  • It's great if you got a dumb tv around the house. Also good since it doesn't mirror your device to the tv but uses the "cloud" instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTKzs6ALL9I

  • awesome, shame you cant buy it in au unless u want to pay $100 off ebay

It's only just come out i think, I'm sure it will be available in AU soon..

      • My colleague started looking at these and he thinks it was a one off and won't be available any more as some people have bought them all up, and yes are flogging them on flea bay for $100.

        • Lol, it just got released in the USA so far less than 12 hours ago. Though it does suck that Amazon won't ship it here.

  • They are probably like the other Android sticks around just from a reputable company so that makes them ok in my book. I will prob buy one when they are available for AU. I got a gk802 now that I am not too happy with :(.

I think the difference is, instead of a dedicated stick running its own thing, Google Chromecast is a bit more like Apple's AirPlay where you can move content that is currently playing on your Android device & Chrome browser to it. It also provides API so maybe iOS will be supported too.

      • They demoed it working with an iphone.

        • It mentions Apple devices in the fine print (which im suprised I looked at :) )
"Subscriptions may be required to use with certain content providers. Chromecast is compatible with WiFi-enabled Android 2.3+ smartphones and tablets; iOS 6.0+ iPhones, iPads, and iPods; Chrome for Mac® and Chrome for Windows®; and Chromebook Pixel. Power cord required (not shown). "

  • It seems to be focused on streaming from the 'cloud' in that you can start a YouTube on your device and move the stream to the ChromeCast and turn off? your original device. So not sure how this will be workable for home streaming of local content. Also Google needs to authorise apps to use this device - so I don't see Apple getting native support soon - not that Apple would want to encourage it as they want you to get an AppleTV.

  • here's a summary of the Chromecast's features and competing devices:

for me, the lack of apps is a big issue — you can only get 2 at the moment,
Google Play Music, and Google Play Movies & TV.

you also can't easily stream video from your PC.
if you want to use an overseas PPV streaming media site (eg. Netflix, Hulu), you'll be out of luck as there are no IP spoofing apps for the Chromecast.

a product like the MK808B is around the same price as this, (including worldwide shipping) and available in quantity now. as I understand it, the only advantage the Chromecast has is the simple way of controlling it with the Remote App on your phone / tablet.

And Youtube for now. It did just come out and surely more apps would work in the future. You also can display your chrome browser from your computer, so anything you watch on your browser can be displayed on your tv.

Yes, you can play local video. At least some of it. A not-strictly-speaking legitimate copy of Black Mirror in MKV file format played magnificently on our television when we dropped it in a Chrome browser window.

    • You can fake it with your router.. problem is I don't think I would want the entire network thinking its in America when visiting websites.
