  • I have a Tomy Digital Monitor, but one with video streaming. It was here on OzB ages ago, going for $80ish dollars from one of those 1-day sale sites.

I find having the video feed really useful - at times, my baby would just be stirring but not actually awake - ie crying in her sleep. During these times I'd leave her alone otherwise entering the room would really wake her up. Even at other times when she is physically punching the air, I watch for a while to see if she is able to self settle - something all babies need to learn to do if you want peace of mind at night.

  • What kind of power plug would this have? I have replaced normal ones but worried this would be a big square box one. Any ideas as I'm considering buying?

    • +1

Most definitely the square box one with square edged connectors. The plug itself is a power adaptor, so wouldn't be able to replace the head - use a plug adaptor instead.

  • Might give it a miss from a safety point of view.

just get a UK->Aus adaptor, it'll work fine. Their power is the same (well slightly lower voltage, but the unit can handle it). The safety risk is no different then plugging something into a double adaptor.

As for audio baby monitors. Unless you live in a large mansion, they are kinda of useless, because when your bub cries, you will hear them, so will your neighbours. The video option might be handy as Schwinn mentions. But you soon distinguish between a "I'm awake" & "I'm just dreaming" squawks.

      • I use a baby monitor all the time even though my house is not that big. If you are watching TV or you are busy working, you might not notice the baby cry. I'm a protective parent kind, so I don't want to wait until my baby is distressed and cry loudly.

        • agreed - baby sleeps behind closed doors and my house is small but has a maze of corridors - leaving all of them open to hear baby cry is impractical as I wouldn't be able to get stuff done/watch tv etc. Monitors ftw.
