Udemy deals, What's up with all the HATE? Here's hoping it can end.

Hey Everybody,

I am sick of people complaining about how UDEMY deals shouldn't be posted and hounding WNK and anyone else over posting these deals.

Get over the fact that you might not like ever deal that gets upvoted and obviously most people find the deals useful judging by the number of upvotes.

Can we please get over it once and for all. If you don't like the deal you can block it, block the domain so you don't see any of those deals any more. Furthermore if you don't like WNK's deals you can block his deals, can we please stop this bickering and bitching on every post of his.

Here's a detailed blog post from Scott on how to block the deals from a user or from a particular store.

BLOCKING STORES AND USERS

I don't like so many of the deals that are upvoted, but I don't go around spewing hate on the posters. I don't troll every Android / Ios post telling how one OS sucks or how the other is better.

Can we all please live and let live.

  • ?? never pay attention but i never in particular seeing people hate udemy.
why would they? the thing make me jealous is udemy only has iphone app :D

the thing make me jealous is udemy only has iphone app :D

That makes me jealous too, I contacted their support, they say Android app sometime mid next year.

There are plenty of people who hate these deals and troll them spewing vomit all over.

Zafayar , Jackbob and many others.

I don't like the udemy deals either, but I just ignore them. I think the kindle deals are worse. I think it bothers people that they get upvoted and end up on the front page. It's almost like vote baiting. Just because it's free, doesn't mean it's got any value at all.

    • Just because it's free, doesn't mean it's got any value at all.

Value is based on who uses it. If you are never going to sit in front of a computer and do a course it is zero value for you. As for me I have completed 5 courses so far and collected over a hundred, I have got plenty of value from these deals.

I don't have an Iphone so most Ios deals are zero value to me, but I don't go around trolling Ios deals spewing hate all over.

I come back to my original point, which you too agree with.

      but I just ignore them.

Why is it so difficult for some people to ignore deals that they don't like?

  • -3

Dealman, why can they not have their opinion? i dont see the problem. I like udemy although its annoying when something you dont like starts taking up the front page, and makes you have to chnge your settings.

    • +7

Dealman, why can they not have their opinion?

because a few haters who don't like these deals stop WNK and others from posting of deals even when they find out. Who likes to get abused over and over again when doing something voluntary, Everyone doesn't have a thick skin like JV :-)

I like udemy although its annoying when something you dont like starts taking up the front page,

Most people who upvote don't comment in support of the deals, so it seems as though the haters have the loudest voice when they could just block it and keep these deals away from the home page.

and makes you have to chnge your settings.

Changing the setting will take less time / effort and solve the problem forever rather than posting a lousy hateful comment.

    • I do have them blocked now but still see them in my rss feed.

You can use a service like Yahoo Pipes to customize your RSS feed. You can block whatever you want then.

What domain did they used to spam before they got their grubby paws involved here?

I posted the first Udemy deal which I saw on Dealnews. Udemy and their teachers have leveraged the power of bargain sites and are now posting it on Dealnews, OzBargain, Fatwallet, Slickdeals etc with a positive response.

      sockpuppeting positive clicks.

Our system is constantly auditing the votes. If you see anything suspicious then let us know. As most of the Udemy teachers are from overseas, its pretty easy to spot ;)

  • With an average of 31.6 positives, these are very popular deals with the ozbargain community…..

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/udemy.com

People who do not like them should either ignore them….. or vote with their feet….. membership of ozbargain is not compulsory.

keep the pressure on and have the posts moved to the forums where they belong.

Dude you seriously have some issues,

I understand that it shows up in your RSS feed, but is it so difficult to ignore a deal that you don't like in your RSS feed ? Do you have to comment on EACH and EVERY deal ?

Obviously everyone else love these deals as indicated by the number of positives.

LIVE AND LET LIVE. The community is for everyone to find bargains that they value, so please take your non value adding rants elsewhere, perhaps in the forums where they belong.

          don't feed em…. :-)

Actually its not the wnk deals that I personally object to , its when the presenters just joined up to give their 40-50% off deals that started the spam reactions. 40-50% of a price that they set so we have no idea what its worth really is.

WNK and our regulars know what maybe of interest and mostly the free ones and they combined many in one post vs the presenters who just pushed their own deals.

All that said I just have turned off seeing any Udemy deals.

      • They are deals as they normally cost money but a discount either 100% or partial is made. They won't be moved to the forums. Deals should be posted as deals and not in the forums.

  • +8

I'm here to answer any issue with my posted deals

    • You're a legend WNK. For all your effort in posts.

      • love your work here, WNK

I don't mind Udemy and signed up after seeing it here at some stage.
However after seeing how easy it is to search and find only Free courses, I don't see the need for the continous posting everytime something is Free or discounted cause it is going to be a never ending thing. I don't see them as a bargain however.
like Apps on the market or Play, there will always be new apps avialble for free, doesn't make them a bargain.
Regardless of my opinion I still have the power to just ignore them and move on.
I would prefer not to see them flooding the bargains page.

However after seeing how easy it is to search and find only Free courses, I don't see the need for the continous posting everytime

Not sure how long you have been on UDEMY or if you have explored it enough. Most of the courses posted here will not show up when you search and filter only free courses.

Since they are free only for a limited time , and even then only upon entering a special code, So like most other deals there is a time sensitivity and urgency about these deals. They won't show up if you just filter your searches by free on UDEMY. WNK and others go through a significant amount of effort / redditt / twitter / various subscriptions, etc to find and consolidate these deals and that's what makes them so highly rated.

Agree with everything else you say. There is a case to not have too many of these on the home page at one time and where possible to merge the threads especially if by a single OP.

      • That is correct, was unaware that there was a difference between whats being posted here and what is avialable. Probably a bunch of people in the same boat with that one.
The problem here is overload cause now my emails getting spammed and ozbargain is too… I wish I had the time to go through more of these courses.

Another thing I havent actually noticed that much hate come up, maybe like mentioned earlier it might be just the same 1 or 2 users that feel the need to beat them down. Its not that hard to ignore the posts if your not interested in them, however a troll will always find somewhere to troll… ignore them, responding is only adding fuel.

  • HI Neil,
What happened with that comment from doubleyoudottie ?

LOL ghost account, he sounded like a troll anyway , complaining about other people sock-puppetting. Good to see him gone,

Sad thing is all your useful comments are also gone.

    • Ha. Looks like another mod spotted it. It was a ghost account of a banned user. Yes sockpuppeting. The irony.

I've republished the non-ghost accounts comments.

It's only like 2 or 3 people who complain, just ignore them.
I thought the general consensus was people like them seeing the click throughs and '+'s. You're not gonna please everyone, it's more effort telling people to bugger off etc rather than just ignoring them and neg them away.

On another note I do hope a freebie Excel Course or something pops up.

    • It's only like 2 or 3 people who complain, just ignore them.

Haha > WNK are you listening ?

More like a personal attack on these fine folk.

This is turning into a name and shame dealman, your the kettle or the pot?

    • If you do a google site search , you probably will find a free course.,e.g.
      site:www.udemy.com Excel

Only reason I found Udemy was because of Ozbargain. It's a great way to utilise all the free time I have after leaving work. At least I don't feel AS guilty for bumming around since I'm learning stuff….slowly. xD

    • +3

It's a great way to utilise all the free time I have at work

  • I want us to keep them find them very good i doing one of them right now.

  • only thing that annoys me is that work wont upgrade their browser to access the site!

    • Forbid to gain new skillset so the employees can go find a better job elsewhere? :)

I think there are two issues with Udemy:

      1. People think that there are too many Udemy deals and clustered their deals page. In this case, like what dealman has suggested — block them in your settings.

      2. There are more and more overseas course providers posting spammy courses. Some courses are actually quite good but others are mediocre. This would be an issue for OzBargain to resolve. The situation is not too bad at the moment but I'll love to hear community's suggestions on this.

      • +1

Issue no. 2 would be difficult to solve as it is very subjective. What you might think as mediocre could be incredibly useful for someone else and vice versa. I don't think the situation is that bad at the moment.
Maybe when a Udemy deal is posted, a mod has to check over it (to make sure it is a decent deal) before it can be published onto the site. But again, that is quite subjective.

Or perhaps, if it gets out of control, there can be a separate tab for Udemy deals, and they are hidden everywhere else. Once they get 5-10 votes, they can go onto the deals page (not the front page) and then treated like any other deal; with more votes (20) it can be promoted to the front page.

      • Other than for interest purposes, I struggle to see the value in doing any free online course. What employer is going to recognise it? How are you going to prove you did it or are competent in it? If you're just interested in it, buy a book about it. That's why I don't see any value in these courses.

        Just my $0.50

        • +2

I agree that the value of the online courses are only for interests or hobbies. My interest and hobbies just happen to include things like investments, trading and varying IT technologies that can contribute to career advancement or personal wealth, but you wouldnt be putting these on your resume as part of your professional education.

No different to Youtube as far as content goes, just more organised and structured which makes it easier to keep track of what stage your up to or saving courses for future reference etc…

Actually just becomes another way for me to save tonnes of information that I never get around to looking at, like the gigabytes of ebooks and dummies guides to that Ive collected over the years.

        • Removed double post

        • +4

Everyone has a different optimised way to learn. Some prefer books, some audio, and some video.

Why does learning have to be about gaining employment. Why can't it be about growing skills for personal pleasure, learning to complement your existing knowledge or seeking other skills to help your own business grow.

Just because you like to live in a box, it does not mean everyone else should live in that same box.

If you struggle to see the value in doing a free online course, then try struggling to see the value of paying the $x it is originally listed for.

I'd rather have the opportunity to grab it and see if I can learn something from it.

But on the flip side, i hate that everything in the world seems to be handed out for free. Wouldn't it be better if you had to pay for everything ? I would however be more apprehensive about people posting stuff that is always free or always will be.

        • i wasnt after the courses for a new job, i just started this one. personal growth was what i was after, simply lamenting that i cant access it from work =[ i think everyones responding to the wrong post lol

  • If Mods can create a new space and placed All udemy deals & kindle deals under the title of free online courses and free apps with no voting system then you will see less and less deals from udemy and kindle in the future.

Simply, the people will not repeatedly posting the deals from udemy and kindle when they know they will not have any +.

If the people want udemy and kindle deals ,they will just go to that section (neat and tidy place)..

    • +2

      And then what next?

      An IOS and android section?

  • Anyone know how to disable the udemy announcement spam emails?

I already unchecked options in the udemy preferences but they still keep sending announcements..

    getting so much spam

    • Use gmail and filter them out,
Each course has a separate setting for unsubscribe.

  • +1

I like most of the courses that was posted, i even give the Excel course to another lady whom find it useful. Decent n troll people are everywhere, focus on the positive and run the race ahead. Keep up the good works.

Perhaps someone should update the posting rules to say "Udemy rep posts are banned" (from http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/112648)

    • The ban expired on the 10th. We are working on an outcome for rep posts on Udemy. Unfortunately, Udemy is promoting dodgy tactics for instructors to get their posts on bargain sites.

      • Sorry I just kept the domain permanently rep-banned for now. Unless we can work out a better solution otherwise we will be flooded with overseas instructors again.

      • Bargain Hunters
They are unfamiliar with your brand and love deals, discounts, and freebies. They would never pay full price for your courses. You find these potential students on discount forums. You will have the best luck offering your course to this group for FREE or at a severe discount (e.g. 65% off).

This is the basic issue with Udemy - they'll seek to game you with meaningless discounts in circumstances where there is no standard of comparison.

Perhaps i'm wrong, but i can't see OB having much choice going forward but to block.

Dealman blowing a gasket about this isn't really helping in my view - virtually putting it all down to 'hate' and so-called 'haters' is off-beam. His posts reveal the very conduct he is seeking to criticise.

These 'deals' per se have the potential to weaken OB by cluttering the effective space (regardless of the ability of individual users to restrict what they view). Keep in mind most users of this site don't log in…

        • Create an account and comment on this post on OZ Bargain saying you found a link for this course on Udemy for FREE or at a discount and post the coupon code link. Hopefully the author of the post will add your course to his listing. You can search for other Udemy posts and comment and also create an account to post your own.

So theyre basically encouraging sockpuppetting? Dodgy dodgy dodgy

        • Holy crap - i missed that on my scan…

I've been following these OB guys for while & they won't like that at all. Udemy have just managed to shoot themselves square in the face.

BTW i respect anyone who posts a deal on OB - it's not about my good mate WNK or others - it's about OB managing their site.

        • Udemy has it's problems,

I get that and I also get the fact that all they are trying to do is to promote the heck out and I can see why some people see it as Spam.

But again what's spam to some might be gold for others, I don't subscribe to every course posted here, I do to some that I'm interested in and I hope the "Neggers" if haters is too hard a word, don't stop these ones from being posted. Especially if many courses are posted in a single thread instead of each course in a seperate post.

Thanks JLove, That UDEMY post is certainly dodgy as.

    Negative Nancys Win..

If its a deal then it should be posted, Regardless the deal.
Hiked up cost then discounted is not a deal
Free then hiked up then made free again is not a deal
Cost product made 100% FREE IS A DEAL in my books

What mods should be doing is banning all the Negative Nancys who neg someones comment just because they dont like the person or comment they posted.

Banning UDEMY is a fail for the mods

    Just my 2c (inc GST)

    • Cost product made 100% FREE IS A DEAL in my books

      Agreed.

Banning UDEMY is a fail for the mods

FYI, Udemy are not banned. Only the deals posted by reps. It has nothing to do with the deals being good or not. It has to do with teachers falsely posting without declaring, voting up their deals, astroturfing with comments, and being encouraged to do so by the Udemy marketing staff.

As for your other issue, see here.

      • has the status changed ? just noticed one udemy post being banned?

can we just have udemy posts moved to forums instead of banned? I like to know what i missed….

        • Nothing has changed. Only rep deals are banned.
