Jeez! Astounding price for local Aussie stock from a B&M store, just when I talked myself out of buying a camera for the time being…

Its been superseded by 70D. Means no longer a current model? But good price.

Superseded yet 70D is almost twice the price for a standard kit

Ah I didn't know they officially announced the 70D…
      As I said, Nikon man.
Still a great camera though no doubt

60d is still going to be on the Canon line-up. 70d isn't replacing it, but will be better

Hmm.. actually think a lot of people thought the 60D was a step back from the previous 50D… 70D should correct that trend… but yes, by Sept the 70D could well be over double this price if the AUD keeps going down..

    • I don't know anything about DSLR's but have been wanting to get one for a while. Can someone more in the know give their opinion on this camera? Is this a great price or is it pretty easy to get a camera of this calibre (any brand) for this price or cheaper. Are there any gotcha's I should be avoiding? What made the 60D a step back compared to the 50D?

      • This is an awesome price. Try to find cheaper anywhere else. For a first time SLR buyer you cant really go wrong here except maybe it's a bit too advanced.

You can always chuck it in auto mode and get the best pictures you have ever taken.

Have a read of some reviews online, it might have been been a step back from from a 50d (which I own) but for 98.3% of the population it makes bugger all difference. I believe the 60D (check) does video which the 50D was never able to do. That alone makes it a better consumer camera in my books.

        • Other reasons they were considered a step back incl. having a plastic composite body instead of magnisium alloy body, going to SD instead of CF (not a big deal), slower stills frames per sec and the change of controls at the back (no more joystick).

Having said that though, I do own one and it's great especially as an entry prosumer model. Yes it can do full HD video, has a flippy LCD screen for candid shots, mansized grip, is lighter for travel use and shares the same sensor as the canon 7D.

At this price with lens, buy it, use it, love it and upgrade it in a few years to full frame if your so inclined.

        • Shame the full frames don't come with a flippy LCD. Very useful for low shots.

The only downside I see is the kit lens is quite short focal length.. so basically not much zoom. However it depends what sort of photography you want to do.. I would allow more money for a decent flash and 1 or 2 other lenses to suit the subjects you want to shoot. i.e long zooms for animals and sports.. fast primes for low light… ultra wide angle for landscapes.. as far as price, this is only $9 more than DWI (a well known overseas importer from HK).. yet it comes with proper full Canon warranty…

  • I also have this camera and have had it for one and a half years and absolutely think it is great. If you can master this camera in terms of using its full capabilities you will definitely be a pro. For the price it is a very good buy however a longer zoom (with image stabilizer) would be required as well as a prime lens. It is always the extras that add up.

  • so like for a complete newbie this would be ok if i went out every weekend or so to play and learn with in terms of bargain value?

there was a free(?) camera training book on ozbargain a year ago, sort of wish i have it

    edit:

it wasn't free but hope there's a deal in the near future

    • Photography is fairly easy to learn. I taught myself, just by watching youtube videos and reading online articles.
A nicer camera like this one will cater for your advancement in skill nicely, allowing easier access to creative options.
