There are also some kids bikes under the 80 dollar range.

Probably only good for trips to the shops etc, and preferably for people who know something about bikes. Because Kmart sure doesn't (notice the front fork of the Kodiak bike.)

    What's special? standard everyday price!

    • Pretty sure the fixed speed road bike was at least 130 a while back.

  • Speaking of bicycles, does anyone know where to get a reasonably priced bike chain tool?

    • RIED BICYCLES (google ';em)

Chain tool off Ebay less than $3 delivered and they work well as they are all steel.

BSO is a term invented by cycling Snobs. :p

True, but I just got into cycling (commuting to work) after buying a 2nd hand BSO for 40 bucks at Vinnies. While the bikes looks alright, and almost brand new. It was soon apparent why the previous owner donated it to Vinnes. The gear cable was not tensioned properly, so you can only shift between the highest gears if at all. The brake was off center and thus its performance was crap (Actually the front wheel was off center, so the brakes need to be offset to compensate) The mud guard flips flops and grinds against the wheel. Two weekend later, I fixed everything, and it was actually a decent bike. But I think the BSO term still applies, because unless you got some mechanical aptitude, these DIY bikes can be dangerous.

      • So it's more a bike that hasn't been properly configured, but can still be fixed? Gear cable, brake etc — those can still be fixed.

        • I had to buy a new gear cable, as the previous one was cut short. But yes, it can be fixed. However, if you are someone that isn't mechanically minded and don't know about bikes, it can be dangerous. If you don't tension the brake cable properly, the stopping power might be reduced, or if you don't screw the cable in tight enough it might come loose during a ride. Same thing with the gear cables.

Personally, I don't know much about bikes, didn't even know if I know how to ride a bike before I got the one from Vinnies. But as an engineer, and with a bit of googling, I figured it out fairly fast, and I knew to check the brakes and make sure there were no loose nuts etc before the first ride. But some people might not, thats where the problem starts.

so BSO is to describe cheap chinese built bikes that have front brakes put on backward? (and/or forks the other way round?)

I don't understand? (the term "BSO")

      • It's not because it's Chinese built - most good bikes come from Taiwan these days. BSO is the term to bikes built to a budget (of around $100) and they have to take short cuts by using softer metals that won't last long before bending. And it doesn't matter because they just need to sell stock, not provide you years of use.

Disposable bikes, that's another term for it.

I just want to add, these bikes don't start falling apart when they're sitting idle in a garage. They start falling apart while being stressed (i.e. on the road). The frame's probably fine, it's the little things like pedals falling off and forks bending (true stories from local kmart/bigw bikes).

    • Maybe so, but there is no other way to describe these. Having received one as a gift (subtle, yeah!), I agree that they are probably fine for a trip to the shops - thats if your shops are close and there are no hills in the way. I can report that it wasn't long before the gift was 're-cycled' and we went and bought a real one.

  • BSO's look like bikes but are so poorly built that they are undeserving of being called a bike.
They tend to have really short life expectancy if ridden a lot and need constant adjusting.

Thanks but I still haven't paid off my car shaped object yet. :)

  • Its bike shaped by name, hmm not actual bike?

  • Front brake not working, is it because subwoofer installed instead? or vibrator taking too much power from the disc brake?

  • I'm looking for a 50cm boys bike for an upcoming B'Day's gift. Hoping someone can recommend one from the below link. Are these good deals?

any cheap aluminium frame deals? Prefer that kind, lighter,
    but don't want to
spend several times of this price

There is a golden rule for cycling:

      Light/Strong/Cheap

      Pick two.

  • Vote up for the description.

  • I see those ignoramuses at K-mart are still translating 26" wheels as 66cm.
The size is nominal, not an actual measurement, so you can't simply do that. The correct ISO size for 26" is 559mm rim.
    And 700C has a 622mm rim.

You know the fixie fad has passed when they are $99 at Kmart. Nothing trendy about that any more.

And why must K-mart sell such crap? Big-W used to sell some decent bikes, not sure if they still do.

    $79 for a death machine.
Please go to your local bike shop and avoid this ……thing.
