Toaster Oven $40 - 25 litre Capacity (and More Specials at Aldi from Saturday 4th May 2013)

40

I was looking at Amazon.de recently for toaster ovens. Amazon has a really good range to choose from but the delivery costs raise prices.

Then I stumbled across this one in the recent Aldi junk mail catalogue which seems to be one of the bigger capacity models. Good timing?

It doesn't look like there's any fan in this one, and I'm unsure how important a fan would be, but I've seen some models with one. I haven't looked around much locally but it seems like good value for what's on offer (if it's not junk).

Might pop in to check one out tomorrow.

The Specials theme this week seems to be cooking, gardening & baby stuff.

More specials starting Saturday 4th May

Maybe grab a bargain?

  • hmm I wonder if I should get one for my room.

    • Not a bad idea :)

    • Get one if you need to toast the mattress.

I bought the 9L model a few months back at $20. It's good for toasting two slices of bread with cheese.

Nice deal from back in February.

I stumbled across that one while searching today. Nice for smaller things. White model looks nice. Back then I wasn't thinking about toaster ovens though, so it didn't register in the brain. Must be weather-related :)

I went without toast for six months while waiting for an Aldi deal. :P

This one came with a removable tray handle. I got the black one to hide any mess.

  • I want one as fast as Subway's.

  • I bought one.
    Some brief thoughts.

    Set-up
Unpacking it from the box, I noticed it's lighter and cheaper than I expected. But then again I have never owned a toaster oven before. Door action leaves one with a basic impression of the device but again I have no reference point.

I let it heat for 15 minutes before cooking. Some smoke was seen coming out of the vents, which apparently is excess oil burning off from the manufacture of the device (Page 9 says "residual oil or material"). I washed & dried the trays as the instructions stated I should.

It has a glass door with Aldi's Lumina branding in the bottom-left (unlike the pic in the catalogue and online which shows no branding, which I prefer actually). The metal handle on the glass door stays cool when cooking and has plenty of air space between it and the door so it can be grabbed effortlessly without risk of finger-burn on glass. Timer seems to be mechanical; it makes a ticking sound (which isn't loud) and once you start that thing you just have to let it run its course; it will continue to tick down even if you've turned the power off. Apparently when it stops you hear an alarm; I still have to wait for about an hour to hear it since mine is still counting down since I rotated that thing all the way to the other side - 120 min :)

    Instructions
Page 11 of the instructions mentions fan assistance.
Weird, because I hear no fan at all (cooking some potatoes at 180 degrees now). Maybe it only kicks in with higher temperatures? Or maybe the instructions are wrong.

The (basic) instructions devote 3 pages to telling you how to cook some common foods in the oven. Instructions come with that coated paper which I dislike. They really should switch to uncoated; it feels better on the fingers. On page 12 the instructions suggest buying a toaster oven recipe book or searching the internet for recipes :)

    tray
Dark baking tray is coated with hard enamel or whatever the correct term is; it looks up to the job and doesn't use traditional cancerous non-stick materials.

Why don't you just look inside? The fan will either be inside there, or it won't be there. LOL

      You're kidding right?

it looks up to the job and doesn't use traditional cancerous non-stick materials.

You were doing fairly well with the review until you got to that part… then you kind of lost some credibility for impartiality and accuracy.

By the way, probably the most important part of these things is the coating inside on teh walls. A lot have non-stick which simply does not work… teh gunk bakes on and then if you use oven cleaner you strip off the coating as well as the grease.

      • The device is good; I like it.
Had some toasted sandwiches earlier too.
        Giving it a workout.

        Re: cancer

They say it's inconclusive about the cancer. I say there is correlation. Just like how people were saying cigarettes weren't healthy in the early days while 'doctors' told them otherwise :) You can choose to be pro-active or be a loser when you get cancer from all the modern materials we are ingesting.

Anyway….good to see none of that here. Interior is uncoated too. Good.

Not kidding about the coated paper; though it was a minor point of course :) Coated papers feel terrible to me. What's funny it should be cheaper to make the book uncoated. Lucky I didn't complain about the typos in the instructions too, or the poor typesetting :)

I reckon they could have omitted the little metal arm you get to assist sliding the tray out (just use mittens…) and given us a longer power cord instead though.

A couple of times I accidentally bumped the door hard on the bench when opening it (easy to do since the handle sticks out a bit). I'm getting more careful with the door now (and thinking of putting something soft where the handle hits the bench or simply wrapped around the handle, just in case). As for the fan, I don't see it or hear it, even at the highest temperature. Instructions must be wrong. More reason to hate them :)

The device is good though…it took longer than expected to cook my potatoes but I'm OK with it. Alarm sound is more of a 'ding', which is nice and short and won't scare you. Not too soft but definitely not too loud.

Controls are large enough for easy manipulation but more dial increments should be printed on the machine for more accurate settings.

Can you complain for the price? No, you really can't.
It's a good buy (as long as it lasts).
