ACCC Launches Court Action against Scoopon

Thought ALOT of you might be interested in this considering the overwhelming negative feedback I've seen in the forums about these guys.

The ACCC alleges that Scoopon misled consumers regarding their ability to redeem vouchers, their refund rights, and the price of goods advertised in relation to some of its deals. The ACCC also alleges that Scoopon represented to businesses that there was no cost or risk involved in running a deal with Scoopon, when a fee was payable to Scoopon.

Further, it is alleged that Scoopon misled businesses by claiming that between 20 per cent and 30 per cent of vouchers would not be redeemed when there was no reasonable basis for this representation.

    Where is the Rep?

I would like to hear from him.

  • I saw this as well.I don't think we will hear this time from a rep (after all, what could they say to defend themselves ?)I think the worst response was the "we expect that between 20 & 30% would not redeem prior to expiration",therefore only allowing for the rest to perhaps redeem.ARE YOU KIDDING ?

I can't comment on how Scoopons deal with business but as a consumer, I have had no problems with my dealings with them. Generally purchase restaurant and car wash vouchers only and all redeemed with no issues.

I agree I have had lots of great experiences trying new restaurants with Scoopon/LivingSocial/Grabone/Groupon vouchers.

I'd say it's about time. Had more problems with them than LivingSocial/Groupon/OurDeal/Cudo combined.

lol dont get me started on the ozthongs living social fiasco of 2011!!!

    I think CUDO is worse.

While they can't guarantee 20-30% of coupons wouldn't be presented, I don't find this figure unbelievable depending on the deal. The bigger the deal though the less likely the business would be to get vouchers not presented though.

Its easy to not worry about $10 on lost coffee vouchers compared to say $1000 holiday vouchers for example.

well if the article is to be believed, scoopon are trying their hardest to make sure they meet that estimate:

"I emailed again as I knew the voucher would expire soon, this time they rang the company and apparently they were fully booked for the remaining time on my voucher which rendered it useless. Scoopon then closed the file and marked my voucher as used whilst sending me an email explaining the company was fully booked," Ms Alford said.

      • I've been saying this for a while now. What they should be doing is refunding customers who have made a genuine attempt at purchasing a deal and have, as standard a book before date.

Ie if the deal is for 6 months, then have a book before date of 4 months. This means that people who leave it to the last minute in the booking period should have a reasonable number of slots to get into the deal.

If on the other hand a customer has made genuine attempts at booking but have been told they are unable to as it is full, then the deal has been over subscribed and they should get a refund.

These two rules would stop a lot of the complaints and issues simply.

  • LOL… remember Melbourne Aviation?

Well the SCOOPON Rep. is still visiting other threads, and posting replies.

So, why will he not comment on this thread?

Surely he has some defense and/or comment on this matter?

    • To be fair, I think the standard line is not to comment on current legal proceedings. I would say that his/her have banned them from saying anything.

Sure, except Scoopon have already released a statement themselves. Perhaps they have requested that all their staff refrain from talking about the matter.

    • Sounds on the money. I know when I experienced an issue at a previous employer, staff were immediately and expressly forbidden to "comment about it on social media".

I think ScumOn are the worst of the lot - go ACCC.
