  • For the expectant parents seeing this, you don't need it :)

    • +1

depends on where the baby's room is…..if it's upstairs but you're out in the garden, it does come in handy.

    • +4

      I'll bite….. why don't they need it?

      • +1

        Assuming survivorship bias or ignorance

Drago's comment is probably the nuance I should've written up… But it was early.

Medical/temprament aside, it'll just make for a more anxious parent (/enable their anxiety), without any real benefit - if baby is awake and needs something, they'll let you know

        • +2

As a parent of 2, and having had monitors for both, it eases your mind as to what they want, and you are walking in there with some sort of an idea what they want. Are they cold because their blanket is off? Do they want their dummy? Have they done a 180 and facing the complete opposite direction?

Not only that but you want to make sure you are not going in there for any reason because then they get used to you going in for every little cry and it just encourages that. There has been times the kids have cried out temporarily but haven't needed anything.

My first kid was a heavy sleeper, wouldnt disturb when you went in the room and would roar the minute they were awake. We didnt have a monitor and definitely didnt need one.

Number two has some health problems and is a light sleeper easily disturbed. We initially didnt have a monitor but getting one significantly improved her sleeping. Wouldnt say you need one, especially as a newborn, but they have their place down the track for some.

      • Excellent points, thanks for adding the nuance I probably should have :)

    • Our first kid had a seizure that was picked up over the monitor. It's like insurance really.

Everybody ignore this comment. You absolutely will use it a lot.

      • -2

        Use ≠ need

        • +1

Yup and I used it a lot because I needed it. They are not mutually exclusive.

  • -2

Don't buy this please, its not needed.

If you think you need it then put it on a wireless SSID 100% isolated from everything else in the house as these things scream security risk if IoT

If you really want something get a EUFY cam and it can be configured for children crying as well. Kids grow up fast and once you don't require it at least the security camera can be repurposed.

I'd still isolate any IoT device from your main home network regardless

Also, quick Google search shows they've had issues in the past (as have EUFY and pretty much all camera providers)

Electronic toymaker VTech will pay $650,000 (£480,000) to settle charges that it failed to protect the privacy of children using its gadgets.

    • Wouldn't touch a Eufy after their security concerns that went unfixed for years.

Also saying they aren't needed is very naïve.

This unit doesn't require the Internet. It is using its own WiFi to the unit. People would need to be in close proximity to access or hack into it.

I am completely against baby monitors via the internet or any security camera inside the house.

    • Damn. I didn't think about putting it on another SSID. Thanks for the tip.

    • +1

Incorrect, this model uses 2.4GHz FHSS, not wifi…

  • +1

Agreed - not necessary at all - our baby is now 1 year old and I thought we would need all the technology to monitor him - but we quickly realised that we were never going to leave a newborn alone even with a camera, and even now he's always within sight of one of us.

    • +1

Just wait hey, once you move them out of your room, or you want to watch tv when they go to sleep…. Super useful. Especially if your kid every gets sick.

  • Rather than tell you how to parent, I would recommend the SM50 from Aliexpress over this. I had the Owl and sent it back. Very happy with the SM50.

Neither are connected to a wifi network

We just got the cheaper Tapo C210 and used it in baby monitor setting and its been amazing, dont bother paying so much for one

    • Does the Tapo C210 come with a monitor screen? That would cost a fair bit more.

      • Nah, doesnt come with another screen, but can use your phone or even an old unused phone as a dedicated monitor screen. Purchased the Tapo C210 when it was 2 units for $44 so was pretty amazing

        • +1

We have one too, but when we travelled or when they stay at parents places/friends places, the monitor is a life saver. I thought I was saving money, but then had to buy one anyway.

  • Anyone use an app to do a similar thing? I've tried a few but haven't found a decent one.

Use case: when wife gets home from school run, the 1 year old often falls alseep in the car. We leave here there but want a reliable way to hear her when she wakes up.

Have plenty of old iPhones laying around, thinking an iPhone could be left in the car with her and it could send a push notification when the baby wakes eg by crying or whatever.

Playing white noise would be a bonus.
