Comments

  • Some great sounding features, but I can't see it reaching the goal unless Canonical "donate" a big chunk.

It's definitely a compelling concept though.

    • If you'd like to have one of these in May, you need to support it now or there will be no market release at all.

  • I have been following the development of the Ubuntu mobile with some excitement. It is a beautiful UI, perhaps the best available. This is a huge task and I am tempted to plonk my money down… But it is a long time to fulfilment.

    • Ditto.. hanging out for a proper release!

      • There is no further market release. Buy it now so it hits its target if you are interested.

  • +2

a year is a long time in the world of mobile development

    • May 2014 delivery.
128gb storage might be common by then, maybe, but I doubt it.
Unscratchable sapphire crystal screen also? Hmm.
      Plus 4gb of Ram?

It's also been reduced in price to $695.

  • That phone doesn't look like a BETA phone or a development phone and they're asking that the early adopters/orders pay $830? I think that is pretty ludicrous for a phone that has no real mobile reputation yet. The software looks promising and all but it seems like it's a bit of a stretch.

Yes couple this with the points mentioned above that it is a considerable wait before you receive the phone. I simply feel that for a start-up campaign there should be more perks in pre-ordering the phone. I don't really know how high their RRP is going to be though (this is reaching Apple market prices!).

    • $695 is the price for the next 13 days. There will be no retail price.

They are looking for a proof of concept device to give their newly launched convergent desktop and mobile operating system the best start they can.

  • It's a freaking beautiful phone. However, the specs seem really, really huge and there doesn't seem to be any information on battery life. Without some ridiculous optimisation I can't see it lasting long.

That and Ubuntu's entering the mobile market pretty late… I can't see it surviving for too long unless they somehow get massive developer support

    • It runs android also so you have options when you receive it.

The screen is not massive though which should help battery life.

For me, the fact that it is also a desktop computer is a MAJOR bonus.
A true computer in your pocket.

  • Now at $695 flat fee.

Given the specs, this is a good deal.
It will launch in May and runs Android if you are not enamoured with the final Ubuntu software delivered.

If they don't hit their target nobody will get one and the money gets refunded.

If they do hit their target ONLY those who put money down in the next 13 days will get one. There is no further market release.
