally $17.

The bikes with free assembly include:
* Girls Trixter 50cm BMX @ $89
* Boys Insane 50cm BMX @ $119
* Mens and ladies dual suspension mountain bikes ($119 from memory)
* At least 2 other 50cm bikes

NOTE: Not all their bikes have free assembly, only a selection at the front of the store. If I owned a mobile phone with a camera I would have taken a picture….

All of the bikes offered in this special seemed to be "Southern Star" branded.

Having previously assembled a couple of similar bikes, the professional assembly is handy - I always have trouble fitting the brakes right - so it's good to have them done properly….

I also ventured to Hornsby NSW store this week and they were NOT offering this special, so it seems it is specific to Kmart North Rocks….

PS: I guess I am showing my age but I was surprised to find the 50cm BMX bikes have front and rear handbrakes, but no back pedal brake. When I was a kid and even a teenager they only had back pedal brakes on my bikes - even a full size 60cm one… Not sure when that changed and not sure if handbrakes are any better - not sure why you can't have both??

    Yay free assembly by 16 yo high school kids with no experience with bikes, assembly or safety whatsoever!

    Seriously, having seen the "assembled" products, I'd much rather do it myself….

      Except Kmart actually has bikes assembled offsite not by their 16 year old employees. Last I checked they actually had proper people that assembled the bikes.

      • Heywes is right according to Kmart - the guy who builds the bike is actually an employee of the bike company, not Kmart. Even if he is 16, if he's built 50+ he should be able to do it right…

        • Yeah. We sent so many out to be built over christmas. Bikes are very popular presents. The builders would have a lot of experience by now lol!

        • but, but, you have to assemble your own bike to understand it, to come to know how it functions, what to do if it comes apart when your 100km from home after a ride etc.

  • If I'm not mistaken, back pedal brakes are more prone to burn out and have a catastrophic failure under heavy use. Not really a problem in bikes for small children as they don't really go really fast or brake really hard.

    And yes, setting up the brakes can be fiddly. :( (But satisfying when you get it right)

    • I could never get the break wire tense enough - it kept slipping.

      What is the secret??

      • You must loosen tension on the brake guide wire, then pull taut, then tighten the allen bolt. Make sure you hold the guide wire with a set of pliers, or get someone else to do this for you. Then, to increase tension, use the adjuster on the brake caliper or on the handle. This gives you the few extra millimeters you need to get it taut. Once you've done it, you'll be surprised at how much tension you can apply with this system.

  • I was surprised to find the 50cm BMX bikes have front and rear handbrakes

    When I raced BMX (almost 30 years ago now) we only had one hand brake, usually the back wheel and two fingers only. Like this:

    • They are still 2 fingers on most it appears…
