  • You posted a deal that you can't currently buy and there is no ETA on when you can buy? This might never become available and if it does, it may be a different price…

  • ETA end of July. Its still a good price if you dont mind waiting.

    what's wrong with plasma?

    • +2

      Advantages[edit]
Picture quality Capable of producing deeper blacks allowing for superior contrast ratio[5][6][7]
Wider viewing angles than those of LCD; images do not suffer from degradation at high angles like LCDs[5][6]
Less visible motion blur, thanks in large part to very high refresh rates and a faster response time, contributing to superior performance when displaying content with significant amounts of rapid motion (Though newer LCD screens have similar refresh rates, that also introduces the soap opera effect).[5][6][8][9]

      Disadvantages[edit]
Earlier generation displays were more susceptible to screen burn-in and image retention, recent models have a pixel orbiter that moves the entire picture slower than is noticeable to the human eye, which reduces the effect of burn-in but does not prevent it.[10]
Due to the bistable nature of the colour and intensity generating method, some people will notice that plasma displays have a shimmering or flickering effect with a number of hues, intensities and dither patterns.
Earlier generation displays (circa 2006 and prior) had phosphors that lost luminosity over time, resulting in gradual decline of absolute image brightness (newer models may be less susceptible to this, having advertised lifespans exceeding 100 000 hours, far longer than older CRT technology)[4][7]
Screen-door effects are possible on screen sizes larger than 127 cm (50 in); the effect is more visible at shorter viewing distances.[11]

Other Use more electrical power, on average, than an LCD TV.[12]
Does not work as well at high altitudes above 2 km[13] due to pressure differential between the gases inside the screen and the air pressure at altitude. It may cause a buzzing noise. Manufacturers rate their screens to indicate the altitude parameters.[13]
For those who wish to listen to AM radio, or are amateur radio operators (hams) or shortwave listeners (SWL), the radio frequency interference (RFI) from these devices can be irritating or disabling.[14]

With current Plasmas most (if not all) if the old disadvantages have more or less disappeared. Their energy efficiency is on a par with other types and they no longer suffer from burn-in and other screen artefacts. They still have the advantage of slightly better contrast and truer colour rendering, plus they have better reproduction when it comes to fast motion (ie: sports).

In short, there's very little difference between any of the TV types now. Perhaps when consumer OLED hits the scene with a vengeance, but that's a little ways off…

The important thing is to look at the KWH usage on any set, as it can be good or bad regardless of type.

I have the non-3D version of this tv and the picture is really good and you wouldn't get better without spending an additional grand.
I expect to use the TV for maybe 4-5 years max, the purchase price + running costs of a plasma will not be more expensive than that of a similar sized LED LCD over that time, no way.

Have a 42" plasma and a 42" lcd. The lcd walks all over the plasma for picture quality even though it is 1 yr old and the lcd is about 5. Plasmas are also more prone to failure.
The market for plasma is dying… that is why there is not many around and they are cheap.

  • ^^^ Only if you have Bing Lee in your state

  • Equivalent Samsung model should be able to had for a similar price. I paid about $800 this time last year for Samsung PS51E550 - 3D 51" Plasma with Smart TV, built in Wi-Fi.

  • ^^ Yes the Samsung is $875.00, but im still not convinced by Plasma
