Sony DSC RX-100 Aus Delivered Stock $503.80 - JR Duty Free

460

Hi OZBers,

I was searching for a deal on one of these for myself an came across this on a tip from another forum.

Went to a couple of shops this morning to get a price match and no one could come close!

EBay cheapest is about $550 from Hong Kong.

These are available from any JR Duty free around Australia!

Hope someone else gets the benefit too.

Cheers,

Matt

  • Was this their standard price or did you need to price match?

    • Standard price but you may be able to use this to price match others ??

Lol - he makes me laugh! Good reviewer!

  • tempting…

  • I picked up one of these yesterday from the Melbourne store, seems their deal is back on again, cheapest i could get anywhere else was over $700, and the stores were annoyed at that!

    • I collected this from Melbourne today.

I stopped at the camera store on Elizabeth st and the best they could do was $650 for cash!

  • i'm travelling O/S in a couple of weeks. what do I need to take into store to get the duty free price?

    • you just need the receipt and the camera with you when you go through custom's. then find the TRS. In sydney, the TRS is directly to the left after the security screening (unless they have moved again). other airports, you will need to check their website.

      • just make sure you get to the airport early! the queues are ridiculously long!

  • Was their standard price :)

  • Not a duty free price guys!!!

This is the full price with gst - you claim the gst back when you fly out saving another $50

    :)

    • can I get duty free in store? if so what do I need to bring in?

      • You have to leave the country…

        • I think he meant TRS in store?

  • Makes me wonder if they carry the Sony RX1..

  • Good point - bit out of my range and I just wanted a pocket camera when I don't feel like taking the DSLR.

  • Just went by the Melbourne store and picked up the second last one, that's the normal price not Duty Free

  • Great camera, i usually shoot with a Canon 5D3 + good L glass, but i have just taken a trip to Melbourne, i had 2 kids under 2 with me so most shots were one handed with no time to compose. Minimal post processing in jpg (not RAW)

    • Cool pics. Which mode did you use ?

      • +1

Different for each situation. It’s really worth learning a bit about how the different modes work as they are pretty much the same on all cameras and they are ALL needed, none is best for all situations.

Eg A = Aperture priority, so if its low light, you go to A mode and open the aperture right up. BUT if you are in low light and shooting fast moving kids you need to use T mode = Shutter speed priority and set it to maybe 200th second shutter speed so they are not just a blurry mess as they run around. It will be more grainy as the camera needs to use higher ISO to maintain the 200th sec shutter speed, but they will not be blurry.

It sounds complex, but if you read a bit about it, it will quickly all make sense. Once you understand it, you can pick up any camera and produce better photos than 95% of people. (not being a camera snob, its true)

        • The intersting thing is that I've got none or very little problems with my Pentax K-01 when it comes to selecting AvTvISO, but those scene modes in P&S cameras have always been confusing to me.
My camera is still in a GST free bag, and I'll play with it once I am behind the cusotms counter.

  • 77 Days until I fly out…17 Days until I can do TRS (Correct me if I am wrong). Fingers crossed the deal lasts that long!!

    • I thought the allowance is 30 days. Not 60 days. And I doubt the deal will last 2 months.

      • +1

it's now changed to 60 days as of… sometime in april this year

        • wow, that's great for us ozbargainers (and tourists of course)

  • Wasn't this deal posted a few weeks ago? I got this camera when I saw this deal on OB last time.

    • Maybe … I did a search and nothing came up?

    • Yes, I posted this deal a few weeks ago (although I think it sold out pretty quickly): http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/103074
Glad to see that it's back for those that missed it the last time it was on.

pardon me but why this one is so expensive. because sony brand?
cant change lens and pretty normal looks i think.

    • F1.8 lens and 1" sensor. This is the best compact in the market
      http://m.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-cybershot-dsc-rx100

      • Plus very good glass.

    • you're gonna have your eyes pop out when you see sony rx1 price

      • -4

i did.. crazy. but its new released item which i will never touch.
i take olympus omd 5 over rx1, half price, interchangeable lens.
plus im not fans of sony they are overpriced because carrying big sony brand

        • +2

When it comes to cameras Sony are actually one of the cheaper options as they are a smaller player compared to Canon and Nikon. Remember the RX1 is a full frame sensor - not an APS-C sensor in a small body. The fixed lens according to most reviews is one of the best ever. Together they apparently produce amazing pictures. Of course a fixed lens system and high cost are still going to deter many.

        • +1

Its nothing about the “Sony” brand, its about the sensor. Nothing this small and portable has this big a sensor.

Also sony is probably producing the best sensors on the market at the moment, e.g. Nikon is using Sony sensors for their D800 (check the reviews) Nobody else is producing sensors with this dynamic range.

Also its 20MP which gives you a lot of cropping ability.

My Canon 5D3 at $3500 with my 85mm F1.2L at $2500 WILL produce better images but it weighs a tonne and is not easy to get right.

  • Has anyone successfully used this price for price-matching purposes anywhere else?

  • Damnit, i just bought a camera.

    Great find though

  • Awesome deal! Been waiting for this. I walked into the Bourke street store just to check the price and was amazed that it was this price. checked ozbargain and, sure enough, it was posted. thanks op!

  • Would this be worth the price for just point-and-shoot comparing with other cheaper cameras? Or do I have to tinker with manual settings and post-shot editing/manipulation to get noticeably better pictures? Would I be better off getting one with a 20x or 30x zoom for just point-and-shoot?

I like taking photos during my trips domestic and overseas but just point-and shoot.

    • In tru ozb style… buy now think later.

    • +1

You should definitely see the difference.
Even if you are going to use only two modes : portarate and landscape (or whatever they are called in the camera), to have shallow and deep DOF.
As far as I can see the camera is is a bit pricy, but if you have money, I would strongly recommend it.
I read something on Interent saying that Canon may release a similar camera in the fall but it is just rumours.
And once a new model is released, you normally have to wait for a year or so, till you can see good deals on it, like Canon EOS M twin kit for $598 in DSE.

      • Thanks :-)

Perth JR Duty Free sold out (T.T)

This camera is absolutely amazing. I was once a professional photographer using a 1D and a 5D II. When I travelled I would always take my 5D II. However now that I have this camera, I pretty much won't leave home without it. The image quality is amazing, its super small, the depth of field is brilliant and it is great in low light. This camera did so well that they released a FULL FRAME version of it (~$2500). I would love to own one…

Basically I take better photos on this camera than most people would on a APS-C sensor camera (including the SLRs with kit lenses). You just need to know how to manipulate the settings and use the light to your advantage.

It is THE BEST compact camera on the market. And this price is ridiculous considering it was $798 when it came out. Fortunately I work in the industry and got mine at sony cost.

If you find one, buy it. JB Hifi has it for $688, and that is still a bargain.

    • May I ask how it performs with just the automatic settings compared to cheaper ones?

      Cheers.

      • +1

My undewrstanding is in AUTO mode the camera won't reveal its full potential.
But if you are going to use SCENE modes than you should see the difference.

        • +1

True that you can get better results by mastering the modes, but my mum leaves it in auto and gets good results

        • of course, mate. cause even in auto you still have the same sensor, optics and firmware ;-)

    • just out of interest (as I already have one), what was the sony cost ?
      thanks.

    • Sony RX1 is a Full Frame that is the Big brother of the RX100 and really is a kick arse camera. Its around the $2500 mark

  • I have owned this camera for 6months now but yet to find how to get the best picture besides Auto mode. I tried taking fireworks during NY's Eve using the fireworks mode but the photos looked bad. Does anyone have a dummy's guide?

  • A little nit pick but the SDHC card says $48 on the sticker but the discount has been applied to a price of $52.80.

Scanned wrong and now free ? ;) hehe

    • Well spotted … Not going back into town for $4 though ;)

  • +1

Big thanks to the poster. Just gone to grab one at JR Brisbane for $503.80, they even threw in a case for free.

  • Everyone, I love this camera. Going OS tomorrow so its just $458! Thanks OP!

  • I got one from JR DUTY FREE from Perth today, there are about 2 left

  • Thanks OP. I was holding off buying this camera for months now and this price finally pushed me over the edge.

Will see if it meets my expectations and I may just sell off my M4/3 bodies and lenses…

  • I have to add my thanks as well for this post! I've been searching for a replacement for my compact Canon S95 and I finally found it! I've researched this a lot so am with the choice.

Melbourne store has stock and the prices are correct: $503.80 standard price and $458 duty free. Unlike the Brisbane store experience of another poster I did not get offered a case freebie :( ah well.

Am a happy girl all the same :) Even more so since the sales lady explained that I could buy at the $458 price and leave it in the store until the 60 days before I fly out which is one month away. I could then decide if I wanted to open it and claim the tax at airport or keep it as duty free and sealed.

Not sure what stock they had left but I could see at least 4 boxes.

A note for anyone who can wait a few months though… I think that Sony may be releasing a newer/updated version of this by the end of year. Atleast that's what I gathered talking to the lady in store as to why Sony had offered them such a good deal.

    Happy bargain hunting!

  • I too must thank the original forum/ advice re purchasing this camera at JR Duty Free! I am going on an overseas trip soon and have been eyeing off this camera for months…checking prices etc…..waiting for that special discount……

Anyhow, when the original post was put up on 5 June 2013 I went to JR Duty Free. They did not have stock of it (awaiting another 10) - this in actual fact was a blessing for me as it fell outside the 60 day period from when I depart Oz. Anyhow, I asked the sales assistant whether I could pay for my camera now (to take advantage of the $503.95 price point), await for stock and re-invoice me when I picked it up in a few weeks time (which would take me within the 60 day mark) to claim the GST. The Sales Assistant proceeded to ask the Manager and it was OK with them! I made sure that I got it in writing so there wasn't any hick up!

Anyhow, they contacted me the next day and said that my camera had arrived and asked them to put it aside for until until I picked it up.

Note: I went into JB to buy an additional battery and noticed that they were still selling it for $777AUD. The sales assistant asked me how much I paid for it. I told them and they could not match it!!

So once again..thanks…you have saved me a few hundred bucks!!!

  • Is there anymore stock in Melbourne?

  • HI there
Based on the previous message they had 4…..call them to make sure!

Oh….re the extra battery…I brought mine from JB (where IKEA hub is)….the price I paid (with a adapter) was $49.00……on the Sony web site as well as Teds they are selling it for $69…not sure whether JB have their prices correct….

    • Thanks mate.

  • Bought. 6 left in Melbourne.

  • sadly the sale at JR finished last sunday oz price (non duty free) is now $558 - still cheap
