Get a $2 Coin for $1 - thenile.com.au

490

OZBARGAINED in 20 minutes

This is probably the weirdest promo I've seen in a while. The Nile is offering a $2 coin for $1. Seems genuine enough.

From their Facebook page:
We are currently selling $2 coins for $1 on our eBay page! No really
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261215…

I've linked the Facebook URL as I can't seem to post the ebay url

Obviously thenile.com.au are getting financial lessons from Wayne Swan. By time they pay eBay and PayPal fees they are losing more than a buck

Using my 7 eBay account will net me $7 profit. You little ripper

Is it illegal to send tender through the postage system?

Interestingly you can enter a lot more than one in quantity….

This will be ozbargained by midnight for sure.

This definitely makes up for the scrapping of the baby bonus.

Is it illegal to send tender through the postage system?

If it was, our jails would be full of coin collectors…

      • I was under the impression that selling bank notes and coins wasn't exactly legal.

        • It doesn't really matter if something's illegal, it's more pertinent as to if it's enforced. Even if it is illegal, I doubt that the feds are gonna care about someone selling 100 $2 coins for $1.

        • They do sell Old Currency Notes for a higher price. See no reason why they cannot sell $2 coins.

    • +7

Why do you have 7 ebay accounts? O.o

      • +4

To make $7 in 7 minutes. Simple

    • +9

They spent around $100 to reach an audience of tens of thousands, and they are still on the front page of Ozbargain.

You might be great at analysing basic mathematics, but you aren't so good with your comprehension of marketing. Look, I am talking about a company right now for free. They won.

Definitely one of the most bizarre promotions I've come across, but a dollar is a dollar.

That was the weirdest dollar I've ever gotten..
Also, I'm not sure how it's a stimulus. The money all went to eBay/Paypal in fees, so, it didn't stimulate very much in terms of the multiplier effect…

  • Wow! 22 sold in the 9 minutes since I posted this.

  • wow thanks… hmmm can get myself two soft serves at hungrys

    • Orrr, 3 at Maccas :D

My guess is that they're trying to bump their eBay feedback rating up above 99%

    • +2

This seems to be the most plausible explanation. Thanks GreenGuava.

      • also could be a marketing stunt to get their store attention?

    • +1

Or maybe they hope you reinvest your money with them - after reading this: http://tinyurl.com/cug7uhf

      But then it got OzBargained…

      • +1

Cool read, cheers for that, apate

  • +12

Is the $2 coin Brand New or Used? I'm sure Officeworks have plenty of $2 coins to Price-Match $0.95

    • +4

Can I pay for it with my ING Card?

  • +1

Wonder what the purpose of this is? Buying feedback on ebay? Not only do they lose $1, but they also have to pay ebay fees, paypal fees and the postage fee.

    • +2

they only pay a fixed monthly fee to post unlimited items on eBay for high amount seller… They don't care about the paypal fees and the postage fee which is only about $0.75-$0.8, so they losing $1.75-$1.8 each transaction… But it's good for bump their eBay feedback rating and advertisement frame, which is still lower cost for them than those free shipped sample and $5 off min spend voucher

  • WHAT THE?!

  • +9

If I needed to launder alot of $2 coins from the comfort of my own home - this is probably how i would do it.

And there were guys on the news today attacking ticket vending machines with giant grinders.

  • +3

Subsidy for Big-W's soft cover photobook, was $1, now free.

  • Is it really safe to buy? I mean really why give people money?

  • getting rid of drug money…

  • +5

its obvious they are trying to buy positive feedback for their ebay site. Their feedback is down below 98.5%, so Im guessing they are assuming if they can spend a little money for a $1 per vote, they'll do it

"If you're happy with your order & service you received, we would love to get 5 star feedback from you :)"

    • Isn't anything above 90% feedback meant to be good?

      • Not when your competitors have higher feedback than you. Sometimes, feedback is the only point of differentiation that buyers have to decide between eBay sellers.

  • +2

It's purchases like these that I wish ebay had Amazon's "Buy with 1-Click"

  • Collector's edition coin?

  • 3 available / 98 sold

    Get in there.

  • And OZBargained

  • Transaction Blocked
    • Sorry, this item may no longer be available.

What is going on? Expired already?

    • +1

      Yeah

  • Expired. Only had 101.

  • +5

Haha this is the most profitable purchase I have made in my life.

  • +1

Well, now we can officially declare the guy who said "There's no such thing as a free lunch" as wrong…

  • Already sold out? Seems like they prepared 50X$2Coins…

    anyway, I got one. Thanks!

  • i got my $2… cheers… :-)

  • +5

It was posted on their facebook page 8 hours ago but didn't sell. As soon as it hits OzBargain…

    • +4

Their Facebook followers were to busy reading 50 shades of grey. Ozbargainers don't have time to read.

  • Maths is not my forte but I reckon they will need to sell more than 101 coins to get above 99% positive feedback and also assume everyone will even leave feedback.

    • +2

Actually, they need only about 60 to get to 99%

      • Ok thanks. As I said maths is not my strength but I do know a 100% return on investment tax free bargain when I see one.

Or is that 200%. I don't know. What I know can say for sure is that I doubled my money.

      • +1

Edit: My poor math. They need 1266 +ve votes to get them over 99%. TightBottom, you were right.

        • +1

          TightBottom, you were right.

For once in my life. If mrs tightbottom ever says that to me I will give her the $1

        • I'm sure I had something for this…

    • Yep! And well before midnight.

Or even worse … a New Zealand dollar.

  • wow missed it.

  • —-deleted—-

  • +14

I might leave them -ve feedback so they can go through this exercise again…

    • +3

And by then I reckon I can register 101 eBay accounts and develop an app to auto bid. Mwahahaha

    • haha, is that taking the ozbargain spirit too far? reverse bargain psychology

  • looks like they want to try fix feedback on that ebay account.. by offering $2 for $1 and hoping everyone leaves 5 star rating.

    • You just hit the nail on the head. Others were thinking it but not game enough to say it.

  • The craziest deal I ever seen! 100% profit!

  • Do you have to pay captial gains tax? After all, you invested $1 and sold it for $2

  • real cheap marketing

  • Lets see if more than 1.5 of the buyers are dissatisfied…

  • Thought I saw thebluenile buy one get one free.
il be dammed even the logos blue lol.

  • Got my $2 coin in the mail today, as well as a $5 gift code. I'll five star to that! :)
