Microsoft Phone Developer Account - $20 AUD Instead of $99 USD for 1 year

61

A bargain to a select group of people!

Usually, a Microsoft Phone Developer account is $99 USD, but it's temporarily reduced to $19 USD.. The prices are always localised, so you will be paying $20 AUD to gain access to this deal. Accounts are valid for 1 year and will require renewal to remain current.

What you get is the ability to
- Develop Windows Phone applications (which, admittedly, anyone can do)
- Unlock a Windows Phone for application testing
- Place applications on the Windows Phone marketplace, either for free, ad-sponsored, or paid for

In order to access any of the paid-for functionality, you will need to jump through quite a few hoops.

Also, this offer will auto-renew at the usual price unless you opt out.

Given the current state of their App Market, Microsoft would be better off keeping the price of Developer accounts permanently at $20.

I wonder why they don't just make it free

      • as they follow Apple (ios dev program charges 99$ ) usually, not Android…..lol

        • +1

          Android dev costs $25.

        • that means they r following android now…

Given the state of their market and the poor state of phone sales, they should be giving the developers $99 per app uploaded.

Frankly with sales in the single digit percentages it's not worth the opportunity cost to both in the first place.

    • What current state? 160,000 apps covering most of the apps and games that most people care about a little over 2 years after launch is very good. There is far less rubbish than on Android, and far less duplication of similar apps. There's a few gaps, and there is a (mostly irrelevant) gap in sheer number of apps, but the vast majority of users can get everything they need and want on Windows Phone.

  • You can get it for free if you're a student through Dreamspark or if you ask nicely - http://wp.msdeveloper.com.au/pages/marketplace.aspx

If Microsoft really want to be a player in the mobile space they should make this free or even pay devs to give a crap about their eco system.

    • It is free if you're a student.

I got it for free a couple of months ago here:

It was free for everyone, not just students. Probably still works.

It's not free because they don't want people with no motivation to release garbage. The token amount they charge it just to weed out the tyre kickers, so to speak. I guess the price drop is more to entice the hobbyist.. Students get it for free, and professionals / companies don't care if it's either..

  • Again, it is free for Australian Devs. Always has been.

    • What gives you this impression? I've been a registered developer for close to two years and I've always had to pay.

If you have a link to somewhere saying it's free for Australian developers please share.

        • That page only says:

"You can also request a token for a free 1 year Windows Phone Store subscription, saving you $100, plus request a loan device to test your apps on before unleashing to the world."

Second year would be payable given that wording.

        • Sure, second year in this deal is payable at full price too. So with this deal you pay $20 for something you can get for free. That's the point.
