NETGEAR Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender $69 at DSE

20

Cheap for $69 as I remember use to be around $100 but I think now is around $75-80.

    Used to work for dickies.

Plenty of returns on these bad boys. Apparently they didn't work.

    • It's because the repeated signal can only be half the strength of the original, and that's ONLY if the repeater/extender is very efficient, which this one and most aren't; so the throughput loss is usually higher.

If a PC in a deadzone in your home has only got a signal strength of between 10-30%, a boost of less than half of that isn't going to make much difference.

I'd recommend EOP adapters (Ethernet Over Power) for the average user just looking to hook up that one distant computer at the back of the house to a more stable connection.

Something like the Netcomm NP204's. They're going for around $90 bucks (two adapters in one box). Much more reliable as long as you live in a relatively modern house with good internal wiring.

  • Here is a review, supposedly it works but don't know if it is true

    • To be fair, I don't know the true sample size. I just remember having to refund that particular product a lot. Maybe the customer's set up was shit - who knows.

If in fact it does cark it, you can return it for store credit.

Or if you're bold, pull out the Competition and Consumer Act on those bitches, and ask for cash moneys back.

The Netcomm one is pretty good, I set one up recently.

  • A lot of positive reviews from tech sites but the user comments tell a different story. So I'm guessing the performance of this repeater can widely vary depending on your setup, repeater location and router hardware.

MSY had the D-Link Dap 1320 extender on sale the other day for $35. Normally $55, works a treat

    • I bought a couple of these last week during the special. Very nice units. Easy & quick to setup. $69 is too much to pay…

Only use WiFi extenders as an absolute last resort. They are terribly unreliable.

Want to extend the range of your network? Options in order of reliability
    Option 1. CAT5e or CAT6 ethernet cable.
    Option 2. Powerline HomePlug adapters
    Option 3. Wireless Extenders.

On that note, I've had particular trouble with these Netgear units. They are extremely temperamental.

    • You also forgot wireless routers. Many wireless routers can function as a bridge or repeater (firmware allowing) and they often have better range than these plug-pack wireless extenders.

  • I think many people fail by putting it right on the edge of their Wifi network. They are repeaters so basically they are only going to work if you put it in a place with adequate signal to begin with.

    • The manual did mention that you have to put it half way of your max strength.

  • I've got one at home and really haven't found any issues with it.
