Remember your car is only 12 volts and has a fuse too, you can get midrange car chargers for $5-10 at Kmart/BigW

    • do they have one or two 2.1a usb ports?

  • i ordered this 4 port one for less than $18:

The difference is that both the Belkin and the Kensington USB chargers have 2.1A per port.

The cheap chargers like the one you linked to have 2A shared between all the ports. Ebay ones are not safe sometimes or the specs are not accurate. The newer iPads needs >2A to charge quickly.

I have the Kensington charger - paid full price for it 12 months ago and have no regrets, as I can charge both my iPad and iPhone/USB device at the same time quickly.

These are only a couple dollars but they work pretty well and have lasted years. I have bought heaps of these for my family and friends too.

    • This one seems a best deal for me.. couple of reasons.. it is a branded.. griffin brand.. has good reviews on Amazon.. provides 2.1A & 1A.. so possibility to charge all of my devices.. eg 2A- Galaxy Note 2, Ipad 2.. 1A- Galaxy S3..comes with built in smart fuse to protect sudden current surge… Ebay seller has good repo.. 450 devices sold.. most of all.. it's just 1.59$ delivered.. I am going for this.. Thanks for letting us know about it..

It could well be a "made in the same factory as Griffin on an extra shift" fake but it's not going to be real "branded" for $1.59 shipped.

        • well as long as it is made in Griffin manufacturing unit it works for me :).. it doesn't matter to me even if it's not real 'branded'

        • I noticed an original Griffin doesn't get hot, just warm, whereas my cheapass griffin-lookalike gets very warm, bordering on hot. There is definitely a difference in circuit quality in the ones I tried.

    • When I was looking into these, there were lots of reports of counterfeit Griffin changers on eBay, so you are probably just buying a knock-off at that price. Have seen it down to $10usd on Amazon at times.

    • As others were saying, pretty sure it's fake. Someone on an Alfa forum asked one of the sellers and they pretty much stated as such lol. That said, I have one anyway as it's small, so I can just keep it plugged in and be able to use my single cup holder. That's just with the charger, no cable :/

I did hear a report of one catching on fire though…

Dont know about you guys but i purchased one of the cheapies with 2A (iPad)slots off ebay about a year ago for around $4 and it works perfectly.
$27 is a bit excessive if you ask me, even if its at 40%

  • Thanks OP. Great link on USB chargers.

There is a fair bit of merit in paying for a 'Branded' one.

some CHINA cheapies might work fine… but most will inevitably fail quicker(blown fuse), or blow a fuse in your car(cheap to fix, but still annoying)

    • Haha, I'm always paranoid about cheap ones failing or giving too much voltage, and subsequently damaging my camera or its battery. I'm also aware of the huge number of fake chargers on eBay, so thanks for link OP! :)

Errr letting your xenophobia cloud the facts. Most of these electronics are manufactured in China. Many people in the 70's & 80's claimed that Japanese manufactured products were just 'Jap crap'. (I was one of them).

      Price doesn't = quality.

      • +1

It's not the price that makes it look more attractive. It's the brand and source. I always shop for best quality and lowest price. I never said this appealed because of the high price. That's just silly. This is OzBargain. :P

      • Actually, Price does = quality.

Since generally in most cases, price = people getting paid…. low pay = people doing a half assed job.

The reason why Japan is where it is now, in regards to pushing out high quality stuff is because in the mid 80's they raised their expectations of Quality Control to very high levels and people actually followed them…

Right now China is the old Japan, most of their cheap stuff goes through little to no quality control, therefore why China is in such a pinch, because they haven't gotten to the point of where Japan decided to go all QC on everything.

Think of this, a person getting paid less than $20 a month in China Factories, do you think they will pump out good products???

Where as if a company from overseas, who forces the "factory" that they use in China to follow their high quality standards, they pump out better items, however this usually comes with a cost involved, hence they they charge more. Station more people there to make sure that they ain't "winging" it.

Before you buy another Apple Product, remember people died for your phone!!! Read up on Foxconn Suicides!

        • "force high quality standards"… clearly you never dealt with the Chinese manufacturers before…

Also the problem with your theory is that often the only difference between the expensive and cheap products is the sticker with the brand name. Most of stuff is made at the same factory by the same people.

And when bagging Apple, don't forget that Foxconn makes parts for:
          Acer Inc. (Taiwan)[39]
          Amazon.com (United States)[7]
          Apple Inc. (United States)[40]
          Cisco (United States)[41]
          Dell (United States)[42]
          Google (United States)[43]
          Hewlett-Packard (United States)[44]
          Microsoft (United States)[45]
          Motorola Mobility (United States)[42]
          Nintendo (Japan)[46]
          Nokia (Finland)[40][47]
          Sony (Japan)[8]
          Toshiba (Japan) [48]
          Vizio (United States)[49]

  • I picked up a non-brand USB car charge exactly like this (2 ports, one 1amp, the other 2.1amps) from a $2 dollar store. Been working fantastic for the last year. No problems at all. They guy said he had one too cause it was such a great price and they've never had any issues with them. Was only $12
