Sygic is having a 30% off sale for their Android off-line gps software… so the Oz+NZ map is only USD$29.99 from USD$41.99. Add the extra coupon code, brings it down to USD$22.49…

Or go with a world map for USD$65.99! This comes with lifetime license… apparently can be used for 5 devices with the same Google account (per XDA-developers).

http://www.sygic.com/en for more information on Sygic. Apparently the highest rated, best selling offline GPS software on Google Play.

Have fun!

  • thanks for saving extra couple $$$.

  • a world map for USD$65.99? any link?

    • Ops posted the link above………..same link

the world map doesnt include AU+NZ maps

    • Also beware there are a number of countries they dont have maps at all for.

Eg: Bosnia. Montenegro. Generally, semi-eastern europe. Also Japan.

Also read my useful post further down the page.

Beware that sygic maps are far from being the complete "world". Depending on where you may travel to, you are probably going to need CoPilot. CoPilot has many many countries that Sygic does not. Sygic do not seem to be getting off their backsides and remedying this - do not ever expect them to get maps for the missing countries.

Couple main gripes to note before buying either program:

    Sygic:
    1) Maps not complete. Considering Copilot is much cheaper than Sygic there's no excuse for this.
    2) Navigation interface likes to show multiple routes which makes the screen painful to read, unfortunately you can't stop this behaviour.
    3) Needs 12 GPS satellites before it'll actually show your position (seems excessive, can take 5min to find this many satellites in some fully outdoor places. It won't estimate your position - it needs all 12 satellites).
    4) Can soft-freeze (on a stock, recently wiped S3) if your screen locks or you switch to your android desktop or another program: it looks like it's running, but it isn't updating your position.

    Copilot:
    1) There is a bug in the navigation software (I think general map browsing is ok) that makes your phone overheat as if it's running furmark. It gets so ridiculously hot that I wonder about longterm hardware failure (wish I was joking). This occurs on ALL phones with ALL roms. It will happen to you.
    2) Obviously the above is draining the battery very quickly. You're not going to get long trips using CoPilot unless it's plugged into a power source.
    3) The user interface insists on rotating (rather than leaving North as up) and also recentering on your GPS location. No way to stop this behaviour. Personally I find that very disorienting.

    Both:
    1) Navigation routes calculated are regularly crap.

    FYI about the pricing:
Sygic "world maps" price is always 62.99 to 64.99 euros. It is NEVER sold at 89.99. The "30%" discount does not exist. The real discount here is 25% which is achieved using the coupon code above. Also, I'm fairly sure the world maps used to include Australia, it seems now that they don't. There was no price reduction to using the maps.

By comparison, CoPilot has better maps and is cheaper. Unfortunately CoPilot has one deal-breaking bug (read above).

    • Co-Pilot is $35 on Play store. $31 for Sygic without the coupon or $23 with. (Aus/NZ maps comparison)

      Is it it cheaper?

      • Sorry, you are right. I was comparing Sygic [not so] World to CoPilot Europe.

Would fix my post but now too late thus ozbargain wont let me edit it.

  • Nice! that's a great price: pricings on par with metroview! if you were in the market for a GPS app..getting sygic is a no brainer.

Would like to know more about (offline) alternative programs if you or anybody else can share.

      • +1 yes please Data's expensive but Telstra play credit cards are nice and cheap!

      • Doing this from my mobile, sorry for not being more detailed, hopefully someone else can chime in.

For offline, there's a couple that you should be comparing, There's Sygic, which uses TomTom maps and according to reviews is the one you should go for and is the one most people usually recommend. For example it connects fast to GPS, has 3D landmarks, lane guidance etc etc although its not the only app to have these features- It has a great interface, I personally haven't used it though.

There's also the native TomTom app, was released recently so is still in its early stages- missing some functionality- updates will fix this though. No major issues but is the most expensive. Haven't personally used it though.

There's also Co-Pilot. Which justtoreply mentioned. I've personally used this one and didn't experience any problems with it; navigated to destinations fine. My only complaint with it is if you set a destination and later don't follow the route since you know a better/quicker way- the app will be so stubborn and try to re-calculate you back on the original route instead of recalcuating a separate route- its a lil bit annoying.

Metroview is an Australian developed app that's well known for developer support on forums like whirlpool and also for being great value. I've used it, works great, no real complaints except the user interface could do with a touch up.

At the price sygic is being offered right now: id personally choose that just because it represents the best value at the moment. It really comes down to personal preference since they all pretty much do the same thing.

        • Hmm metroviews interesting aside from being kinda boring looking it's priced under 20$ making it possible to use telstra credit for some nice discounts.
so you can get it for AUD9.90 and have 10.10 in telstra credits leftover for other apps if you buy the standard telstra 30$ prepaid for 15$.

        • lol $10? that's cheap, paid around $40 when it first came out. if you can get over its sortof dated/cheesy looks and want a good quality app that will get you from place to place that also happens to be Aussie made; you won't find anything better for the price-

they constantly push out map updates as well as take user submitted data like if a roads missing or a new road is built you can alert them to it and they'll follow it up and add it to the next update.

        • nice to know for $10 it's worth a try plus it's nice to support some more aussie devs!
Also love my aussie pocketcasts and pocketweather devs.

        • I'd say that Sygic is slow to locate GPS and has a poor interface. I'd agree about CoPilot back-tracking to the original route sometimes.

Sygic is good. Better license than Navigon. I bought a Navigon license for my Samsung Galaxy s3. My phone died and was replaced by Samsung and Navigon told me that I had to buy a new license for my new phone.

  • hey guys,
I understand this is an entire AU / NZ map, but what's wrong with Google maps + Google Navigation

I just download a 80 Sq kms Area around Melbourne - Map to my google maps offline cache and for most of the year I am right here anyway so is that not enough ? Why do you need other navigation programmes that cause the issues mentioned above ?

    Am I missing something?

    • May I know where to download offline map?

    • +1

Try using navigation without an active internet connection and let me know how you go…

      • +1

also as far as I know offline maps isn't anything better then a digital paper map
you can't use street search and can't switch between Eagle view and paper map views if you accidentally left it on eagle view when online.

        • Ok, thanks for the clarification, interesting.

So can this app with it's offline map, work even with the mobile data setting turned off ?

        • +1

          yes :)

        • google maps app (not sure if current version) can download 80kms of paper veiw map but you can't search it only use it as a normal map. if your not gonna stop anywhere on the way and don't mind it won't read out when to turn you can get it to draw a line on the map before you leave home (with internet access) and use that as a guide.

If I had a phone plane with lots of data I'd go for Wayz Gps maps
I don't know how built up they are in Australia yet but it's a community mapping app where your phone constantly sends data back to them and say some people near you were using the app as well on the road you could tell where traffic jams are. also neat is the reporting feature where on some phones you can wave your hand over the phone and say things like speed camera, Cops, accident and other things people would want to know about and it would add it to the map of other people using the map near you.

  • Does anyone know if Locus Map is good or not? They also have a free version

  • Can't get the demo version to work on my Xperia Play - screen just stays blank and then quits out to desktop.

  • is the australia map just for one device? or can use for other device with the same google account? how is this compared to metroview?
