I'm hopeless at finding cheap RAM in Australia.
Can anyone please give me any advice for locating the least expensive
8GB Ram (4GBx2) for a Macbook Pro 5,5 Mid-2009 model.

According to evermac.com you need 1066 MHz DDR3 SODIMM.
Corsair make a supposedly Mac optimised 8 GB kit (2 x 4GB);

It's about $88 at umart for example.
1 x 4gb RAM at MSY is roughly between 35-50 depending on brand
or you can try staticice, its a site that helps you find the cheapest electronic stuff
