Experiences with Exetel?

Hi Everyone,

My friend asked me to do some ground work for her regarding a home broadband connection, after searching for a bit I came to the conclusion that this was the way to go:

http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_adsl2_new.php

Excetel: 15GB peak/Unmetered off peak on a 12 month contract.
Setup fee: $69.00
Monthly fee: $45.00

Has anyone here used Exetel before? I've leant towards this option as I'm not a fan of long contracts (or reccomending them), and this setup cost was quite low. They also include a free modem, which my friend will need as well… My friend is a bit of a night owl, so I don't think the peak/off peak times will be an issue.

Any thoughts?

    Looks good enough.

If you reccommend this, you will probably lose a friend.

I've been with them for the last couple of years with my home phone and broadband. Never had an issue in all that time.

  • No real issues with them, however they did over bill us and it took a fair amount of emails to sort it out. It could have been solved with a simple phone call however they only accept billing enquiries via email (their customer service is located in India/Sri Lanka).

    • It would've been nice if it could have happened over chat maybe? Then I guess both parties get a transcript.

  • Nice one… Thanks folks.

i was with them for ages and only changed because eventually i found a cheaper deal.

they are generally very good value and i didn't have any real issues with them.

EDIT: Didn't realise there was a poll. just voted :D

I've been with exetel before. Not bad.
Uhh but I suggest you look at the peak and offpeak times. They were starting to change when I switched to TPG.

    • Thanks, as per their website:
Peak Period for OP and OPF Plans : 9.00 am - 1.00 am.

Off Peak Period for OP and OPF Plans : 1.00 am - 9.00 am

Which should suit my friend, the Night Owl, quite well :)

      • it used to be a lot better :(
        Used to be 12hrs off-peak and 12hrs on-peak

But if you have a night owl — then it should work out pretty well :)

Yes my off peak is 4am to 4pm. Perfect for early riser who works from home :)

Been with Exetel for 9 years and been holding onto one of their older plans as none of their current offers give me the same value :)

    • I thought internet connection only gets cheaper over time?

      • I'm on a Bigpond contract I got last year that is more expensive this year.

Been with Exetel for about a year now. When I signed up they had $44.50 p/m for an unused land line and 75/150gb peak/offpeak. Does my needs nicely.
No problems at all with the connection - rock solid.

  • Been with them since they started and have found them fine, but would not recommend them for someone who had to ask for help in choosing a plan.

Exetel regularly change their plans, even mid-contract. You must keep an eye on them, or like the friend I recommended them to who just wanted an internet connection without constantly having to re-evaluate plan changes, you'll find yourself defaulted to more expensive plans you didn't want or monthly charges for not updating.

    • Cheers thanks for that… I don't see a huge issue here, but it's good to know, I can let her know to keep an eye on it if she goes down that path.

    • I've been with them 8 years and that's never happened. They change their plans yes, but if on contract then you stay on your old plan and pricing.
In fact, even when off contract I've only once, after a long time off contract, been advised that the plan I was on is no longer affordable for them and been offered a new plan option.
We are with them for our mobiles as well. And have always had prompt customer service

  • Exetel is 75% owned by Club Telco.
Club Telco have no contract, no set up if you have a landline, $50 annual, and $40pm unlimited ADSL
    http://www.clubtelco.com/broadband_compare_plans.html

They will sell you a router + delivery, best getting one from local DSE store.

They also offer referal/spotters fee of $25 for each. Let me know if you're friend needs a referal should they choose Club Telco.

Plenty of happy OzBargainers on Club Telco including me.
Seems they're not doing $25 pm local plan any more, but you could ring to ask.
Luckily for me, that's still my plan.

    • Problem there is my friend doesn't have a land line service currently, so I figured it would be better to just combine them for $45, and take care of all of her neeeds…

    • Exetel is 75% owned by Club Telco.

I don't think that's correct. Eftel owns Club Telco not Exetel

yep, Extel has nothing to do with the Eftel consortium. Club Telco, Eftel, Aanet are all the same group, same poor customer support as its all the same people doing the work. Horrific bunch really.

Exetel are reasonable, budget company but otherwise considerably better than the Club Telco/Eftel/Aanet consortium. What I like about them is they don't oversell themselves.. basic service, which is what most people need.

Exetel is good.. Got nbn plan since last year 300gb 70aud monthly. But now price has increased. Lucky me still has old pricing under contract. They are good for sure.

  • I was with them for a decade and they are pretty good now. In the end I was on one of their Optus supplied phone and Internet packages for adsl2+ and Optus were not able to resolve a noisy line that was affecting calls and internet speeds so I moved to Telstra cable and phone. The phone issues continued but were eventually resolved by Telstra compared with Optus who insisted that the line was within their spec. I would have stayed with Exetel if Optus had resolved the line issue, so you pay for what you get.

  • 9 yrs they been great NO down time ———— 200gb= $67 I'm in regional 2 zone

  • In my opinion, they suffer from congestion issues at certain times of the day. I was with them until recently and changed to Internode (more expensive) and now no congestion issues at all. You get what you pay for. For a further look at the performance of Exetel go to the Whirlpool forum dedicated to Exetel and see what many others are saying. Please bear in mind that what you are seeing there are the problems. I am sure that many other customers are quite happy. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/105 Note that they do try to push you into new contracts. They seem not to like those who are not in a contract.

    • I find that people who end up using small companies usually do so because they have gone to lengths to find the best deal, they're simply trying to eliminate potential loss.

occassional disconnect on the mobile broadband service. Also quite petty would bill even for 10 cents.

  • +1

I've used Exetel for over 2 years now. So far I've never had any major issues. The phone line is not the best but then I don't use homephone at all. The customer service and billing are all online, so if you prefer to speak to someone over the phone, then you may not like it.

Just be aware, if you disconnect before the end of the 1 year contract, there is $100 penalty, and you can't actually transfer the service across to another location/home when you move even if you want to continue with them. There is also 30 days notice period required if you want to cancel your service.

I do recommend Exetel. Good luck :)

Been with them for at least 9 years and happy to recommend them as well.

Have a number of people sharing their experience that they've been abused over the phone, service disconnected and contract terminated when there was a dispute of some kind. All good when it works, but beware if something doesn’t. They don’t have problem getting rid of the clients they don’t like.

    • +1

Yeah, I forgot about that. They are unhappy with criticism and if you are a customer and they can identify you then they will cancel your connection. You can see it occasionally on Whirlpool forums that I mentioned earlier.

  • I was with Exetel during 2004-5 and left them because of moving to another city. At that time I considered their service to be best value for money.

  • I've been with Exetel on and off for many years
My connection is a lot more stable these days compared to a few years ago - their customer service / ease of website use is still as dodgy as ever but luckily I rarely have to contact support

  • I was with exetel for more than a year and recently switched to TPG. Exetel customer support n web portal is much better than TPG. Only reason to leave exetel is internet speed issue in evening my area.

  • Thanks for all of the replies… I had been looking on Whirlpool, but as someone pointed out there, it was only the people that had complaints that you heard from there (that's a terribly constructed sentence right there).

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm fairly comfortable suggesting them to my friend given what I've read.

  • No, hell no, poor customer service.

I'm in region 2 and get Dodo unlimited for $69.90 a month, yes I am saying Dodo support is far better than Exetel.

    https://connectto.dodo.com/wizard/?product=broadbandunbundle…
$39.90 Metro unlimited your friend won't regret it.

    • You're typing this from an Acer laptop aren't you?

  • I was with them for years, no worries, and then one day they sent me an email announcing a gobsmacking unbelievable price increase on my plan- 40 or fifty percent it was- checking old emails- here it is 46%, yes you read that right, 46 freaking percent increase in one whack- UNBELIEVABLE- BYE BYE, EXETEL.

I'm with Veetel now and the only complaint I have is that they send me a paper bill- why would an ISP send paper bills?
